In honor of Gustavo Ayón and his newly appointed nickname (Ayón Flux), let's list the top movies that suckered you in with great promos, a star-studded cast...and twenty bucks you'll never see again because the movie stunk so bad....

The Fifth Element got me even worse because I bought the DVD.Other wastes of time and $$$...Krushgroove (nothing worthwhile other than Sheila E taking it off)The Firm (great book, horrible movie)The Matrix Revolutions (unfavorited this movie so my cable guide wouldn't even pick it up)Cannonball Run II (made Godfather III look like a classic)and the holder of the belt...The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai (the graphics used in the promos had me convinced that this would remembered like Star Wars or Bladerunner. I wanted to send the movie theater an invoice for the $$$ I wasted. I'm getting angry just thinking about it...)

the american wasn't that bad. not great, but not horrendous.

lots of bad movies. much ado about nothing is horrible; joss whedon, director of the avengers.

just watched 10 minutes of the reluctant fundamentalist.

the care bears movie was not the porn fest that I expected; got mixed up with my little pony.

Dinner for Schmucks was hilarious! And the fifth element? Really?? That's a classic!

Its all in expectation i think. I expected a lot out of dinner for schmucks. It had its moments but i thought it was pretty bad. There again I can't say I remember anything about it.

The fifth element? Maybe I just didn't get it.

I probably liked DFS more than most because I've seen almost every actor in it in other things that I've enjoyed them in and it was funny to see them in these roles. Don't get me wrong it's nowhere near my favorite comedy, but I wasn't disappointed by it at all.

Chris Tucker was hilarious in The Fifth Element but mostly Leeloo was freaking hot. That movie is a sci-fi classic mostly because of her.

Some movies that left me cold and frustrated:

I Robot - I had hopes for this one but felt it pissed on Asimov. Well, it contained robots so I suppose it bears at least some resemblance to the source material in the way that the hill in my neighborhood resembles Mount Everest. Asimov remains fertile ground for some inspired director, but this was taking a generic sci-fi movie and slapping Asimov's name on it.

Interview With the Vampire - A cast that has been very good in other movies had me excited but they missed the mark in this one. Could have been a big-time franchise if done correctly.

I Am Legend - Totally, totally missed the point of the novella. How do you take something that sets up to a punch line and then miss the punch line? Went in and took a dissappointing rewrite into the finale which pissed on the source material (Will Smith - do you read the source material before pushing for a Will Smith star vehicle?).

Wild Wild West - What a mess. Can't say I had sky high expectations but Kenneth Branaugh, Selma Hayek, the very likeable Kevin Kline, and Will Smith had the core for a good movie. Too bad everyone mailed this in.

Matrix Revolutions - Agree on this one. Loved the first two and this just sucked. Stripping away the revelation of the Matrix from the sequel was a significant (but inevitable) step down in the second one but the third was stupid, dull and cliche. Just a total fail. Watched them all again recently and it just reinforced how bad the third one is compared to the other two.

The biggest ones by far though:

The Star Wars Prequels - Lucas rekindling the Star Wars saga? How could you get too much more exciting than that? Casting looked amazing - Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Samuel Jackson... John Williams was returning with a new score including a rousing theme that stoked the fires of hype even higher... And then...thud. The biggest reminders in movie history that script and chemistry matter. Three duds delivered that stained the impeccable legacy of the first three films. These aren't unwatchable but to call them anything other than a grand disappointment is too kind given the rightful expectations. We expected better than what we got and it even inspired stupid changes from Lucas trying to rewrite moments of the original series (putting the "new" Anakin into the end of Jedi, for example). Hayden Christiansen is pretty much the microcosm of the failures of these movies.

Star Wars prequels yeah. How'd i miss that. Well i only saw the first one but it was bad enough to keep me from the rest. Good call.

Independence Day? That's one of the greatest corny movies of all time. Think how many it has inspired.

And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!

[crowd cheers]
