A very depressing stat about the Hawks.

I have been a Hawks fan since 1988 -89, when I was 8 or 9 years old.

During that time, almost every other team in the east has been to at least 1 conference finals .

The only teams not to go to the conference finals are

Hawks

Wizards

Raptors

Bobcats

The Raptors were an expansion team in 1995 and the Bobcats are just 4 years old.

So really , the Hawks and Wizards are the only 2 non expansion teams not to have a legit contender over that 20 year span sadbanana.gif

Oh we had one in 1994, when we were the top seed in the East. With Jordan out of the way, that should've been our time to shine.

But that fool Babcock traded off Nique, because he wasn't going to give him the extension that Nique wanted, which led him to trade for Manning, so he wouldn't lose Nique for nothing. But when Manning bolted to Phoenix, we still ended up losing Nique . . and a 1st round pick . . for nothing.

Damn . . .Danny Manning is still the player I hate most of all-time. I didn't like him in college, I didn't like him in the NBA, and i despised his azz when he came here . . which turned to sheer hatred when he signed that BS deal with Phoenix and left us hanging.

You just have to wonder if Nique could've elevated his game just one more time during the playoffs, especially with no Jordan around. I knew we weren't going to the Finals after we struggled with Miami. We had no shot vs Indy in that 2nd round.

I think its been alot longer than 88-89 since we made a conferance final, ALOT LONGER. If I remember right the Raptors were a Vince Carter jumper that went in and out of the rim away from the conferance finals the year Philly went to the finals.

Why would you be upset when he left? I was glad. He played like a girl. I they made an all puss NBA team Manning would definitely make it.

Yes, that was the only time we had a chance.Danny Manning got exposed in the playoffs vs Indy, we need a scorer, and Danny couldn't give us that. Then hew didn't want to be "the man" on the hawks, so he left to be Barkley's sidekick.

But 1994 caught people by suprise... we were swept in the first round by the Bulls the year before. No one thought in preseason of 1994 that the Hawks had a chance to go to the finals.

I would be nice, just once... to got into preseason in October thinking we had a chance to win it all.

Playoff

Let look at the facts:

1. Nique was 34 year old when we traded him

2. Nique wanted a raise and 3-4 year deal at the age of 34. He would have been 37 or 38 at the end of the contract he wanted.

3. The season we traded him his FG % was at career low.

4. He was averaging 5.5 ppg less then was the previous year

5. The rapid decline on an athletic wing player has been well documented and Nique was obviously right on the edge of that rapid decline.

6. This is what Nique did in the seasons after we traded him when his new contract would have started:

94-95 BOS 77 64 31.5 .424 .388 .782 2.00 3.20 5.20 2.2 .79 .18 2.25 1.70 17.8

96-97 SAS 63 26 30.9 .417 .293 .803 2.70 3.70 6.40 1.9 .62 .49 2.14 1.60 18.2

98-99 ORL 27 02 9.30 .379 .263 .690 1.10 1.50 2.60 0.6 .15 .04 0.85 0.70 5.0

By year #3 of that possible contract extension, Nique was out of the league playing in Europe. (Very Shawn Alexander like to use an NFL reference.) Then Nique attempted another season at 39 where it was obvious the reality of age had raised it's ugly head.

Nique wanted another big pay day. When Atlanta refused to give it him he ended his career playing on 1 year contracts from there on out. Not even contenders were offering him deals to come off the bench. Robinson was hurt in San Antonio and Duncan was not there yet. Nique was just recognizable face to market. Ditto in Boston, they were not championship material when he was there.

We all what he did after he was gone, but you can't make that trade while you have the BEST record in the east, when the east was so wide open.Who trades a guy that scores 24 to 26 points a game while your in first place?

Lets be honest here. Houston would have crushed us had we made it to the Finals. Hakeem, in his prime, was in a league of his own at that time. He was as dominant as any one I have ever seen, including Jordan, for that 2 year time span. Then we had Shaq and Ewing in his prime to deal with in the Eastern playoffs at a time when physical post play was still allowed.
