2012 Hawksquawk Summer Dynasty Draft

Marcus Camby One of the best big man in the NBA still at his age. Provides rebounds, leadership, and defense. Jay Bird has been pm'ed

Damn I really wanted him! I was actually going to take him with my last pick but then the Brandon Roy news broke and I had to take him while hoping Camby would slide to me.

Given the lack of quality shooting guards, the U-Niques are going to double down on youth and potential and the take the #4 pick in the 2012 draft:

Dion Waiters

Waiters is a future impact defender and has serious potential taking the ball to the hole. He is in a position where he can focus on developing on our roster and he should be ready to come on the floor and play impact defense in short shifts right away:

On the offensive end, Waiters has made a real impact this season by being more opportunistic pushing the ball and getting out on the break, as he sees over 28% of his possessions in transition according to Synergy, which is especially impressive given Syracuse's just 178th ranked tempo according to Kenpom.com.

A physically gifted player with an excellent frame and terrific instincts, Waiters' aggressive defense definitely fuels this area of his game by creating opportunities, but he does a very good job keeping his head up and attacking when his team has a numbers advantage. He's very crafty with the ball in his hands and does a good job of using his shiftiness going to the basket, switching the ball between hands and showing a very good feel for weaving through defenses. While not exceptionally quick or fast, Waiters has perhaps helped himself most here by showing a good commitment to using his well-built frame to go hard to the basket, frequently finishing with power and playing with a real mean streak on the break.

[Waiters has] been one of Syracuse's most effective and disruptive defenders this season, as chronicled in great depth bySI's Luke Winn.

Waiters is extremely aggressive on this end of the floor, extending Syracuse's zone well beyond the college three-point line, being constantly in motion, and frequently picking off balls in the passing lanes to fuel his own transition game. He does a great job jumping out to contest shots and shows very good hustle and focus overall. Waiters also does a good job using his strength to get over picks on pick-and-rolls, and works hard to stay in front of his man on the rare chance he sees a true isolation in Jim Boeheim's zone, but as always with Syracuse players, it's tough to get a perfect handle on this aspect of his game from a scouting perspective.

With that said, considering his physical attributes and aggressiveness, it's not difficult to see him being capable of guarding both guard positions in the NBA, which should give his team plenty of versatility to work with.

Looking forward, Waiters brings an interesting package of skills to the table along with a good amount of untapped potential. His style of play should seemingly translate well in a combo guard role off the bench as a sparkplug transition and pick and roll scorer who can defend multiple positions, which every NBA team seems to have at least one of these days.

    [*]Powerful drivers, overpowers the competition

    [*]Relentlessly attacks the rim

    [*]Plays with confidence

    [*]Very good ball handler

    [*]Sneaky athlete

[*]Has some potential to play point guard

Negatives

    [*]Undersized for his position

ESPN

http://insider.espn.go.com/nbadraft/results/players/_/id/19577/dion-waiters

We don't expect big things from Waiters this season other than to come in and give us energy in some limited minutes. We do, however, expect big things in the future for a guy who will be able to play D, score the ball, and give you minutes at both the 1 and 2 positions. While most of the guys we were looking at are largely "replacement value" players given the other guys who will be free agents, we are excited about Waiter's potential for the future for the U-Niques.

PG: Tony Parker / Eric Bledsoe / Rodney Stuckey

SG: Kevin Martin / Bradley Beal / Rodney Stuckey / Dion Waiters

Good catch... I don't think I did added those picks but if I did then my bad!

With the 195th pick in the 2012 HawkSquawk Summer Dynasty Draft, The JaybirdHawk Hustlers select:

DeJuan Blair, F - 6’-7”, 270lbs

He has no ACL's but he still rebounds and scores without plays being called for him. Averaged 9.5ppg and 5.5rbg in 21 minutes.

Great pick!

Man I think that Waiters is going to be an enormous bust... but I hope I'm wrong. I've just seen him be too inconsistent to see him get drafted 4th by the Cavs.

Southern Bred select......

Fab Melo

Young big who will learn from the vet in front of him and could provide starting material for the future.

Diesel is PM'd

You SUCK!

With the 200th pick of the 2012 Hawksquawk Summer Dynasty Draft, PSSSHHHRRR87's Birds of a Feather select:

Anthony Morrow, G/F

One of the newest members of the Atlanta Hawks, Morrow is a very capable scorer and lives through the 3 ball. Has a subpar dribble/drive game, but his jumpshot can be lethal. Plays decent defense and is highly coachable. He will be a perfect man to bring off of the bench for that dire three pointer.

HC - Rick Carlisle

C - Andrew Bogut

PF - David West

SF - Carmelo Anthony

SG - J.R. Smith

PG - Deron Williams

Bench:

PG - Mike Conley

SF - Tayshaun Prince

C - Tyler Zeller

G/F - Demar DeRozan

PF - Channing Frye

PF - Glen Davis

Are you just trying to lure D12 to your team once fantasy land free agency hits? If so, good move.

In the 13th round, with the 201st pick, in the 2012 HawkSquawk Summer Dynasty Draft, The Dolfan Dynasty selects:

John Henson, PF/C - 6'11" 220 lbs

With a 9'4" reach, 7'5" wingspan, 9" hands and nearly 7' tall we're adding a guy who has the chance to be an elite shot blocker and rebounder at the NBA level. We're not expecting anything offensively from John and just want him to come in and give us 100% effort playing D and rebounding and playing for Doc Rivers we are certain that is going to happen! From his NBA.com Draft Profile:

Strengths:

*Length

*Elite athlete

*Great shot blocker

*Great rebounder

*Good defender

*Competes

Weaknesses:

*Perimeter game needs refinement

*Thin frame

*Poor free-throw shooter

NBA projection:

Henson is a probable lottery pick and he’ll have a solid NBA career, because he enters the league with two next-level skills — shot blocking and rebounding. If he wants to add layers to his game and develop a more consistent face-up jumper, he’ll have plenty of time to do so.

2011-12 Season:

Henson was chosen the ACC defensive player of the year, first-team All-ACC and to the league’s all-defensive team after leading the conference in rebounding and blocked shots. He also finished fourth in field-goal percentage.

Key statistics:

13.7 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.3 tpg, 2.9 bpg, 29.1 mpg, .500 FG, .511 FT

Cool statistic:

Henson finished as North Carolina’s all-time leader in blocked shots per game. He finished with 279 in 109 games, an average of 2.56.

Reminds me of:

Derrick McKey

What Insiders Say:

North Carolina coach Roy Williams

"I think he made some jump shots, and yet I think that is fool's gold sometimes. Our chances are better with Reggie [bullock] or Harrison [barnes] shooting, and John [Henson] rebounding, as opposed to the opposite way. John took one down the stretch that I didn't want him to take, but in the second half I thought he was so much more effective offensively than just shooting jump shots. He got involved defensively. He blocked some shots that were huge for us. John is just getting better and better."

What Outsiders Say:

Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg

"The guy has ridiculous length. He's kind of freakish in that he shoots as many shots with his left hand as his right. He has the ability to shoot the ball with range and he affects the game defensively because he protects the front of the rim."

In the 13th round, with the 201st pick, in the 2012 HawkSquawk Summer Dynasty Draft, The Dolfan Dynasty selects: John Henson, PF/C - 6'11" 220 lbs

Good pick. I was thinking between the two of them with my last player pick. I thought both Waiters and Henson have serious upside and some serious development to get there. His thin frame was the reason I passed, but I think this could end up a very good pick. I like the idea of swinging for the fences rather than getting a veteran role player at this point in the draft.

I pretty much had to do that after Camby and Blair went as those 2 were higher on my board of bigs. I don't know a lot about Henson but from watching his highlights and reading about him he seems like the type of guy who can come in and at least be a DeAndre Jordan type of player and that's enough for me off the bench as I have enough scoring. With Waiters he has elite scoring potential but I don't know if he's got the drive to get there. We'll see though!

After the draft is complete, if we wanted to drop a player and add someone who wasn't drafted, is that possible?

We haven't done that in the past and it seems like it would be a bit difficult if more than one owner wanted that player. It might be better to extend it another two rounds and fill out a full 15 man roster if people were interested in that. Edited by AHF

First come first serve buddy! LOL

I'm just thinking that maybe if someone reached for a player and regretted it or had someone suffer a big injury that maybe they could cut that player and pick up a FA?

I'll open it up for other posters to chime in, but I am probably not inclined to do that. We don't do an ongoing fantasy season or anything it is more a draft and then look back a year later so people have to live with their regrets until the next one! There will definitely be plenty of useful players not drafted. If people wanted to do this, I would suggest that they post their final rosters after the last pick is taken and they can drop and add from the FA pool and no one can pick up the player dropped (otherwise this will get very messy where Dolfan drops player X and picks up undrafted FA Y and then AHF picks up player X and drops Player Z then Dolfan decides that it wasn't his final roster after all and picks up Player Z and drops Player A then....).
