I get the points about Orlando playing better in the 2nd half. That is pretty obvious when they outscored us 54 to 25. But the reason they shut us down is: they quit doubling JJ early and he quit passing the ball early. We had no ball movement and no lanes to drive into with JJ stagnantly dribbling into the post taking on his guy and Howard at the sametime.

Orlando killed us for the whole 1st game letting JJ play straight up; then facing Howard or another player late in the post when he tried to get there. Why they decided to take the ball out of JJ's hands early in the 1st half is beyond me.

When Howard is in the middle you have to get by your man quick so you can still make a good move on Howard and/or another player can screen him off. Nothing about JJ's dribble dribble dribble ISO is quick. We scored 25 pts in the second half; quit making excuses for a bad offensive adjustment.

I feel like we're the Suns and Orlando is our Spurs. We can beat any team in the league but that one particular team has our number. As is, we're good enough for a 3 seed and if Orlando is the 1 seed then we can avoid them all the way up to the ECFs. It's too early to be thinking like that but then again it's also too early to be sweating singular losses. Charles Barkley said it best at the end of the Inside broadcast that we can't use that one game as a barometer because just 2 weeks ago we went up to Boston and won in another supposed barometer game so we can't just be written off after a certain loss. The season is long and I'd much rather not deal with the whinefest 4-30 times a year but I do enjoy the sound of crickets for the other 50.

Im not so sure some people didn't enjoy it more when the Hawks were a 50+ loss ball club as opposed to a 50+ win ball club because there were more things for them to complain about.

I feel like some people on here live to B and moan about stuff. Absurd for a team that has the best record in their conference through almost 1/4 of the season to have fans this negative especially considering the drought of success the last 10 years

Sometimes its better when you just shut up and sit back and enjoy the ride. Thats what im doing. Im done complaining or being upset when this is one of the best starts for us in the past 10 years. i mean 12-4..cant be upset with that

As I said in the chatroom last night in the 1st half . . if this was the Hawks teams of years past, the Philly game would've been an AUTOMATIC LOSS. We would've definitely find a way to lose that game. This team may not can beat Orlando, but they're not the "same ol Hawks".

I wonder if by seeing the Bobcats whip up on Cleveland in Charlotte, and Memphis dominate the Blazers in Portland last night, shows people how other "good teams" can also lose bad games.

Good analyis.

I think what we're facing against Orlando, comes down to a matchup problem. You donmt want their gunners to get wide open looks, because they can quickly blow you out if they're knocking down shots. But on the flipside, Dwight can dominate a game if he's assertive in attacking the basket.

For a team like us, we can't really afford Horford and especially Josh to be in foul trouble, so I guess that's why we double Howard every chance we get, and force someone else to beat us. Zaza is usually good in banging against Dwight, but even he wasn't effective in that game.

I think why Orlando fell behind by so much, is because Dwight wasn't attacking, and freely passing the ball out to all those gunners, who weren't making anything. I think Carter was 4 - 12 FG in the first half, while Dwight only had 3 FG attempts.

In the 2nd half, it was all Dwight on both ends on the floor, like you said.

I agree with you in the fact that we may not have a major problem with any other team in the league. But Orlando right now is our kryptonite.

If we would've beat Orlando, tonight's game was the one I expected a letdown in. But we bounced back and got a nice win on the road against Philly.

So what does that make us?

12 - 4 . . right with the Magic . . and still with one of the best records in the NBA.

Contrary to popular belief, the sky does not fall because the Magic takes us out back and beats us up. All it means is that we can't beat the Magic up . . and probably the Lakers ( because they present the same type of matchup problems ).

But we can beat everyone else up.

I am optimistic about our start, but I want to see how we play this month against a supposedly weaker schedule and if we can consistently play well against Boston and Cleveland, as well as find a way to compete against the Magic next game. Then I'll have an opinion about how we stack up overall. It's a long 82 games, and we're only 20% in (but 12-4 is a great start). Glad you have a steady, long-term view and don't over react to the inevitable occasional disappointing performance.

I re-watched that game, especially the 3rd quarter. I don't know man . . we got some pretty wide open looks in that quarter. In fact, we made 4 of our first 5 shots in that quarter. As hot as Bibby was during the Sixer game last night, he was really cold in the Orlando game, for the most part. JJ's floater wasn't falling, when he got into the lane. And if we're in the halfcourt offense, Smith's effectiveness is reduced on the offensive end. With Howard in the lane, he missed a ton of point blank shots. And don't even get me started on Crawford's quick long jumpshots without a pass, even though he was making those same exact shots last night.

Orlando didn't even play that well in the quarter, yet, we couldn't hold the lead because of a bunch of missed shots, and some sloppy ball handling. Oh . . and they also grabbed 7 of their 13 offensive rebounds in that quarter ( not including the rebounds off missed FTs that they list ). Overall, they outrebounded us 19 - 7. LOL. . they had as many offensive rebounds, as we had total rebounds that quarter.

Most important for the Hawks . . only 2 FT attempts ( and one of those was off of the Dwight technical foul ) . . and only 7 for the game. When you see those types of numbers, it either means that a team is taking a lot of jumpshots, or they're not getting any calls.

And the 4th quarter was just ridiculous. It was the same cold shooting by the Hawks, coupled with Anthony Johnson show. We make the adjustment to try to corral Howard, and then "Dad" kills us, by scoring 15 in the quarter. Ridiculous.

I can understand blaming the coach when it comes to personnel moves, or strategy. But just like in that Laker game, we just had a complete meltdown in the 3rd quarter, that continued into the 4th. Otherwise, that team still played the same way as they always played. These are your Atlanta Hawks . . . love them or hate them.

The ball handling has REALLY took a nose dive the last 3 or 4 games. That's stuck out to me. I'm not sure if the turnover numbers the last 3 games point that out, but it seems like the players are having trouble just handling in the ball.... That's causing the shot clock to run down even more. The team played really sloppy in the Houston game. They started playing like the Hawks teams of yesterday and that's where it started. It carried over into the Hornets game and the Magic game. I HATE the way this team plays. They're the anti Jazz. I know they don't turn the ball over as much as it seems like they do, but this team has poor fundamentals. This team leaves 3 pt shooters fairly often. Which is one reason why pretty much any guard has a shot at going off on the Hawks on any given night.

Otherwise, that team still played the same way as they always played. These are your Atlanta Hawks . . . love them or hate them.

Direct quote from Woody below:

“It was like we forgot how we got the lead,” Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. “We played so differently in the second half, so we have to go break this tape down and figure out why that is.”

I do not think Woody would agree with your assesment that we played the 1st half in the same manner as the second. Woody needs to learn how to make adjustments before we get blown out 54 to 25 not after. Maybe he can do that this season; but if not, we need a coach who can. This team is to close to being really, really good to not have a coach that can adjust during the flow of a game. We still may not have won with a Van Gundy, Riley, Saunders, etc.... but I bet they would have made adjustments to try and keep it close; instead of saying we need to look at film to make adjustments after the game.

All Orlando did was stop doubling JJ early and feed Howard the ball. The film he wants to look over is the same film from the 1st game; and a large portion of every game we have played against Orlando the past three or four years.
