Moderators macdaddy Posted January 8, 2020 Moderators Report Share Posted January 8, 2020 Yeah I don't know. I thought i say where the debt was sold for 10% of what was owed. But $10,000 is 1% of a million. That doesn't make any sense. Maybe he really donated $100k? then it would work.

I hate to be that guy, but it's very disingenuous. I'm not blaming Trae here, but come on, 10k is not 1000k.

The $10k is Trae's part.

The 7 trillion is the end result, 20k is my part.
Premium Member Sothron Posted January 8, 2020 Premium Member Report Share Posted January 8, 2020 My guess is that the article says the non profit buys medical debt for pennies on the dollar and that is how they can eliminate way more in debt through far less received in donations.

Quote RIP Medical is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit started in 2014 by two former debt collectors that uses donated funds to purchase portfolios of bundled medical debt on the secondary debt market for pennies on the dollar.
Popular Post HawkItus
Items in collections can be bought for less than the total debt. I owe 8k to Grady and AHF could buy it for $80. Then he go after me for the full 8k. Trae and RIP purchased ! million worth of medical debt for 10k. They are not pursuing the debt thus saving these people a million dollars worth of debt.
Premium Member Popular Post Sothron Posted January 8, 2020 Premium Member Popular Post Report Share Posted January 8, 2020 I don't want to make this political but I have to say: this is why we need universal health care in our country. The number one reason for bankruptcy for people for many years now in a row is crushing medical debt.

Even with insurance 10k out of pocket out of nowhere is a very high amount of money.

He lost his hearing in one ear and has TBI, but he was blessed and made a full recovery otherwise. My co-workers helped a bunch and the County's crime victims fund pretty much covered the rest. Thanks for asking about his well being. 7

Sadly, too many of us choose not to recognize that it doesn't have to be a political statement for us to acknowledge there's a real problem related to healthcare in this country.

We just got the bill(s) for having a kid and that crap is ridiculous. "Daycare" for like 2 days was 5 figures. 3
Moderators AHF Posted January 8, 2020 Moderators Report Share Posted January 8, 2020 Definitely join Sothron in being thankful for HawkItus's son's recovery. But as a mod I've got to ask people to take the issue of medical care to the politics board before we go off the rails. People have a variety of perspectives on this issue and frequently very strong opinions. Don't want that bleeding into the main board but encourage people to discuss it in the right forum.
