High5
It's impossible to predict becoming contenders at this point, but we could easily get back to being a mediocre playoff team in the East in a few years if we want. (for those people panicked about us blowing up last year's squad) Hopefully we'll be able to surpass that with some real talent, though. Collins looks to be a great first step.

Do you really believe that?? Half of the League doesn't make the playoffs. 1. Brooklyn2. Los Angeles Lakers3. Philadelphia (from Sacramento)4. Phoenix 5. Sacramento (from Philadelphia)6. Orlando 7. Minnesota 8. New York 9. Dallas 10. Sacramento (From New Orleans)11. Charlotte 12. Detroit 13. Denver 14. Miami Check out these teams. Many of these teams have 1 star... some even two. Yet.. No playoffs. Many of these teams have great coaches. Yet. No playoffs. It's not that easy. Before this stint, we had 10 years of no playoffs. I think the problem is easy to see. It is that we began to believe that getting to the playoffs is easy. Ask Detroit and Charlotte How Easy it is.

Detroit and Charlotte both made the playoffs a year ago. Charlotte will make it this year barring injury. And I said the East, not the West. Orlando, New York, Brooklyn, and Philly are the teams exiled from the postseason currently and it's very clear why. Schlenk just has to be good at his job. If he's not then it doesn't matter if we're tanking or competing.

We had 10 years before this last 10 years when it was supposed to be easy to get back. Longtime Hawks fans should know that the playoffs are not guaranteed. We once had a GM who felt so good about the team he put together that he GUARANTEED that we would make the playoffs. Quote TLANTA -- Pete Babcock was fired as general manager of the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday, with eight games left in the team's fourth straight losing season. Babcock The Hawks never advanced past the second of the playoffs and won just one Central Division title during Babcock's 13 years at the helm. "It's time to try a new plan," team president Stan Kasten said. "It's time to try something else." Billy Knight, the former GM of the Vancouver-now-Memphis Grizzlies, was named Babcock's interim successor and will be considered for the job on a permanent basis, Kasten said. Before this season, coach Lon Kruger guaranteed the Hawks would return to the playoffs. Instead, Atlanta is 29-45, and Kruger was fired in December. The Hawks are virtually eliminated from the Eastern Conference race, trailing Milwaukee by 6½ games for the final playoff spot before the Bucks played Wednesday night. By not making the playoffs, the Hawks -- who pledged a postseason guarantee at the beginning of the season -- will be rebating each season ticket holder $125 per seat. The team, part of AOL Time Warner's sports properties that are currently on the market, reportedly will give back about $500,000 to 4,000 season ticket holders. In 3 years, if Schlenk does his job well, yes, we'll easily be in position to make it back to the playoffs. We could even make it back earlier than that in the East. The teams that get stuck are known for making bad moves.
