Jamal Crawford & Brandon Roy in a controversial video

Brandon Roy made a brief appearance in a rap music video, but felt the need to apologize once the video hit the internet and there were some things in it that he decided he didn't necessarily want to be associated with.

The video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iwH_wvfJDg, and by most standards -- in terms of people issuing apologies, at least -- this one is relatively tame. It's a positive that Roy is sensitive to how he (and to a larger extent, the league) is portrayed in these situations, but honestly, this is pretty benign in the world of athletes appearing in music videos.

Video of Roy's explanation of how it went down can be seen below.

And if for some reason Roy's explanation didn't do it for you, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iwH_wvfJDg:

"The basic concept of Cali and Cavalli's 'What They Want' is a rags to riches tale of upward mobility -- a standard format that many have seen utilized in recent music videos. It depicts two small-time hustlers ascension from the inner city, where the perils of drug use and fast money are more than evident, to the metaphorical use of basketball and Cali and Cavalli's association with two of Seattle and the NBA's biggest success stories as their own personal barometer of achievement.

To officially clear the air Brandon Roy and Jamal Crawford weren't involved in anyway shape or form with the production, concept, or content of the video and neither were present for anymore than a few minutes of the filming and for the most part were bystanders."

I don't think it's that big of a deal that they made a few, short cameos in the video. Everyone should know that Jamal Crawford and Brandon Roy are two of the most professional players in the NBA. I honestly don't think that this situation should even be discussed by the media. ...... But then again, I'm not helping the matter by posting the news article about it. :zipper:

It's a branding problem, I think Roy jumped the gun. My thought is that had he not said anything, nobody would have ever known. As far as Craw, he looks like he was caught on tape and not necessarily paid to be in the video. Roy was standing around with the guys, but it seems that Craw was showing up to play in a celebrity game or something and they just filmed him. It's probably some guys from the neighborhood that got a CD out and was making a video and asked Roy to be in it and he said OK.

I don't think it is much, but if it were popular, it would be a branding problem.

this is nothing compared to Woody's appearance in that Insane Clown Posse Video a few years back.

I'm guessing a minor fine for each at the worst. B-Roy already apologized and J-Craw will probably issue a simple statement as well. Fortunately it's a crappy song and video which will only get airplay if the national sportswriters get their panties in a bunch over it.

I think Roy jumped the gun b/c he wanted everyone to know that he doesn't like to associate himself w/ stuff like that before someone finds the video themselves. I don't think he wanted to take the risk of not saying anything and someone somehow finding it and making assumptions and making rumors while blowing the whole situation out of proportion.

Roy probably hadnt even seen the video . It seems to me that the guys did a verse or the entire track with Roy in the background and then the director or editor spliced in the rest . This is one of those situations where they shouldnt have to say anything because they would probably be mad at the artists themselves after seeing the final cut .
