Tracking Minutes 2009-10

Here is a thread that will be updated throughout the season. I figured it would be interesting track minutes since many of us think that management of minutes for the long-term is a key failing of Woodson and something he has publicly vowed to improve.

I am going to track minutes for the following. Feel free to add anything you would like:

Category #1 - Joe Johnson

Joe Johnson through 17 games 38.6 mpg

40+ minute games: 3 through first 10 games, 5 of last 7 games (8 of 17 overall)

Category #2 - Mike Bibby

Mike Bibby through 17 games - 30.4 mpg (down from 34 mpg last season)

35+ minute games: 1 through first 10 games, 4 of last 7 games (5 of 17 overall)

Category #3 - Jeff Teague

Jeff Teague through 17 games - 8.8 mpg

Games with 5 minutes and change or less: 10 (59% of total games)

Category #4 - Bench Play (beyond top 6 players)

Great thread. It shows the trend that many have been pointing out. If history is an indicator this is not a blip but will be the norm as long as we don't have injuries. To me the real indicator is bench play beyond Crawford and Zaza. Z will get his minutes often because of foul trouble.

Great post! This will be interesting to keep up with. I do think last nights game might be another record: 87 minutes: most ever given to bench players by Woody.

One point though, I think it is imperative that Teague get ten or more minutes a game. Five in each half would be the minimum to keep him sharp and in the game IMO. I do understand the less than five and change though, as they may as well be DNPs for all intents and purposes.

Very nice to see these numbers trending in the right direction recently with these blowout wins. If Woodson keeps giving Teague some time, he will soon be under 50% for games with 5 minutes and change or less.

As with our play, our player minutes are not trending very well lately. We are shortening the rotation as our top guys are having a series of remarkably ineffective games. Hopefully, this all picks back up and we don't end up burning people out. (As an aside, I am not arguing that playing our bench 70 minutes would have let us beat the Heat or anything -- just that we are trending towards the same problems we ran into last season where players were physically tapped out by the post-season due to lack of bench support. Other teams similar to the the Hawks in ability use their bench to pace their players over 82 games more than we do...at least so far.)

Stick a fork in Teague's development this year...it ain't happening with 8.9 MPG. And it is not like it will get better as we approach the playoffs. *Sigh*

And we really need someone to take Mo Evans' minutes, and would love someone else who could be a reliable rebounding big off the bench to take Zaza's minutes. Oh well, one can only dream, right?
