We used high draft picks on guys like Hunter, Okongwu, and Cam. Traded future draft picks for Murray. Spent heavy on Collins, Hunter, and Capela. Everyone went nuts over not using the MLE because that was the ONLY option we had to get better. Every other card was played. It would need to have been a killer MLE signing to justify being the ninth luxury tax team in the league. Our current FO is not that great AND they are trying to patch a ship that is sinking. I maintain that our current front office is good but is hampered by ownership who wants to interject their desires into the equation. Our previous GM wasn't that good though at team building, and we are paying for mistakes he made.

Tony and Nicky aren't firing themselves so they might as well be lumped in as part of any front office conversation. Kyle Korver gets a lot of respect, but not sure what tangible actions Landry and Kyle have taken that gives them a good reputation as a FO. Quin? He has apprenticed in the best front office in all of basketball in San Antonio. He's very very intelligent, and the moves that he has made given the constraints he has on him with the directive to avoid the tax have been very good moves. The moves that Landry has made without Schlenk being around: Traded for Saddiq Bey. While Bey has had to fill a bigger role than he should be filling, this was a good trade. They didn't give up much at all to get him, and he's a good fit alongside Trae and in Quin's system because he either drives and attacks the basket or he shoots from deep. He's a rotational player that is good. Hired Quin Snyder as head coach. He got the absolute best coach that was available and got him to come in mid-season. Fantastic hire! Bogdanovich extension. This is a very good deal for the Hawks, and Bogi is another guy that fits Quin's style. Murray extension. Despite the ill fit with Trae, Murray's extension is very much below market for a player of his caliber. This is a very good deal that should be very attractive on the trade market if they decide to move him, but it's also a good deal if they choose to move on from Trae and keep Dejounte. Okongwu extension. Another team friendly deal for a player who has the ability to be a top 10 center in the NBA.

It would need to have been a killer MLE signing to justify being the ninth luxury tax team in the league. Our current FO is not that great AND they are trying to patch a ship that is sinking. Bear in mind that we could have used most of our MLE and NOT been a luxury tax team. We had significant room to play with especially if you remove a salary from the roster (i.e., you use the MLE instead of signing Wesley Matthews so you have the cap room we had all year plus the cap space that WM took up and you combine those to sign someone for up to $10.7M + the cap space from not adding WM or a bit over $12M in space where you still avoid the tax). By the end of the year we were simultaneously overplaying vets to try to make the playoffs and pretending like refusing to have Vit playoff eligible was some mastermind cap move instead of what it obviously was: tanking to keep ourselves in the lottery. Definitely doesn't inspire confidence. (I'm just relieved no one got hurt down the stretch with Bogi playing almost 35 mpg and DJM frequently exceeding 40 mpg for much of March and April).
