Trae went through the same exact thing. No Cam is a shooter. They just aren’t dropping. He does need to work on some strength specially in his hands though 🖐

It isn’t the same thing at all. Cam was very streaky and inefficient in college. He’s got to work on his shot. He hasn’t earned the label of being a shooter at any level. I do think he can become a shooter though

31.2% from three compared to 32.6% in conference play for both players. Neither shot it lights out and both took insane volume. Cam 10.4 per40 in conf and Trae 11.4 per40 in conf.

It’s not an apples to apples comparison though when Cam had many more open catch and shoot opportunities and saw a much lower level of defensive attention and pressure.

That's a fair statement but both were primary 3pt shooters and shot with high variance. That should account for a lot in these two cases but I agree. He wasn't getting doubled from 3 like Trae

I think Jeff is more down than I or LP is. I think he is a good NBA starting level wing defender and a pretty damn good SG defender. LP is right, the goals is for him to be an elite defender. Hoping that he will be Giannis on defense or Kawhi is kinda out there. Since those two really can defend 4s as well. Reddish is more like Covington and George but not as big or polished defensively.

What the coaching staff has learned about Reddish during the past few months since he was selected No. 10 overall in the draft is that once there’s a fire sparked inside of Reddish, it’s almost like he’s a new person. He needs to be pushed and propelled. “Once he finds that motivation within himself and starts waking up every day and says, ‘I’m an NBA basketball player. I’m Cam Reddish’ — that’s when we might see a difference,” assistant coach Marlon Garnett, who is Reddish’s primary day-to-day coach, told The Athletic after practice Wednesday. “It hasn’t been a challenge, but it’s just a reminder for him.”

Garnett is primarily assigned to Reddish, Trae Young and Tyrone Wallace and is DeAndre’ Bembry’s secondary coach. Garnett is the one who helps those three with their vitamin workouts, is instructing them during warmups prior to the games and breaks down their film work of practices and games.

What the coaches have seen with Reddish on film hasn’t matched what he has shown in practices, and that’s where they feel like the disconnect has been when it comes time to play.

The staff has noticed that Reddish, in practice, has his left foot anchored to the ground, and then he steps and follows through with his right foot in practice. A lot of Reddish’s shot attempts in games come with him hopping into his shot, which is not what he’s practicing, so he’s out of rhythm.

“Just to do that, he’s late reacting, and it’s over,” Pierce said. “It’s a different rhythm. If you shoot with a different rhythm than what you worked on, you’re going to get a different result. It’s studying little things like that. We studied this with De’Andre (Hunter). He’s shot ready, but sometimes (his follow-through is off), and sometimes he’s CJ McCollum, and he holds his follow-through. When you awaken a guy to something they might not even be aware of, and I don’t even think it’s something he’s been aware of. He’s hopping into his 3s, and all he does is work on his left foot down and step, step. These things take time. The readiness before the ball gets there is huge. Vince (Carter) is great at it. De’Andre Hunter is very good at it. Kevin Huerter is not great at it, surprisingly; he just has an easy release. Shot ready is not something (Reddish) is very good at.”

One of the things I talked about this year was Cam missing summer league.  He missed a lot of prep time. The off-season is when most of these guys get with personal coaches and work with them on things like shooting mechanics, feel, offensive sets, timing.  I fully expect that if Cam gets a healthy off-season under his belt that he comes in next season looking like a top 5 pick.
