Monta or Carroll? Thoughts..

It's a hard choice.  Monta would definitely be the man down the stretch but his defense pails in comparison to DMC's.  What's more is that DMC did show that he's a capable of scoring in both the Nets and the Wizard's series this offseason.  However, I would want DMC back for about 10 or 11 per.

Monta? You guys are off the ole rocker.

What is it in the game of a chucker like Monta that makes you guys think he will make the team better? So some of you say he can score? So Can Jamaal Crawford and Flip Murray but they played where they should , off the bench

Some people never change. I'm not getting the whole urge to make major lateral changes to the most successful team in Hawks history. I also dont see the benefit of swapping out our only natural SF for an undersized SG when we are so thin at SF.

We need depth at SF since lebron, George and Melo will likely all be in the playoffs next season.

He makes the team better because Carroll's D can be replace..We all love Carroll but we can't let our love make us insane 15 million could net us Gerald Green and Ellis..

Ew, now you're adding Green on top of Ellis?  I agree they have skill sets that could help us but I don't know if one offseason would be enough to get them bought in and assimilated into what we'd need them to be on the court.

I agree though that $15mil is too rich for DMC.  I don't think he'll end up getting that though.

I still think we should keep an eye on MIL (Middleton).  That trade yesterday allegedly was to free up capspace to go after BLopez or Chandler.  Will they be able to match a robust offer for Middleton too?

Yeah many will disagree with you on this but the fact that bud and ferry had interest in this guy just 2 years ago I would say Ellis may be a real legit target just like Monroe but at the right price.

Ellis does have a bad reputation as far as chunking up shots and what not but he has drastically improved these past two years and could have easily made the all star game as a reserve. Plus I give him a lot of credit with fitting in with Dirk...those two played great together these past two years.

As far as comparing Ellis to demarre I mean it's a toss up but we have to look at it like this. We all know Ellis is a far better offensive player who's actually been efficient these past two years and we all know DMC has been a journey man throughout his whole career until he landed in the ATL and became a legit 3&D player not to mention one of the better ones at that and he's millions times better than Ellis on defense.

But now you must ask yourself this? Doing what each player does best....who provides more impact?

Can we honestly say DMC's good defense and good 3 ball shooting creates more impact than Ellis's scoring ability?....News flash DMC isn't the kind of lock down defender Tony Allen is so I would honestly say Ellis is the more impactful player by far especially when he gets going with his scoring. Though defense would drop off in a major way without Carroll we can patch it up with thabo starting and get another veteran defense minded SF like Dhantay jones or mickel pietrus as defense guy when needed but we could have Bazemore as the primary backup SF (he did a good job playing it when he had to this season)

I really like the idea of getting Ellis cause I know he will listen to bud, be more team oriented and leave it all on the court! Plus he fixes a scoring problem that we do have and as long as he comes to play along with this lineup:

Pg-Teague

Sg-Monte Ellis

Sf-Thabo

Pf-Sap

C-Horford

Bench

Pg-Dennis

Sg-Bazemore (defense specialist aka buds new 3&D guy after training camp)

Sf-Korver (introducing the 2015-2016 sixth man of the year)

Pf-Moose

C- Big Edy or Koufus (or another free agent legit big that can make impact on defense and rebounds....I would even take Samuel dalembert just to see if he has something left in the tank)

Ellis fills a need like it or not...There you have it!

-Stagnant offense Every blue moon...give it to Monte, Teague, or Sap.

-too many inside shots...throw in dalembert or koufus or whatever free agent big next to sap or horford and try to neutralize it.

-bench was too weak in scoring last year....now you have korver a huge potential sixth man, another year of development for Dennis & Bazemore, and moose getting a lot more minutes

-passive Teague out of no where.... heeerrrrreesss Monte and throw in Dennis if it all goes to hell

-need defense on the perimeter?....take out Ellis and throw in Bazemore along with Teague and Thabo (not too bad of a lineup to go to at all)...if it starts to get terribly bad sit Teague and put Dennis in.

-need more penetration in the lane?....Teague & Ellis combo cannot be any better for this need!

Shit I would pay Ellis a 20point scorer 12 million and have no problem with it. We can find another defense guy next year.

Let's look at the impact. The last 3 years Monta's teams have averaged 1 point worse per 100 possessions when he is on the floor than they are when he is off it:

Net Points Per 100 Possessions

2012-13 +3.7

2014-15 +1.0

2013-14 -7.6

DMC's teams have averaged 5.2 points better with him on the floor than when he is off it:

2013-14 +10.6

2012-13 +5.2

2014-15 -.1

By that simple measure, DMC has had a much bigger impact.

I like the idea of keeping the core in tact but at a price..If some team is truly hell bent at stealing away an Atlanta Hawk player and are willing to significantly over spend then we got to reshuffle the Cards..its just business...I think if Rick Carlisle can utilize Monta effectively I think that coach Bud can do the same.. And what do we do vs lebron, George and Melo in the playoffs?

I think its more likely that dmc resigns with us for 10 mil than some team offering him 15 and stealing him away. I do agree that he can kick rocks if someone offers him that and he wants it.

Aminu/G. Green are cheaper alternatives and if it comes at a tag of 10 mil then my preference is J.Green..Anything over 8 Carroll kick rocks..8mil in the A is the same as 10 mil in LA or NY..

Replacing carroll with Gerald green would be a HUGE mistake. Im not buying the love for green at all.

We just had a great season and you all keep throwing out wild scenarios that will immediately make us a worse team. I dont understand it.

This isnt nba2k or fantasy basketball. This is the NBA and continuity is huge. Replacing carroll for some scrub like gerald green over two million will not keep you on the right track.

I always hated that guy for holding Steph back, attribute his good play in Dallas mostly to Carlisle and a fast-paced offense. I was very upset he and Jennings got a hard look from us a couple years ago. He simply isn't intelligent or defensive-minded enough for championship ball.

Defense and rebounding was our problem but yeah sign Monta in lieu of DMC?????? An alreasy Undersized front court paired with an undersized backcourt. Smh.

Last year Monta shot .285 from 3pt range (.314 career) and grabbed 2.4 (!) rebounds. I love Monta Ellis but he is best suited for a dynamic 6th man role, which I doubt he would take.

Lol..what people fail to realize is we wouldn't be getting Ellis to play Small Forward.. He would be brought in to upgrade the SG position, Sefalosha, Free Agent or Rookie would be Carroll's replacement..Ellis comparison should be made with Korver... Edited by LastDon
