Just like Staples... That was easy! 10-1!

San Antonio was so brutally shorthanded and worn down in the paint. 6 Dream players in double figures, including Bebe's fellow Brazilian Erika DeSouza (pictured above). Even with league-leading 3-point shooter (rookie Alex Bentley) having an off day, Angel was able to dish assists left and right, while Tip Hayes and Aneika Henry carried the second half.

I'm going to have to eat my words about team depth! Never mind that Sancho Lyttle won the Eurobasket tourney and the MVP award and is on her way back soon! What's not to like?

Whats not to like?

When your player sets the WNBA record by hitting her 10th three

without a miss, what can we say? We're told that the Dream is not

a three point shooting team. Really?

Quickness, they got that. Rebounding, yep, that too. They fill those

passing lanes, play tenatious defense and aren't afraid to hit the floor

to claim the ball.

They score inside as if that part of the floor was theirs.

Now, they face a long road trip. They won today, have a 10-1 record and

face a long road before their next home game. They had 5359 attendance

today, so they do have a following. Being this good and representing

the Atlanta area, they should have more.

I know. The Braves were home and they were having their annual armed

forces day. This is really tough competition. And, the Braves won!

GO ATLANTA!

Sancho's back! With her return, unfortunately, somebody on the roster had to go, so Anne Marie Armstrong gets the pink slip while once-WNBA-great Ruth Riley takes over the final roster spot.

The Dream (10-1) will be Prime Time Players tonight as they'll face off with the back-to-back defending Western champs, the Minnesota Lynx (8-3), in a nationally televised affair (ESPN2, 9:00 PM Eastern) in Minneapolis. It's the first of a 4-game road swing for the team with the league's best record. Dare I say right now, this might be the WNBA Finals preview? Certainly with the way Angel McCoughtry and ATL's own Maya Moore are playing for their respective teams.

Maya has been up-and-down, though, and is striving for some consistency amidst a star-studded lineup. On Sunday, the Lynx were defensively able to shut down Angel's top MVP competitor (Phoenix's Diana Taurasi) and hope to have the same success tonight if they intend to remain, like the Dream, undefeated at home. Angel will have Sancho at her disposal, though, and Alex Bentley may prove to be an X-Factor.

More than a few NBA fans will probably watch tonight to check out reserve wing Monica Wright, who was recently confirmed as the future Mrs. Kevin Durant. Here's to having your gutters cleaned for life! (EDIT: Wright will start tonight in place of Seimone Augustus, who unfortunately is out with an ankle sprain).

Also, purely for entertainment value, if you enjoy coaches jumping out of their suits when they're fuming mad at the refs, trust me, Minnesota's Cheryl Reeve is for you! She has a glare that can cut like a Ginsu.

Statistical tale-o-the-tape via the StarTribune:

http://www.startribune.com/sports/lynx/214697891.html

Rebounding will be tougher for the Lynx (1st in second-chance points) tonight, without Augustus available.

Speaking of stars like Angel, Freddie Freeman ain't the only ATLete looking for (and deserving of) All-Star votes! Vote now! Vote often!

http://allstarballot.wnba.com/

My current ballot -

EAST

(Guards) Ivory Latta, Epiphanny Prince (Frontcourt) ANGEL MCCOUGHTRY, SANCHO LYTTLE, Sylvia Fowles

WEST

(Guards) Diana Taurasi, Seimone Augustus (Frontcourt) Maya Moore, DeWanna Bonner, Candace Parker

Hey, you know it ain't a REAL Atlanta team unless they're flopping on national TV somewhere! lol

But Bob had a great takeaway from the blowout loss last night up in Minny.

Don't you miss that R-word, Hawks fans?

Dream versus Marvin's old flame Camille Little and the Seattle Storm tonight at 9 PM EST (SportSouth). One hour before Hawks Vegasball,

Brain freeze! My bad. No local TV tonight. Plus Sancho (foot) and Angel (Achilles) are out of action, along with Tip Hayes still out. Still up 5 at the half.

Alas, poor first place! We knew it well. LOL

Well, that was fun while it lasted! As Chicago got their critical pieces together to go on an 8-1 run, the injury bug that befell most of the rest of the league early on finally came and bit ATL hard. Sancho is likely out until at least the last week of the year. Fresh off a wildly successful Eurobasket tourney, she had surgery on a broken left foot last week after briefly appearing in the Minnesota game. Tip Hayes will also be out for a couple weeks healing a knee injury. And Angel is trying to hold it all together despite a strained Achilles.

All that added up to some brutal losses at Seattle (the second half, anyway) and Tulsa, and a spirited effort that fell just short against the Sparks in L.A. While Candace Parker should have been accepting her ESPY Award for best Women's basketball player across the street at the Nokia Theatre, some WNBA braniac at the scheduling department decided it would be a great idea to field a WNBA contest between her and the Dream at the same time. Erika DeSouza helped "L.A.'s Other CP3" suffer a bad shooting night (2-10 FGs), while racking up 15 and 18 points herself. But Angel and Erika aren't getting much firepower from the supporting crew.

The aggravating Achilles heel that is three-point shooting has returned for the Dream, as opposing defenses collapse on Atlanta's perimeter shooters absent Sancho and Tiffany. On this road trip, the Dream shot a Platinum Sombrero of 0-for-17 on threes against the Shock, following a mere 1-for-7 versus L.A., 4-for-17 at Seattle, and 5-for-19 at Minny.

Angel and Erika will need someone to step up and knock down shots to space the floor effectively, if Atlanta intends to remain undefeated at home. Will rookie Alex Bentley play better now that she's back in front of a home crowd? The Dream may have to wheel-and-deal to find some more reliable shooters before the trading deadline arrives. In the meantime they're trying to pile up points in the paint, in halfcourt and in transition.

Tonight's opponent at the Highlight Factory, Connecticut (4-11) is just 1-6 on the road. But the Sun will have a healthier set of guards than they did in their June matchup, with Tan White, Renee Montgomery, and Kara Lawson all likely to be available. I think the game should be on Fox Sports South tonight for those watching from home.

First place in the WNBA East is not completely out of the question! Super-rookie Elena Delle Donne was cruising right along for the Sky until she suffered a concussion in the second half of Chicago's loss to Washington this afternoon. It's hard to tell how long she'll be sidelined (the All-Star break is this weekend), but the Sky would be a different team without her and Atlanta remains just one game out heading into tonight's action.

Go Dream!

Great defense in that first half (team-record-low 20 points for the opponent), and a good heaping of Alex Bentley in the second half helped the Dream hold off the Sun at the end. Bentley stepped up when Angel McCoughtry drew her fifth foul halfway through the third quarter.

Back in the winning column!

Congrats to Angel for being named an All-Star starter! Erika DeSouza should have gotten a reserve nod in my opinion, but might still get in as an injury replacement for Delle Donne. The ASG will be on Saturday.

Also, it should be noted that Matt Ryan's wife accepted an administrative job with the Dream recently. She played hoops at Boston College.

Erika DeSouza gets that injury spot. Tough break for EDD (and WNBA TV ratings) but congrats to Erika! Would've been nice for AJC to modify the AP headline for Atlanta-centrism's sake but hey, it's the AJC.

http://www.ajc.com/news/ap/sports/delle-donne-to-miss-all-star-game-with-concussion/nY43r/

Delle Donne, who is averaging 18.2 points a game, is the first rookie to lead the All-Star voting and will be replaced on the Eastern Conference roster by Atlanta's Erika de Souza.

All-Star Game featuring Angel and Erika is tomorrow at 3:30 PM Eastern.

The back half of the WNBA season is underway! The pace of the schedule picks up a ton for most teams between now and mid-September, especially for the Dream. Atlanta had breaks of four or more days between games on six occasions between May and the All-Star Break. They’ll only get two such stanzas the rest of the way.

One of those two remaining long breaks comes after tonight’s game, on the road versus Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury (10:00 PM on NBATV). The Dream will get a full week off before playing the surging defending champion Indiana Fever at the Fieldhouse next Saturday.

They’ll play 11 games in August, and seven in the first half of September, compared to just five games played in July. Despite their modest success, the Dream have never won more than 20 games (20-14 in 2011) in a season. They need to just play .500 ball the rest of the way to match that.

Teams that have rested up and fine-tuned their strategies will be on the top end of the conference standings come playoff time. It remains to be seen whether the Dream’s frenetic pace of play and the crucial absence of Sancho Lyttle will catch up to them now that there’s less rest time in-between games.

But they’re in good shape as it stands, 11-5 and just one game behind the Chicago Sky as their star rookie Elena Delle Donne remains day-to-day with a concussion. If Chicago falls tonight in Indiana (on right now on NBATV), Atlanta can move back into first by winning tonight. They've only finished as high as 2nd place in the East once, in their initial postseason voyage of 2009.

Tonight we’ll get to see the face-off between two of the leading MVP candidates in Tauarasi and Angel McCoughtry. Taurasi leads the WNBA in scoring but struggled in her last outing, a loss at Seattle on Thursday. Angel led the WNBA in scoring for the month of July (20.8 PPG) but shot just 34.9% as she found herself overcompensating for the loss of Lyttle and Tiffany Hayes.

Mercury coach Corey Gaines (remember when he played in the 1990s?) guided his team to the WNBA title in 2009, but is now on the hot seat after a three-game losing streak has dropped the team to a 9-10 record. Seeming to tank late last season for the payoff of the top pick in the lottery, Phoenix is currently a disappointing 3-5 at home, and Gaines must right the ship to keep the Merc from sinking further in a competitive Western Conference.

Brittney Griner is getting her dunking legs back after missing 5 games (plus the All-Star Game) with a sprained left knee. Despite her shot-blocking prowess (2.9 BPG), she’s not getting much help as the Merc is giving up a league-leading 85.4 PPG to opponents. She’ll need a stronger defensive presence from forwards DeWanna Bonner and Candice Dupree, as she’ll have her hands full with Erika DeSouza, who carried Atlanta through the rough patch of July (14.0 PPG and a whopping 14.2 RPG last month).

Phoenix will try to play Atlanta physical and take advantage at the free throw line, where they’re shooting a league-leading 82.7 FT%, compared to Atlanta’s 72.8 FT%. Taurasi leads the league in free throws made (5.7 FTM/G), while McCoughtry (4.9) is in fourth place, a shade ahead of Phoenix’s Bonner (4.7). The Dream’s free-throw shooting ranks second-lowest in the WNBA.

Atlanta is in that familiar position of dead-last in three-point field goal shooting (28.0%). But the good news is Phoenix is right behind them (28.9%). Plus, Dream opponents shoot just 29.4% on the year from deep, second-lowest in the league, while the Merc’s foes shoot a league-high 35.9%. With Angel and Diana offsetting one another offensively, points off transition and a big night by Alex Bentley can tip the scales in Atlanta’s favor. The rookie Bentley ranks 4th among WNBA players shooting 40.9% on threes in road games. Atlanta generates a league-leading 17.5 opponent TOs per game, while Phoenix's 11.3 ranks dead-last.

(EDIT: Chicago's loss to Indy just now moves Atlanta within a half-game, going into tonight's action)

Go Dream!

Well, the Must Win game for Corey Gaines was won by the Merc, but it proved to be all for naught when they lost badly at home, again, to Seattle on national TV. Gaines was relieved of his duties afterwards, and that canning nearly came to pass when the Mercury managed to nearly cough up an 9-point lead in the final two minutes. It was a great comeback for Atlanta, but sloppy play and a lack of reliable offensive options aside from the usual suspects eventually did them in. This team can start great, but without Sancho and Tip, they don't seem to have the horsepower to finish.

The Dream (11-6) have played 3 fewer games than anyone else in the league at this point in the schedule. They'll start to make up for it with their first back-to-back of the season this weekend. Tonight's game in Indiana is at 7 PM EST (on NBATV, and for local yokels on FoxSports South via FoxSports Indiana), then they fly home to meet up with Bill Laimbeer's New York Liberty at the Highlight Factory on Sunday night (6 PM EST).

As rough a patch as this has been, Atlanta's still one of just 4 WNBA teams with an above-.500 record. The defending champ Fever (10-11) hope to reach .500 on their home floor, and will look to avenge their first home loss of the season back on May 31. That game was the first sign that the Dream could indeed be a problem this year. Indy was also missing Finals MVP Tamika Catchings in the June 25 game in Atlanta.

Angel McCoughtry is averaging a WNBA-high 4.3 TOs/game, but again, it's more about who's she passing to, as she's pressing to get her teammates involved in the offensive action.

Trading deadline is on the 15th, so look for a couple of underutilized players to be showcased by GM/Coach Freddy Williams.

Go Dream!

The WNBA trade deadline came and went yesterday evening, and yawwwwwwwwwwwn. Nothing went down at all for any teams. That’s a bit disconcerting for the freefalling Atlanta Dream, but with every WNBA squad within reasonable reach of the playoffs, GM/coach Fred Williams hands were probably tied whether he wished to make a move or not.

Once 10-1 and a reasonable bet to come out of the East for its third WNBA Finals appearance, the Dream is now regressing to the mean, dropping eight of their last nine games. When they came home from the disastrous West Coast road trip, a convincing victory over the last-place Connecticut Sun was just what the doctor ordered heading into the break. Now they play again tonight (7:30 PM, SportSouth) at Philips Arena, but this time, Anne Donovan’s 7-15 squad looks to climb back into playoff contention by completing a home-and-home sweep. A loss for Atlanta tonight would mark their first five-game losing string in five years.

At Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Arena on Wednesday, Angel McCoughtry (33 points, 8 rebounds) keyed a comeback in the third quarter after a listless first half, and led by 3 going into the final minute of action. Then, after the Sun tied the game on a three-pointer by Renee Montgomery, one of the team’s signature bugaboos showed up.

Armintie Herrington (15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals) was fouled on the next possession, but missed both free throws (Atlanta went 13-for-20 at the stripe while Connecticut went 14-for-16), setting up Tan White’s huge game-winning jumper with 0.6 seconds left. The Dream remains last in the league with 72% on free throws. Armintie’s a savvy veteran, yet her dreadful 56.5% shooting is her lowest in six seasons.

Atlanta’s matching Achilles’ heel has been three-point shooting (26.2%, last in the WNBA). Teams have figured out that Atlanta simply can’t catch up when they’re buried beneath an avalanche of three-point shots. The Sun shot 8-for-14 on threes while Atlanta could muster just three triples (two by the newly-returned Tiffany Hayes) out of 11 shots.

Although continuing to lead the league in steals, Atlanta's defense has definitively sagged without Sancho Lyttle around. The team that kept opponents below 80 points for 13 of the 16 games before the All-Star Break, including ten games in a row, has since given up 80 or more in each of the last four.

Hayes’ return is right on time, and the Dream will need a boost in defensive activity and offensive production to make up for the train wreck that has been LeCoe Willingham. Willingham shot 0-for-5 against the Sun and seems unable to slow down anybody (-18 on the plus/minus in 19 minutes of action, although she managed two steals). To keep Hayes on the floor, McCoughtry will have to play more minutes at the power forward spot. While Angel’s undersized at that position, she can be no worse than what they’ve been getting out of Willingham. Also, look for Aneika Henry to get steadier minutes going forward.

While Atlanta’s got five of their next six games at home, the next five get played over the next eight days, and two of the home games are against the league’s first-place teams. Minnesota arrives next Tuesday and next Saturday they’ll get Chicago, who could have Elena Delle Donne back from a sprained foot by then, in a nationally-televised contest. This weekend’s games at Philips against Connecticut and Washington are huge must-wins if the Dream intend to turn this slump around.

Go Dream!

Today's game is at 3 PM at the Factory. SportSouth locally and NBA-TV nationally. A Dream win reestablishes a cushion against the surging Mystics, who've won three straight but have lost their last seven games versus Atlanta. A win by the Styx keeps their streak going and moves them within one game of Atlanta, who have Minnesota coming to town on Tuesday.

Sparse Friday night crowd against Connecticut but the Dream built up big, entertaining runs at the start of both halves (18-1 in the first quarter; 16-0 to start the third). The Dream tightened up their perimeter defense (Sun was 1-for-9 on threes), offsetting Atlanta going 2-for-7 from deep. The Dream really tightened up on free throws (24-for-26; Angel 11-for-11) and they simply need to keep it up. Underutilized former Dream star Izi Castro Marques was about the only thing going right for Connecticut, and fellow ex-Dream star Ivory Latta hopes to follow in Izi's path today.

1st quarter, Washington ran away and hid.

Problem was, they forgot that the Dream were there hunting a victory.

By halftime, the Dream had finally caught up and led by 1.

The second half was all Dream and they came away with a big win.

Probably no need for a panic-button pushing, but keep it handy.

Brazil added Erika to their roster ahead of the FIBA Americas tourney (September 21-28), which coincides with the first round and maybe a little bit of the Conference Finals of the WNBA playoffs.

http://lovewomensbasketball.com/2013/08/20/veterans-added-to-brazilian-roster-starring-erika-de-souza-ahead-of-fiba-americas-championship/

DeSouza also missed Games 2 and 3 of the 2011 Conference Finals (which Atlanta won) and Game 1 of the 2011 WNBA Finals to help out Brazil with their Olympic qualifier.

I suspect this time around, her National team is merely hedging against the unlikely possibility the Dream miss the playoffs and DeSouza becomes available. Although Brazil, recently winning their 14th straight FIBA South American title, lacks anyone with her height or talent level, their team is talented enough to get through this Olympic qualifier without her.

Not shocking that Izi didn't make that roster, one too many bridges burned.

16-and-16 from Erika last night in that great win, wearing out the thin Lynx frontline for the All-Star's 11th double-double. Sancho Lyttle should be back at the end of the season, but she shouldn't have to play center. I'd love to have Sancho back for the last couple of regular season games so the team could gel ahead of the playoffs, but they'll have to clinch first, then wait-and-see.

Atlanta's road woes continued last night in DC, dropping one 74-64 after collapsing in the final quarter. Shooting 1-for-18 from the three-point line ain't pretty, and Angel McCoughtry (0-for-7, 19.3 3FG% this season) isn't helping matters by taking too way many shots beyond her range. Atlanta is now an abysmal 18.3% on threes on the road. One can blame the new international line, but that figure is nowhere near the next worst team (Phoenix) shooting 28.9% in road games. In losses, Atlanta has shot just 16.9%. Does Kyle Korver have any sisters?

At least one of Alex Bentley or Tiffany Hayes (a combined 5-for-21 last night) has to produce offensively if the Dream is going to have the horsepower to win on the road. Atlanta's 3-9 record in away games is the 4th worst in the league, and securing first-round homecourt advantage for the first time in Dream history will be tough when they have to play 4 of their last 5 games away from Philips Arena (league-leading 11-1 at home).

But enough of all that. It's Home Sweet Home for tonight's nationally-televised game (7 PM Eastern, ESPN2) against Elena Delle Donne, Sylvia Fowles, Epiphanny Prince and the Chicago Sky. The Worldwide Leader in its infinite wisdom recently kicked the WNBA Finals rematch of Indiana and Minnesota to the curb to air this game instead, so apparently somebody up in Bristol is expecting some good entertainment tonight!

The Sky (8-6 on the road) are already celebrating the clinching of their first playoff spot in their 8 seasons of existence. A big win tonight at The Highlight Factory would all but wrap up the regular-season title for Chicago (19-8, 4-game winning streak) and homecourt advantage in the Eastern Conference.

Washington stayed in the game on Friday by keeping turnovers to a minimum (9). Chicago gives up the fewest TOs per game of any Eastern Conference team (13.2), so the Dream's signature transition scoring could be stymied. To counter, Atlanta has to play smart defense and avoid silly fouls. Chicago is the East's most-fouled team (19.2 opponent PF/game), and they're the sharpest free throw shooting team (81.7 FT%). A rookie, Delle Donne leads the WNBA shooting 91.7 FT%.

Despite all the attention on super-scorers McCoughtry and Delle Donne, there'll be another battle of the titans in the paint. In the last ten games, Fowles (11.6 RPG) and Erika DeSouza (11.1 RPG) are #1 and #2 in rebounds per game. DeSouza leads the WNBA in that 10-game stretch with a 62.1 FG%, while Fowles ranks third (59.3 FG%).

Don't look down! Despite the freefall, the Dream's magic number for clinching another playoff berth is 2. They're sliding fast having dropped 4 straight (including a crushing OT home loss to Washington, and getting blown out in Chicago this past week) while hampered by injuries (Tiffany's knee, Armintie's concussion, and of course Sancho's foot, plus Angel bothered by an ankle injured vs. D.C.). But if the New York Liberty don't go 3-1 (and they won't) the Dream should be selling playoff tickets by next week. Maybe even by Friday. Assuming Atlanta doesn't beat Candace Parker's L.A. Sparks tonight and the defending champ Indiana Fever on Wednesday, they can wrap up a spot on Friday in Newark against the Libs, who have dropped 3 straight.

Alex Bentley managed a career-high 19 points for the shorthanded Dream on Saturday night, a positive sign.

No news on Sancho's return, but she's right in the middle of the 6-8-week timeframe for returning after having successful foot surgery back on July 15.

Happy Labor Day!

Sweet! We got our own forum! :-)

That ugly losing streak got bookended by the Lynx win and the big home win against the Sparks. Erika (career-high 27 points) showed her mettle against CP3 (Candace Parker) and Alex Bentley set a franchise record with 11 assists. They've got to bottle what works at The Highlight Factory and carry it on the road. After tonight, 4 of their final 5 matchups will be away games.

The Champs Are Here tonight at 7 PM Eastern (Bob Rathbun and LaChina Robinson with the coverage on SportSouth). With the Eastern regular season title out of reach, Indiana (13-15) is not only looking to secure their playoff spot (magic number at 3), but also to wrest homecourt advantage away from the Dream (15-13). Conversely, Atlanta (playoff magic number down to 1, can clinch tonight) would love nothing more than to keep Indy in the 4th seed and let them wrangle it out with Chicago while the Dream take on Washington in the first round.

No word on Armintie, Tip, or Sancho's statuses yet. Anne Marie Armstrong was back momentarily on a 7-day contract, but I'm not sure if she's been renewed in time for today's game.
