Trout7
All you ever hear anymore in NBA talk is discussion about how one team matches up against another. It seems like teams and the fans just use it as an excuse to play like crap against teams you "don't much up well against. I am of the opinion it is like the saying "you are what your record is", the same here applies in the fact if your a$$ gets handed to you it is not because of "matchups" but because they are the better team.
Popular Post rd79
Aaaahhhhh..... no! Every player who isn't a superstar has strengths and weaknesses. If he plays vs players who have the needed strength to negate his strengths and use his weaknesses, he is doomed. A team should be build a way the strengths of players complement each other so weaknesses can't be exposed often. But there are situations where a player's kryptonite stops a player or a whole team. Did we struggle vs Net last year because they were the better team? No they were a bad matchup. Bad matchup doesn't necessarily mean to lose, but to have more difficulties than one could expect by comparing the record. But in such matchups coaching matters because the coach has to make the right adjustments to stop the exposing of his player's weaknesses.

Almost every team sport is about matchups. And if your team is especially good at stopping the other team from scoring, you're normally really good.
hazer
Ummmmm, no. It's ALL about matchups. 1/4 star post.....
Premium Member Atlantaholic Posted March 26, 2016 Premium Member Report Share Posted March 26, 2016 Sorry bro, but you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I will concede that sometimes there is a mental aspect to matchups, but to say matchups are just an excuse to play like crap is ridiculous.

Alex
It's just some lame excuse the fans use to justify having to battle the Nets or the Wallless Wizards last year. It's used in every team sport nowadays as a plain ole excuse.
Lurker
Ah yes, let’s continue to go over something almost a year old, ESPECIALLY when the Wizards haven’t made a very convincing argument that John Wall makes ALL the difference in the aftermath of that series! Word on the street is it took them playing their best game of the SEASON in that one win over Atlanta. Nope, Paul Pierce was the biggest factor in Washington’s success in last season’s playoffs. He single handedly took the will to win away from Toronto.
Alex
The matchup excuse is generally reserved for fan bases who feel sorry for themselves. Usually the teams who are middling and find themselves on a treadmill.

Usually the teams who are middling and find themselves on a treadmill. There's a reason why the Hawks were scrambling before the playoff rosters could be set, to add a SF or a big. We had to do one or the other in order for the team to get to that next level. Why? Because our long range shooting was erratic, we didn't have a go to scorer at the end of games, and we were absolutely getting killed on the boards. We're 11 - 2 since Humphries has been inserted in the lineup. Why? Because he not only addresses a major deficiency of the Hawks ( rebounding, specifically on the defensive end ), his presence has turned our bench unit into one of the best in the league. In fact, check this out. Per 36 minutes numbers HORFORD 17.3 ppg - 8.0 rebs - 3.6 asst - 1.7 blks - 0.9 stls 51% FG - 35% 3FG - 80% FT ( 1.7 att ) - 57% TS - 19.9 PER - .178 WS/48 HUMPHRIES 17.9 ppg - 9.1 rebs - 1.4 asst - 1.0 blks - 1.0 stls 49% FG - 24% 3FG - 72% FT ( 5.5 att ) - 57% TS - 17.2 PER - .176 WS/48 Do you realize how big time this is? It means that we're able to keep a balanced team on the floor at all times, both offensively and defensively. And unlike the folk hero Pero Antić, Humphries actually impacts the game in many ways that register in the box score. LOL @ matchups mean very little. Even in this women's game of Tennessee vs Syracuse, it was the 4 guard/3 point barrage of Syracuse that gave the taller, more physical, but less 3 point reliant Tennessee team all kinds of fits today. And the quickness of those guards caused a plethora of turnovers. The result? The Lady Vols end up getting worn down and blown out in the 4th quarter. When overall talent is close to even or somewhat close, matchups are EVERYTHING. Edited March 27, 2016 by TheNorthCydeRises

Alex
You don't hear the successful teams crying about match ups or their respected fan bases whining.
