5 1st round draft picks over the next 2 years equals a lot of young talent to go along with our young vets.  Millsap was too old and expensive

And if those 1st round picks aren't right outside of the lottery or in the lottery, most of those players will be marginal role players at best.  The Hawks better ALWAYS pick the best player available, if they're counting on those late 1st round draft picks.

So all starters and significant role players come from the top 14 picks?

Ever heard of bundling 19th and 21st into a 12th lottery pick player who balled out in his very 1st rookie playoffs?

Of the 24 players selected to last years all star team...Guess how many were selected outside the top 14....If you guest 9, You would be correct!  That's over 37%! I think there are a few more quality role players in the NBA that were drafted outside the top 14 than you think.

No . . . but only about 15 of those guys in a draft turn out to be decent players.   The Hawks better guess right on the majority of the picks.  I was actually going to do a big topic on this a few weeks ago, and even have data I collected in an Excel program.  This is what happens when you have too much time on your hands in the hotel, on a work trip.

BLACK - Already in Hall of Fame

GREEN - Surely a lock to get into the Hall of Fame

RED - Future possibility for Hall of fame.

In every draft . . .

On average, you'll get 1 Hall of Famer in every draft.

4 of those guys will average 15 ppg for their career . . . ( star/all-star talents to hall of fame )

12 of them will average 10 ppg for their career  . . . ( these are your starters/significant role players to hall of famers )

19 guys will play at least 10 years in the NBA.

29 will make it 5 years

49 will play in the NBA, whether they become Hall of Famers or play 1 minute total.

9 will not play in the league

Why do y'all continue to think that its a guessing game and the pickers( GM/Coach) don't matter?

I think the NBA i changing so historical data may not be relevant today.  Scoring isn't the only measure of success anymore.  More athletes are attracted to the sport now than before because of the money.  Also what make it even more difficult for the less talented GMs/head Coach to draft well is that they now have to project because the players are so young and under developed now entering the draft.  Of course the dumb GM's give p 2 1st round pick to draft a Doug McDermitt with a top 10 pick..Whereas a smart Gm/Coach steals a Leonard with the 15th pick.
