This is the trade that brought an All-Star backcourt to Brooklyn. Nets General Manager Billy King's bold stroke -- agreed to in principle during the first weekend of free agency -- not only pulled six-time All-Star Joe Johnson into the fold, but also provided the main reason Deron Williams decided to re-sign rather than bolt for Dallas.

King will send the Hawks Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, Jordan Williams and Deshawn Stevenson -- along with Houston's lottery-protected 2013 first-round pick -- to slot Johnson next to Williams. The dynamic pairing should present efficient offensive firepower, while alleviating the stress on each player to produce individually. The threat of each complicates defense on the other.

"We are very pleased to add a perennial All-Star caliber player like Joe Johnson to our roster," said King. "Joe is considered one of the premier guards in the NBA, and his skill and talent level will have a very positive impact on our team."

Though Atlanta's reliance on Johnson's elite one-on-one scoring ability earned him the nickname "ISO-Joe," some prominent NBA analysts believe he can complement Williams' skill set. Grantland's Sebastian Pruiti points out Johnson's 1.91 points per possession on spot-up attempts ranked in the league's 94th percentile; Williams' penchant for passing and ability to play off the ball should offer Johnson open looks and room he wasn't regularly getting in Atlanta.

Johnson has made six straight All-Star Games and seven straight postseason appearances, averaging 17.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.0 steals while shooting .444 from the field (.368 3P%) in 11 seasons. He has averaged 20-plus points five times, with a high of 25.0 in 2006-07, and made the All-NBA 3rd Team in 2009-10.

SALT LAKE CITY (July 11, 2012) – Utah Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor announced today that the team has acquired forward Marvin Williams from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for guard Devin Harris, pending the outcome of physicals.

Williams (6-9, 245, North Carolina) is entering his eighth NBA season and has played in 487 career games (379 starts), all with Atlanta, owning career averages of 11.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 30.4 minutes. He helped the Hawks advance to the playoffs for the last five seasons, appearing in 42 playoff games (27 starts), after the franchise had failed to make the postseason the previous eight years. Williams saw action in 57 games (37 starts) for the Hawks in 2011-12, averaging 10.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 26.3 minutes while shooting a career-high .389 (58-149) from three-point range. He averaged double-figure scoring for the sixth straight season, posting 32 games with 10-plus points including 20-plus twice, and registered two double-doubles.

Originally selected by the Hawks in the first-round (second overall) of the 2005 NBA Draft, Williams was selected to the NBA’s 2006 All-Rookie Second Team. He was also a two-time recipient (2008, 2011) of the Hawks’ Jason Collier Memorial Trophy for his work as a community ambassador.

Prior to the NBA, the 26-year-old Bremerton, Wash., native played one season at the University of North Carolina (2004-05), where he was a member of the Tar Heels’ 2005 NCAA Championship team. Williams’ tip-in with 1:26 remaining in the 2005 NCAA title game vs. Illinois broke a 70-70 tie, propelling UNC to a 75-70 victory. He earned ACC Rookie of the Year honors and was a unanimous selection to the ACC All-Freshman Team in his lone college season.

Our spin: http://www.nba.com/hawks/news/two-major-transactions-significantly-reshape-hawks-future

Atlanta Hawks President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Danny Ferry today announced the team has traded Joe Johnson to the Brooklyn Nets for five players, a first- and second-round pick and other draft considerations, and also acquired Devin Harris from the Utah Jazz for Marvin Williams. In return for Johnson, the Hawks get guards Anthony Morrow, Jordan Farmar and DeShawn Stevenson, and forwards Johan Petro and Jordan Williams. The two picks are Houston’s 2013 first-round pick and the Nets’ second-round pick in 2017. “The Hawks want to thank Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams for their contributions on the court and in the community,” said Ferry. “We felt with the team that we had, we were probably going to maintain the status quo and not be able to reach a championship level. We now have the opportunity to work within the new CBA in a better way that will allow us to move forward and be opportunistic in the future as we work to build a sustainable championship level team.” Morrow returns to the Atlanta area after playing his collegiate ball at Georgia Tech. Undrafted in 2008, the 6-5 guard was signed as a free agent by the Golden State Warriors where he spent two seasons, before he was traded to the Nets for a future second-round pick in July 2010. In four years as a pro, Morrow has averaged 12.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 256 career games. Considered one of the league’s best pure shooters, he has made 45.1% of his field goal attempts, 42.6% of his three-pointers and 89.7% of his free throws. On February 3 of this past season, he tallied a career-high 42 points vs. Minnesota. A first-round selection of the Lakers in 2006, Farmar was the 26th overall pick and played four seasons in Los Angeles, winning two NBA championships with his hometown team in his final two years with the club (’08-’09 and ’09-’10) and recording 6.9 points and 2.1 assists over his LA career. During the summer of 2010 (July 14), he agreed to a free agent contract with the Nets and following two seasons in New Jersey, he finished with 9.9 points and 4.4 assists. He brings career marks of 7.7 ppg and 2.8 apg after 413 games to Atlanta, having made .427 FG%, .367 3FG% and .728 FT%. The 6-2 guard played collegiately at UCLA. Stevenson recently concluded his 12th season in the NBA and he has averaged 7.4 points and 2.2 rebounds in 768 games. A member of the NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks in 2011, the 6-5 guard broke into the league as the 23rd overall selection by the Utah Jazz in 2000. After three-plus years in Salt Lake City, Stevenson was traded to Orlando and spent a little more than two seasons (2003-06) with the Magic before signing a contract with the Washington Wizards in the summer of ’06. Traded to the Mavericks in February 2010, his defense on LeBron James in the Finals was considered a big part of Dallas’ success as the franchise captured its first title. Following that season, he signed a free agent contract with the Nets and played in 59 games (2.9 ppg and 2.0 rpg in 18 minutes per contest). Picked 25th overall by the Seattle Sonics in the 2005 Draft, Petro is a 7-0 center who hails from Paris, France and he is a frequent member of the French national basketball team. Having played for three teams in his NBA career (Seattle/Oklahoma City, Denver and New Jersey), he has appeared in 442 career games and recorded 4.7 points and 3.9 rebounds (.463 FG%, .669 FT%). Williams’ rookie year with the Nets saw the 6-10 forward/center play in 43 contests and post averages of 4.6 points and 3.6 rebounds (.507 FG%, .652 FT%). He left the University of Maryland after two seasons with the Terrapins and he was selected by New Jersey with the 36th pick in the 2011 Draft. An eight-year veteran, Harris’ tenure in Utah consisted of 80 games after he was traded by the Nets (along with Derrick Favors and other considerations) on February 23, 2011. He helped lead the Jazz to the first round of the playoffs before they were eliminated in four games by Dallas. In 63 games this year, Harris tallied 11.3 points and 5.0 assists, and made 44.5% of his FG attempts while shooting 75 percent from the free throw line. Selected as a reserve on the Eastern Conference’s All-Star team in 2009, Atlanta will be Harris’ fourth team since coming into the NBA in 2004. Picked fifth overall by Washington, he was traded to Dallas on draft night and played three and a half seasons for the Mavericks before he was traded to New Jersey on February 19, 2008. In three-plus seasons with the Nets, Harris’ career numbers continued to improve, topped by a personal-best 21.3 ppg average in 2008-09. It was the fifth straight season in which his scoring totals increased, to go along with career highs in rebounds (3.3 rpg) and steals (1.6 spg). Harris brings career averages of 13.1 points, 5.0 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals to Atlanta, and he has connected on .441 FG%, .315 3FG% and 80.1 percent of his FTs.

The second round pick is from Brooklyn in 2017 and this in addition to the 1st we are getting from Houston that is lottery protected.

Oh I see, thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately, unless the Rockets land Dwight, they don't look to be playoff bound anytime soon. Gonna have to keep that pick on ice for a while.
