The owner writes the checks.  We all depend on our staff but ultimately we write the check

That's not the question though.  And, frankly, that the attitude that propels bad owners to keep fielding bad teams.

Yeah, the owner writes the checks but he ain't the one scouting dudes in dimly lit gyms.  He's not the one traveling overseas, when no one's watching, to put the work in to tell who's good and who's not.  He's not the one speaking to folks behind the scenes to gain an understanding of which kids are real and which are fake as {insert porn star}'s boobs.

In that realm, to suppose that simply writing the checks makes you an eggspert is to court disaster.

I get it.  If the guy wants to just throw his weight around like that then he needs to understand that's not the model of wining franchises.  But hey, since he writes the checks it's his prerogative to stay in the lottery I guess.

The GM is there to advise.   The owner pulls the trigger.

Why even have a GM? Every owner is going to have opinions on players in the draft. It’s not like they put their egos in check.

I think you are taking this wrong.  You hire, in this case of NBA, a GM.  You spend alot of time together and pick that GMs brain and most of the time you accept his thoughts.   In some cases tho the owner has other parts of the organization that he has to consider what benefits the entire franchise for now and the future.   5 years of empty stands is a problem.  The Hawks have enough problems with attendance as it is.

Only for bad teams.

The owner is not an expert in basketball and doesn’t have the time to do the due diligence.  When the owner decides to make the decisions it invites errors.

Owner should function more like a finance guy on the board of directors for a manufacturing company.  He doesn’t know the business that well and should let the CEO (GM) run it.  When the owner loses faith in the GM he should fire and replace him.  But don’t try to pretend you know the business better than the guys who live it and have the experience and have done the work.

Doing that is how you end up with Dan Snyder.  Hire your RC Buford or Jerry West and let them run the show.

I hear you.  I just have an itchy trigger when it comes to meddlesome owners.

I agree.  History shows some have destroyed franchises.  Wish we still had Ted Turner

I meant to write that as my last sentence on my last post.  One of my biggest regrets is missing Ted give the commencement in Athens 5000 years ago when I graduated.

As for the Jerry West/Buford thing, that is somewhat gleaming the cube as hardly any franchises have a HOF exec making the calls and beyond that drafting is still witchcraft.

I don't believe the pick is JJJ,. Bags. Donc, or TY.  I think they want Bamba.  I think Pierce is his main advocate.

Interesting that this has cross my mind before too

Wouldn’t doubt it. Because we’re not hearing it. By design ?

I hope they come to the understanding that no amount of quarters equal to a dollar in NBA math.

We've had a team of quarter players the last decade.  What's that got us?

There's no amount of likes I can give this post. I have been preaching this since I was a kid. My dad taught this to me. He knows. You either have a star player or you don't. No amount of non star players equals the value of just one star player.

why would you draft Trae Young (which I am totally against) is Dennis is still on the team at the start of the draft. If we draft Young with Dennis still on the roster then we will not get anything worthwhile for Dennis. Man I hope that we are not drafting this guy. You give any average player the green light to shoot all they want to and will produce i.e Allen Iverson. We saw what this kid did against legitimate competition. Big Mistake.

I'm pretty sure we got a lottery pick for Jeff Teague (in his late 20's) with Dennis still on the roster. It's definitely possible to trade a 24 year old Dennis, his off the court issues may make it more difficult but not impossible. I'm fine with us getting Trae.
