Dallas has recently proven the idea that "you can't get steadily worse over time" is 100% wrong (like it or not, absolutely nothing pointed to them "tanking" before 16/17) and my feeling is Memphis is going to prove the same thing pretty soon. If you don't plan, starting years in advance, you are going to get steadily worse in sports no matter what.

By your allegations, the only good organization in the NBA is the San Antonio Spurs.

Frankly, nothing pointed to them tanking last year.  They signed Barnes for $23M and traded for Nerlens Noel.  The season before they signed Wesley Matthews to a massive FA deal as well.

I meant before 16/17 happened, in the offseason preceding it.

There is no perfect world where everyone is competitive as it doesn't happen.

Lmao maybe the visual will help him realize we would have had one of the most expensive payrolls in the NBA had we brought everyone back.

I'm not being snarky.  Legit interested for those who didn't want us to rebuild this season where they would go with this roster.

As much as it would make me want to puke based on the impact it would have on large versus small markets, I might actually prefer the "no-draft, everyone is a FA model" over a totally random draft.  The big markets will always have some big advantages but the volatility of getting stars on rookie deals could make that even worse.  At least if you do some things like eliminate max salaries, keep a salary cap, and make everyone a free agent you should see some flattening of the elite talent around the league.  Adding Ben Simmons to GS for the next several years for less than MLE money, for example, could lead to just ridiculous results if nothing else about the current system were to change.

If a hard cap is imposed, with no "exceptions", at least every team would stand a chance at getting good players.

Really points out the stupidity in offering the contracts to Muscala and Ilyasova then, doesn't it?

I really didn't mind resigning Muscala if we are trying to rebuild since he has been with the team so long simmilar to Nick Collison in OKC. Only issue I had with Illyasova is you had the bird no trade clause so we were unable to deal him at the deadline.

Depends on your goal.  You are already over the cap before you sign the two of them and you have rights to allow you to resign them without using your exceptions so if you plan to compete that means you can add them to the team and preserve your exceptions whereas if you don't resign them you have to fill out the rest of the roster with minimum salaries and exceptions.  Probably makes sense to resign them if you want to win.

As for us this season?  I think we had visions of flipping Ilya for assets and keeping Moose long-term.

You mean like Chillz, Smoove, Marvin, Shelden, Horford, and Acie?

So what would you have done to make us a playoff team this year because we bring everyone back in the east we are about 10th way over the cap imo.

And this is a great example of a “middle build” gone horribly wrong.  Their saving grace is that it went so bad they may get a top-3 Pick from it.  Dallas had a team without much surplus value and added expensive liabilities to that team.  That doesn’t make you a contender, it makes your roster expensive and inflexible.

yes 107 million on 11 players even if we sign vets on minimums would put us around 115 million 26 million over the cap. Even with our roster last year and making the playoffs the hawks lost money so why pay 26 million over the cap when the team even lost money last season. http://www.businessinsider.com/nba-teams-losing-money-revenue-sharing-2017-9 and if you want to compete you needed Hardaway Jr back so at that 115 number maybe we are the 8th seed but more likely around 10th

Different owner. Different GM. Different coach. Different approach. Different results...

I'll get to the roster in a while, but Paul Millsap is currently a +12 in a little over 5 minutes tonight.  It is a joy to watch him play basketball.  It sure would have been nice to have John Collins learn and develop his game behind Paul.

You just realize there was no way to get this team to a top 6 seed in the east this year even spending crazy amounts of money. The Hawks LOST money last year.
