2008 Draft loaded with Lottery Point Guards

If we get a 2008 pick back form Indiana, then we may be targeting a franchise point guard. There are no franchise point guards in the 2007 draft. There are at least four point guards in the 2008 draft: Derrick Rose, OJ Mayo, Jerry Bayless, and Jarvaris Crittenton. All of the above players are at least 6'4 which meets billy's requirement for length and athleticism in a point.

Just maybe the hawks fill that there is no value in the 2007 draft. If the pick is in the teens are twenties, then we risk getting a player that would not start. 2007 seems to be a big man's draft and we are set at our big men positions.

If we suck enough to get a top 10 player in 2008 I will shoot myself.

This is the mentality we have to change with Hawks fans. We shouldn't be excited because there are guards available in 2008. We are done rebuilding. What in the *uck are we going to do with a HS/College freshman point guard rookie when we are supposed to be EC contenders by then. We are set at point guard. We have 4 point guards all in their 20's. In fact we are set at every position now. All I want to see added to this team are role player specialist...namely

Another scorer (ala Jerry Stackhouse type)

A defensive specialist (ala Bonzi Wells type)

I don't want any more damn rookies, or developmental players. This is our team

Speedy/Lue

JoJo/Salim

Smoove/Childress

Marvin/Shelden

Zaza/Lo

Extended bench: Este, Solomon

NBDL Rep: Ivey

That's it. We are done..that's the lineup. With the exception of some fine tuning BK's vision is complete.

I agree with JB in that we hopefully won't be looking at the lottery for improvement in 2008, even if it is a pick from Indy. Mayo may be great but the Hawks window for top 5 picks hopefully is closed.

By 2008 the team better be winning 50+ and any rookie would be tied to the bench.

Best post of the week.

When I saw the title to this thread, I immeadiately thought the same thing you were thinking.

As far as that defensive specialist you want, Ruben Patterson would've been a guy that could fit in well here, seeing that he can defend both the 2 and the 3.

I tell you what though. Bonzi Wells would immeadiately send Smoove or Marvin to the bench ( depending on which guy Woodson plays at the 4. ) Bonzi has always been a big time talent. He's just a little crazy like Artest. And his crazyness overshadows his talent at times.

I really just laugh at everyone. I read all these post all the time and most everyone on here jumps to one conclusion or another. Then either praises BK or bashes him. To each their own opinion, but for a long time I assumed that nobody ever bothered to read what others wrote they just spewed their opinion. This takes the cake, to all the other replies go back and read the first 5 words of the original post. It was refering to the fact we get the 2008 pick from Indiana. Therefore they arent looking at us being bad and lottery bound, but Indiana. It could be much like the Chicago situation where they make the playoffs last year and still get the Knicks number 2 pick. Please read before posting next time.

so you dont want any young players ever? we should just be set with this team and ride them till they retire and then rebuild from scratch. Clearly, you know a true team evolves you need the replacements there and learning. I have no problem drafting a star PG in 2008. that gives him 2 years to learn under speedy's new contract and can give him a breather when he needs it because lue will be long gone by then. whats wrong with accumulating talent. And to the above poster I am at work so by the time I got to finsih my post two more responses were entered.

OK how do you get from here to there?

The Hawks have been rebuilding for several years. JB's point, echo'd by me and others, is that it is time to start seeing results.

We shouldn't be counting on a pick two years away to make us contenders.

hopefully we'll be like Dallas and Phx with any draft picks struggling to even make the team.

now
that's
a plan!

I hope we more resemble the SAs of the world who have added value with late picks while winning big (although Dallas and Pho have done this some too with Barbosa, Howards, Daniels, etc.)

I think the point is that everyone hopes that by 2008 the Hawks are only looking for complimentary/bench players since the starters/stars/nucleous of the team is already in place.

If we can get an unprotected 2008 first from Indy I am o.k. with that, but I don't think that will be the case and even if it is I am highly doubtful that pick will be top 10 (Indy, while less talented then in previous years, will still have a frontline of O'Neal, Harrington and Granger).

We could try to package our 2008pick with the one from Indy and try to move up in the draft. We won't be a 50win team in 2008. I see the team winning 35games the 06/07 season and maybe 43 or 44wins in 07/08 season. We will be the 6th or 7th seed in the playoffs in 2008.

You can include me in that group. I hope the Hawks are able to add a star to their team like the Pistons should have done with Carmello, Wade, Bosh, etc. but I hope all they need from the draft is a complimentary piece by 2008.

Well I guess I meant 50 win team by '08/'09 - since it would be the season after the 2008 draft (so not the upcoming season, not the season after that, but the one after that).

At that point, JJ is a grizzled veteran, Chill, Smoove and Zaza all have 4 or more years of service making them veterans, and Marvin, Slim and Sheldon have some solid seasoning.

We keep putting off this rebuilding finalization thing until NEVER. Make our deals, get our players, do it now and be done with it. Build a team that can gow and develop together, not one we will have to rip apart in 2 years!

We will sorely miss not getting a guy like Bynum.
