This is the route I'm interested in for Sharife...

It's all hands on deck for 21-22 to win a championship. Give me a vet in every cell of the 3rd column of the depth chart grid if I can get it.

If the kid earns his way on to the 15-man at some point, great. But let him earn it. Maybe he will. But it's a viable question. Not everyone comes into the NBA w/o a reliable shot, and develops enough of one to stick.

It's a terrible route. His 3rd year max is 4/60. His 4th year max is massive. It's like JC money. The cheaper the max, the better. NO got a 1st round pick for Graham but for Ball, NO got a 2nd rounder. Cheaper max, more easy to retain.

(To be clear, my comment was only to demonstrate that if a guy plays well enough to deserve the money, as long as the team holds rights to him when that happens, it's a net gain for the team. It worked out in MIA. It can work out here.)

Cooper will never start here like Graham moving forward for the Hornets. His value to getting him good enough to make another team want him as a starter, get a 1st for him. That's elite asset management.

Need help!  I'm trying to understand Trae's extension.  Spotrac has it listed as a $172.5M deal.  I understand the first year, $29.75M is exactly 25% of the 2022-2023 cap, $119M.  But my understanding is on rookie max extenstions Trae would be getting 8% increases every year after that which would look like this:

  • Year 1: $29.8M
  • Year 2: $32.1M
  • Year 3: $34.7M (this is where we start deviating)
  • Year 4: $37.5M
  • Year 5: $40.5M

But Spotrac has this estimated (below): where am I off?  I have the total at $174.5M but they show $172.5M

To add to this, I saw Yahoo report it as $168M (assuming no all-NBA) and a tweet that said $170M, spotrac at $172M, and i calculated $174M... How are there so many different answers?!

Honestly I would say don't worry your pretty little head about it. Next season's cap number will be revised once more based on revenue.  I believe Sportrac is just working off a cap estimate so results may vary.

The initial projections last year was a $115 mil salary cap for 2022. At the start of the new league during FAcy, it was reported that the projections jumped by $5 mil to $119 mil. Trae's deal starts at 25% of $119 mil plus 8% raises each year. So the $168 was based on $115, the $172 based on $119.

The $172M is what confuses me.  If you base off $119M, 25% of that is exactly $32.130 which Spotrac has.  But their subsequent years aren't increasing by 8%.  I know there aren't huge differences here but moreso trying to make sure my math is right...

A side note here. We are not hamstrung to a vet min or 5.9 MLE if we resign Lou. Lou is ours and we can use whatever we want to retain him.

Hypothetically, what's the highest we can go to resign him?

That felt a lot like when you 4 year old asks you, "Dad, how many stars are in the sky" and you could put it out there but decide to say more than a million hoping he'll be quiet and go back to sleep. Giving the correct answer will just lead to 87 more questions.

Whoever is in their math department is struggling, lol.

Alright, been looking at this for a minute... I don't really see how we retain Heurter for the 2022-2023 season without going into the tax, unless we dump someone like Gallo for a TPE.  We still need 5 more roster spots and have around $11M to fill them for that season.

Here's one scenario that incorporates Huerter @ $15m, and has Collins at $25m. (Mind you, this is from a few weeks ago.)

Importantly, Gallo's guarantee is only $5m. And, the thresholds are going to be higher evidently.

We'll likely be in the taxpayer bracket. But it's expected that our contender status will justify that.

I would assume Gallo is out at $20 mil.

Since the projected cap increase LT will also increase from $140 to maybe 145.ish

So, with the signing of Lou Williams at $5 million, we are basically at $130 million (below the luxury tax line) with one open roster spot and a pair of two-way contracts (Skylar Mays and Shariffe Cooper).
