I am not sure that beats out what LA can offer. Austin Rivers and a 2021 protected 1st might be more appealing

But it's more than just Rivers and a 2021 protected 1st going to NY.  LA also has to send out either Reddick or Crawford and NY doesn't want either (Reddick FA, Jamal - too much money owed for his age).

That LAC pick would be 4 years away. The Brooklyn 2nd, Miami 2nd in 2017 and Cavs lottery protected, Minny 1st protected 2018, Cavs 1st protected  has more value than a 2021 pick.

I never understood the expiring contract thing being a positive?

Only if you are looking to cut salary.

Last week NBARadio folks were saying LAC is in running for Gallinari.  May have moved on from sMelo.  Could be posturing.

Right, but the original team is on the hook for anything or does the new team assume the contract?  In the NFL the old adage is you trade for the contract and the player comes with.

It's a lot cheaper for them then Melo. It would only cost them Jamal and picks. Not Austin and others.

Two ways to look at the money saving with our guys.  The original team is not on the hook after the trade for the player they traded (only for the player they receive).

Save Cash This Year:  The idea is if you are trying to save money this year and you trade someone making $10M for Splitter then you avoid the remaining cash for this year and don't have to pay Splitter because insurance covers almost everything there but Splitter does count to meet the salary floor.

Clear Cap Room In Future Years:  For future years, the expiring contract clears cap room if you are dealing someone you don't want who is on a multi-year deal.  Trading Bazemore for a $16M expiring contract, for example, saves Atlanta no money this year but you don't have to pay Bazemore next year so that is real value.

A decade ago under different CBA rules, expiring contracts were huge value.  Changes to the CBA have left expiring deals still of value but no longer of the same value they used to be.

Cap still matters to teams completely rebuilding.

There are not nearly as many teams that need to acquire an expiring contract in order to get the cap room they need today.  The lack of demand compared to the NBA during prior CBAs means the expiring contracts have less value today than they used to.

Carmelo Anthony is the only player who would change our ceiling due to our ability to use him on offense as a SF and a #1 option and use him at PF on defense or v. The weaker offensive player with Thabo.

All in all. We need Melo. I looked at everyone else that's available and they cost too much for what we need and have to offer.

Like we need a hole in the head.

So a free 3 month subscription with the purchase of your new Prius?

I would've totally gone with 'used Smartcar' instead of Prius

What we're rolling out as a "small forward" is akin to taking dirt clods to a machine gun fight.

Add one of Minny's or Cleveland's pick. This is Melo we are talking about here. If we can get a Wes Matthew type we are a contender.

PG-Dennis

SG-Wes Matthews/Timmy Jr.

SF-Melo

PF-Sap

C-Dwight

Teams like Pistons, Bucks, HorCats, Portland that are already in cap hell for next season and going nowhere this season are the teams to Target with expiring contracts.

Agreed.  The Pistons are the only one that might make a big swing, though, IMO (and you'd need to give more than just expiring there).  The others are more likely to ditch role players or heavily protected picks for your expiring contract.  That has value just not what some people think of.
