We still need to make a major move...

As many posters have said on this board the Hawks haven't truley upgraded their team since last season.

Lets take a quick look at our moves this off-season in comparison to our starting five and bench.

Starters in 2008-2009

PG Mike Bibby (re-signed 3 yrs.) = no change

SG Joe Johnson (1 yr. remaining on contract) = no change

SF Marvin Williams (still unsigned) (could possibly be replaced by JJ at SF and Jamal goes to SG) = no significant change

PF Josh Smith (under contract) = no change

C Al Horford (under contract) = no change

6th man Mo Evans (final yr. of contact) = no change

BN Flip Murray (still unsigned; probably will not be signed by Hawks b/c of depth at guard position) (Jamal could potentially be on the bench depending on what happens with Marvin) = no change

BN Zaza (resigned) = no change

BN Acie Law (replaced with Teague) = time will tell how this works out; Acie wasn't benefiting to the team anyways...=slight improvement if Teague contributes

BN Solo, Rio (not signed) = loss

So our only loss is really not resigning Solo and Rio yet. But as you can see this team has not improved that much since last yr. if any. We still need to go out and get a SF and a backup defensive stopper.

I'm pretty sure Crawford is an upgrade over Flip. I wouldn't expect much more than another marginal big man at this point.

I agree it may be an upgrade. But flip was awesome last yr. We have to see how Crawford works with woody. That may be the only upgrade at this point and just b/c of Jamal doesn't mean we will be a top 3 seed.

The only way this team becomes a 3 seed is by improving. We're not going to make any moves that shift the balance of power on paper.

Often times the wisest moves are the ones that are not made.

Why do people complain so much Here? The Hawks have one of the youngest teams in the league, won 47 games last year, Have improved every year over the last 5 years but yet all you get are complaints from certain poster! With amount of complaining here, you would think that we were the Clipper! Can our front court at least reach 25 years of age before we totally give up on them? The weirdest part of most of the complaining is that many poster are desperate to trade our young player for older players on other teams that have not won anything either like Bosh, JO, Mello or Amare Stoudamire etc who are making 2-3 times as much and not only no rings but haven't advanced any further than the Hawks in the playoffs. I will never understand the culture here.

It's not going to happen. They just re-signed Marvin to a big deal. The LITTLE improvement you get from Flip to Jamal Crawford is the only upgrade. Which means this team is falling behind. Same weaknesses as last season. Same ones.

Or we can sign backup PF like Wilcox, if Smoove does not cut the three jacking out and box out, then Wilcox plays. JJ cuts down on the forced jumpers early in the clock and we rotate on D....we improve aleast 5-6 games right there.

I'm not convienced Boston will be that much better this upcoming season. No one knows how Garnett is going to come back, or even when- January?

Wallace isn't KG, heck the Wallace of 09, isn't the Wallace of 05. 'Sheed helps the C's, but not by a whole lot.

There is considerable debate as to if Cleveland or Orlando have improved. I am not certain the Shaq experience in Cleveland is going to work out. James has never worked with a guy like Shaq. It will take them some time to figure it out. Plus, the Cavs still have Mike Brown as HC. From all reports he's just as offensively challenged as Woody. It will be very interesting to see if thier OC can come up with some system that allows LBJ and Shaq to share the ball.

Orlando's move to replace Hedo with Vince may or may not work. Many of the pundits don't feel that way, same as many posters here.

Point is, that of the three teams above the Hawks last year, not one of them has made that move that truely seperates them from the rest of the field, including the Hawks.

As for those below. Chicago is doing some interesting things. But, who do they replace Gordon with? I am not a big BG fan, but he was their best shooter. Getting Boozer will be nice, but they had better get a sniper or Boozer will find the doubles on him difficult to deal with.

Miami has done nothing. A year older O'Neil isn't going to help.

Of the lotto teams, maybe Washington has had the best off season, maybe.

Point is, that if the Hawks do indeed resign Williams and then add one more big, they are a better team.

1) they learned how to close out a tough series, while hurt, against Miami last year

2) They are 1 year older, wherein that year is bad for the C's and older players like O'Neil in Miami, its very good news for the Hawks

3) They added Crawford, who for the first time in his career has some other guys to take on the scoring burden. I am not saying Crawford will be the savior of the team, but he will replace Murray with better scoring

4) adding one more big will be, well BIG, for the team. A guy like Wilcox or maby Voshkul really finishes out the roster. The Hawks were just killed on the boards last year. Getting a rebounder will make a huge difference for the team. Add in that Horford should work on his rebounding this summer, and we may have solved some of the rebounding issues (the rest is up to Smith dedicating himself to being a rebounder- I don't know if that will happen- be great if it did though).

...said perfectly. We don't need a major move, we just need to add some depth with another contributing big. We have a team that knows each other, that is young but maturing and has chemistry. Having chemistry is what really makes a team successful or not. I think Orlando for instance is going to really miss Hedo and Lee even though they acquired Carter.

I also agree, those other teams added BIG NAMES but that doesn't mean that they're any better. We're doing exactly what we need to do to improve our team, if......IF we add that big that we all want I think this we be a very good offseason. Stop complaining!!!!!!!!

I agree, It seems that, going by the moves that were made the last couple years, the teams that made moves to disrupt their starting core where the ones that faltered the most. The Suns were the best team in the west two years ago when they acquired Shaq only to falter down the road and then get knocked out in the first round. They then missed the playoffs entirerly the next year. Then last year Philly acquires Brand and that took them away from the style of play they were successul with. Toronto acquired JO and that didn't work as well with Bosh as they had hoped. Kidd in Dallas, Marion in Miami etc. etc.

Using those examples it remains to be seen what Shaq brings to Cleveland considering how he didn't help Pheonix and the Carter move in Orlando holds the most amount of pressure because anything short of a championship will deem that move a failure. Knowing ole Vince, that may be too much pressure to handle. The move mostly likely to work is Boston's acquisition of 'Sheed. If their starting lineup returns healthy then bringing him off the bench only works to enhance them because despite his boisterous reputation they are the team changing their chemistry the least.......next to us of course (hopefully)

How true. People want a Blockbuster move, but it aint gonna happen. Not with our budget and ownership group.

People also forget that 80% of our team is still developing so we will just be better being another year older.

Al, Marvin, Smoove & Zaza should all continue to improve and Bibby is coming off his best year in a while.

Hopefully Crawford will ease JJ's minutes so he won't have to play injured in the playoffs again this year.

Yes, there were hardly no major changes except for the Crawford trade but you have to remember that the natural growth of the younger players will allow the Hawks to be better next year.

Agreed. Not only are we one of the youngest teams in the league but we were the youngest team to make the 2nd round of the playoffs.

Heaven forbid a team as young as the Hawks aren't title contenders. Teams as young as we are almost never win titles. The biggest problems are impatience and just overall pessimism. I find it humorous and annoying at the same time

Ok wait a min. Keeping out starting lineup is an upgrade. That means better chemistry. These players have been playing with each other for now 3 seasons (counting this upcoming year). Crawford coming off the bench = huge upgrade!! If Joe tires or is having an off game, Crawford, who averaged 19ppg is just like having a starter in their. Resigning Zaza just means more aggresiveness and quailty bench minutes.

If we can add 2 more big men, one being Anderson, then our team is a 50 game winner and fighting for a 3 spot in the East!!!

In considering a big we have to keep in mind what we need them for. Don't need an offensive guy but one who can rebound, be tough in the post and play D. Anything beyond that is a big plus. That being said some of the lesser names come to mind . . . . . but I'd still love to have Wilcox who can also play some offense.
