Scouting report does says hs can switch on the PnR:

He did it against slower, smaller guards in college but I don't believe he will be able to do it like Horford in the pro's.  I'd love to be wrong on that because if he can stay with guards and wings like Al has over the years that will be a huge boost to our D.  I think if he could do that, though, we wouldn't have been able to get him where we did.  There aren't many people I'd compare to Horford given his size and defensive versatility.

I like the pick. Schlenk has a pretty good eye for talent, if he hires a trade negotiations specialist we may be cooking.

And if Young and next years pick Dallas pick both turn in to a top 25 to 50 player in league, you will be raving about Schlenk. But so long as you think your "if" opinion is correct, he needs help. It is all ifs right now; so why people are so adamant about the if being bad is typical of many long time Hawks fans to be honest.

We have been a lower tier franchise for so long, Ressler should probably just give up and move the team to Las Vegas. I bet their fans would not complain so much about three first round picks in one year.

For those who think Dwight is so valuable and our trade was just a horrible loss: NJ sent two 2nd round picks and Mozgov to Charlotte, just so they could buy him out. Every fan puts to much value on their own players; because you know they are our players  :Baze: :Schroder:

You gotta assume that he will be in better shape a year from now so its unfair to compare him now vs an NBA player who has been on an NBA training regime.

I would say Al defends perimeter players better than 99% of NBA big men.  I'm not saying Spellman can't improve - I'm saying let's not set an unrealistic bar for him.

Who set any bar for him?

He was being described/compared on this thread as a more fluid Al Horford.  I'm just saying to let him find his way without comparing him against a guy who has been All-NBA and All-NBA defense based in large part on his ability to cover and switch on D.

You just said it is unfair to compare them at this stage in their careers.  I am saying the same thing.

I'm excited to get another lottery pick. Doesn't change that we have the leverage of having a guy that we would be happy to have and Dallas really wants (number 1 on their big board and he was not making it past Memphis) yet they are able to somehow talk Schlenk down from requesting shedding salary. Not only that, they manage to get protection on the pick, which takes away whatever nuclear upside it has. We should've gotten more from that deal.

If Schlenk can get rid of Dennis without taking another Dwight Howard style deal, I'll be stunned and grateful. But it's not looking likely, taking Trae has removed the tiny bit of leverage that we had.

Can you name me one reason that Schlenk has shown for me to be optimistic about his trading ability though? We flopped at the trade deadline, Dennis and Baze are still on the team, etc.

Sounds like they were comparing their offensive skills to me not their defensive skill/potential

Doesn't look the team is trying to trade Dennis at all now

Hawks coach says Dennis Schröder on board to be ‘role model’ for Trae Young

My response was that you couldn't compare them on D and the next response was saying that Spellman has good switching ability.  I then said that Horford is elite on D and that I didn't expect Spellman to equal that based on what he showed in college (suggesting that anyone showing comparable switching ability to Horford in college plus good 3pt shooting would be a much higher pick).  You and then started exchanging posts in which I was arguing that comparing a young rookie to an All-NBA player isn't fair and so you shouldn't expect that from Spellman (i.e., don't set the bar that high).

We negotiated all the way up until the last minute and got the player we wanted and a future pick. But you know there were better deals out their just because you say it is so. This is exactly what I mean about the "ifs" that are rampant at this time of the season every year. You don't know squat diddly about what we could have, should have, or would have got. But you do have an opinion. That is about all any of us has. But some of us do not think our opinion is a fact.

Here are three facts we all know:

We could have stayed put and took the player we did not want.

We could have stayed put and took the player we did want.

Instead we traded down, took the player we wanted and acquired a future pick.

"Because you say it is so, it is so." Now go look in the mirror and repeat those words. Try not to crack up laughing.

Instead, the Hawks came away with neither of those things, as Dallas got the number 1 guy on their board. Played. But whatever, it's done now. Schlenk just has to be a better negotiator in the future.

We absolutely don't know how that went.  We did, however, see Philly land a very intriguing pick with zero protections on it.  We've also seen Boston do better in several deals (obviously the Nyets deal that expired last year and then last year's deal which was not protected if the pick was #1 this year and is only 'protected' if #1 next year).  Given that we've seen Schlenk struggle in several series of negotiations, I don't think he is immune from second-guessing here.
