The 3-point Conundrum

Trae is 7-41 from 3 (17% 🤢🤢) since the calender turned to 2024 [knee contusion to end 2023 (and now last night) and a persistent shoulder 'something' can't be good]. He should sit our tonight's game.

Bogi isn't fearing much better 13-42 - 30%

Bey either, he's  10-31 - 32%

DJ is the only one with efficiency at 12-23 - 52%

The Hawks are shooting 36.4% (171/470) on corner 3s this season. League average is 39.5%. Bey is shooting 27.6% (37/134) on corner 3s. Only 2 other players (Bogi, Murray) have more than 40 attempts. They are at 41.5%.

Trae's last 3 games:  20-31 (64.5%).  Keep it up and he'll be pushing 40% before long.  And it's on high volume as well.  Good stuff.  Wish he'd get his floater going more though.

Also:

  • Trae is 3rd in 3P FGM (151) / Trae is 5th in 3P FGA (394)
  • Bogi is 6th in 3P FGM (147) / Bogi is 4th in 3P FGA (397)

Last year, Trae finished 48th in 3P FGM (154) and 30th in 3P FGA (460)

As a team, Atlanta is 670-1859 (36.0%) this year which is 7th in FGM and 5th in FGA (19th in %) after being 882-2505 last year which ranked 26th in FGM and 28th in FGA (21st in % at 35.2%)

So even though the % hasn't gone up dramatically, just the general philosophy has changed for the better.  Take more make more.  Would be nice for the % to inch closer to 38% rather than 36%.  But I like Quin's overall philosophy.

Going 9-18 over his last 3 games has kept him from falling below 30%. Now sits at 31.6%

Sometimes they go swish!  Sometimes they go clang!

Now, if they could repair their free throw % and their 3 point shooting, we would soon climb up to that elusive .500 mark!!

🥲

This came across my feed today. Not sure why.  It's a little old so I apologize if it's already been posted somewhere, but I hadn't seen it.  Good stuff, hypothetically.  LOL  It's 15 minutes but well worth the watch.

For the season, the Hawks rank:

  • 6th in 3pt FGM at 13.7 per game;
  • 7th in 3pt FGA at 37.6 per game;
  • 17th in 3pt FG% at 36.3%

So they are volume 3pt team with avg efficiency.  The real issue is they combine that with:

  • 28th in 3pt FGM Defense at 13.9 per game;
  • 21st in 3pt FGA Defense at 35.8 per game;
  • 28th in 3pt FG% Defense at 38.4% allowed

So they allow teams to be highly efficient in 3pt shooting.  No bueno.

Compared to years' past, they certainly take more and make more but their efficiency is only marginally better. While defensively, they allow far more makes and takes along with a higher efficiency (last year they ranked 8th in 3pt FGM defense, 16th in FGA defense, and 10th in opponent FG%).

Conundrum indeed.

I'll admit to being critical of Garrison a lot but it's pretty obvious why he is playing.  Now that things have regressed to the mean it exposes that we are a very average 3 point shooting team. These are the top 4 who also happen to be 4 of the best teams in the league

image.png

Boston has 4 guys >40% and 6 guys shooting better than Bogi from 3.

Very average indeed.  If we looked at only the Top 6 Hawks by %, they'd still not rank in the Top 4 at 38.35% (would rank just ahead of Phx for 5th).

We have 3 plays over 40% and they've barely taken 200 shots between them.

OKC has 8 players that have combined for nearly 1,000 attempts.

Bos has 4 players but they've combined for 1,400 attempts

LAC has 4 players for 1,300 attempts

Min has 4 players for 1,100 attempts
