I would say Al defends perimeter players better than 99% of NBA big men. Here is the deal. People like who they like and it does not matter if they have ever seen them play a whole game in person or not. Those who love Doncic think he can get better, stronger, and faster; those who love Young pick think he can get better, stronger, and faster. Those who are extremely biased against or for either; only think one of them can do all that. Trying to argue with anyone once they make up their mind about someone being bad or good, is like swimming upstream against a raging current. My point, none of the fans in that category will change their mind one way or the other until it happens. Doesn't change that we have the leverage of having a guy that we would be happy to have and Dallas really wants (number 1 on their big board and he was not making it past Memphis) yet they are able to somehow talk Schlenk down from requesting shedding salary. Not only that, they manage to get protection on the pick, which takes away whatever nuclear upside it has. We should've gotten more from that deal. If Schlenk can get rid of Dennis without taking another Dwight Howard style deal, I'll be stunned and grateful. But it's not looking likely, taking Trae has removed the tiny bit of leverage that we had. Can you name me one reason that Schlenk has shown for me to be optimistic about his trading ability though? I then said that Horford is elite on D and that I didn't expect Spellman to equal that based on what he showed in college (suggesting that anyone showing comparable switching ability to Horford in college plus good 3pt shooting would be a much higher pick). You and then started exchanging posts in which I was arguing that comparing a young rookie to an All-NBA player isn't fair and so you shouldn't expect that from Spellman (i.e., don't set the bar that high). We absolutely don't know how that went. We did, however, see Philly land a very intriguing pick with zero protections on it. We've also seen Boston do better in several deals (obviously the Nyets deal that expired last year and then last year's deal which was not protected if the pick was #1 this year and is only 'protected' if #1 next year).
