You're reading that entirely wrong.

More teams plan to build through the draft and exhibit patience.

It didn't say anything about making stupd draft choices or pissing away Free Agent money.

Exactly. I didn't read any suggestions to bypass the two best point guards of their generation in a draft or to sign a point guard with major injury histories or promise the fifth pick of a draft to a scrub without even working them out. Knight got wrong more than he got right.

That is 3 wrongs. Lets add in Law, as a 11th pick, to make it 4 wrongs. However, Law was used to get Jamal Crawford which ended pretty sweet for us. The Speedy signing was not that a bad of tragedy. Most GMs had a salary or three that were much worse then Speedy's contract over a period of 5 seasons.

Now lets look at what BK did right:

1. Smoove was a steal as the 17th pick ! He looks like he will be an allstar this year after just turning 24 last week.

2. The sign and trade Diaw for JJ move has worked out beautifully. As he is working on his 4th allstar season and the Hawks are working on their 3rd consecutive playoff appearence and 2nd consecutive with home court advantage in the 1st round.

3. Al Horford was the best possible pick for this team at #3 & was runner up for ROY

4. Traded scrubs for Bibby

5. Signed ZaZa to a cheap 4 year deal

6. Showed patience by sticking with his blue print. That patience has proven to pay off for the franchise. Most GMs would have gotten trigger happy.

Nurtral Move:

Picked Chillz at #6 - definately not a "bust" pick (like Law and Sheldon) though Deng or Iggy would have been slightly better.

I would have to say that BK hit more then he whiffed.

I think its also important to look at what teams we are chasing in the NBA:

Cavs - lucked out with the #1 pick in the year of Lebron James.............the best player of the next decade and 2nd best player today.

Magic - lucked out and got the #1 pick in the year of Dwight Howard. The best center in the NBA and likely the best center for the next decade.

Celtics - traded away all of their young talent and draft picks for 2 HOF players to go with the HOF player they currently had. Great "win now" moves by Ainge.

Lakers - were already ahead of us 5 years ago. Kobe has been the best player of the last decade and probably still is.

I'd say we have pulled even with the Nuggetts and have pulled ahead of everyone else. The Blazers were right with us but Oden cannot stay healthy. Safe to say we have pulled ahead of the Heat, Spurs, and probably even the Suns well aged roster.

BKs nucleus has caught and surpassed the blue prints of many franchises during it's journey.

the problem with BK wasn't that he missed so often. when he missed, he missed bad.

Huge contract for Speedy Claxton=very bad

Drafting Shelden over Brandon Roy=inexcusable. absolutely inexcusable. even if you think roy and JJ couldn't coexist, he still drafted Shelden Williams.

Missing with every 2nd round pick he ever had=bad

Missing with Acie=bad

Drafting Marvin over CP=turned out awful, but understandable at the time, and most would have made the same call

and Chuck just called the Hawks little pee-wee.

A formula is a formula. a+b+c=d. The formula (in this case we call it a plan) always remains the same with the result depending on what is plugged in. Building through the draft and exhibiting patience WAS Billy Knight's plan, so I disagree that he is reading it wrong. Plugging in better draft choices would have equaled better and probably sooner results/success. But Knight's pan has succeeded to a point where other teams may start to do what Atlanta did.

The drafting of the two Williams counts for a lot IMO. Those two were heavy hits.
