Well let's play out some of these situations...just for the sake of our sanity. Belkin doesn't want to assume all the operating losses that led to the cheap sale price initially and has led to losses since so he sells it off to the Atlanta Spirit owners - at a premium. Same scenario except he buys the team from the Atlanta Spirit owners and sells to Arthur Blank or someone more desirable. Same scenario except he just gets minority stakeholders who buy in on the condition that he doesn't move the teams. He gets hit by a car while walking out of the courthouse... I only dish the picture when he gives up control the team forever. I was going to do it when they finalized the buyout. Now it will stay for as long as necessary. Premium Member Diesel Posted June 9, 2006 Premium Member Report Share Posted June 9, 2006 Fortunately, the team will remain in Atlanta... The same Phil contract that McDavid couldn't undo was the same contract that Atl Spirit took on. Meaning that there's still about 18 years left on the obligation to stay in Atlanta. Who do I thank for that? Bill Campbell or Shirley Franklin?

Leading to a cablemedia blackout where all the Dookie-philes at ESPN explode leaving no one to run the network other than Chris Berman and that intern guy who won the anchor reality TV competition. DrReality
I have a question of what Belkin's ultimate motives are. I think it was obvious that he wanted to rub the other owner's noese in it and I think he wanted to make a killing financially. And he has done both. But does he want to keep the team in light of how Stern and the other owners will greet him. He may be a big man in most circles, but in that circle he will be a lepper. So question is, will he use his position to sell the team back to the other owners at a huge profit or to someone else for that matter. He's had his legal, moral and financial victories. Now will he keep the team?

Well let's play out some of these situations...just for the sake of our sanity. 1. The ATL Spirit group file an appeal. this thing gets tied up for another year. 2. Stern (the control freak) and the NBA file a temporary restraining order seeking an injunction from another court. this will be the most likely scenario in my opinion. the team will temporarily operate as normal. 3. Belkin buys out the other owners. a. JJ has 4 or 5 years left on his deal. he ain't going anywhere. b. Chillz, Smoove, and Marvin were all drafted while Belkin had part control of the club. c. Zaza wasn't but his contract is a bargain. d. Belkin was accused of wanting to maintain a low payroll, however do we know the entire story? e. Billy Knight is fired immediately. in fact there will probably be a police escort for him on his way out of the building. f. Mike Woodson is gone also because the new GM will want their man. has Woody really impressed anyone here the past couple of years? in short it's not the end of the world. btw my belief is there is only a 25% chance Belkin has anything to do with this team a year from now. also there will be a 0% chance he'll get anywhere near an NBA team again. Stern is the wildcard here.

No - he said he was inclined to rule against Belkin at that point. He probably hadn't reviewed the nuts and bolts of the contract and legal authority and when he did he found that Belkin was technically correct even though it seemed bizarre - just like with the issue of whether he got to select the second person to assess the value of the franchise. I just don't get why they ever gave him the right to buy them out under any circumstances.
