Looks like we acquired another diamond in the rough player than fits our system perfectly.

It's funny you put it that way.

  • "Holiday has been a fantastic fit as an off-ball catch-and-shoot specialist. With a 48.15 Open+ Frequency, Holiday leads the team with 1.33 Points per Shot and is top 5 on the team with 0.21 Points per Chance as well.
  • With quick feet and a gigantic 7'1" wingspan, Holiday is also a handful on the defensive end. His 1.08 Deflections per 100 Chances, 0.041 TO per Chance, and 0.81 Passes Denied per 100 Chances all rank 2nd on the team, reflecting his terrific potential as a defensive disruptor."

WOW. On the NBA champs to boot...

"Vantage Stats support these box-score numbers as well, as Holiday leads the team in the past month with 1.33 Points per Shot, actually even ahead of offensive dynamos Steph Curry (1.26) and Klay Thompson (1.19). It’s not as if Holiday were only shooting rarely and getting lucky; his 0.21 Points per Chance rank behind only Curry (0.26), Thompson (0.26), and Marreese Speights (0.23), proving that his offensive usage has been hefty as well. Bottom line, Holiday has been shooting well and doing a lot of it when on the court."

Prototypical Bud "diamond-in-the-rough" player. MAN he's good at finding these guys...

Great read.

The only caution I will offer is that a lot of these numbers were cherry-picked over a favorable time period when Holiday was hot.  If you took most player's best month of the season their numbers would look really good.

I read the article and left feeling better about the move. I didn't know that the dude had a 7'1" wingspan. To put in perspective, he has a longer reach than Frank Kaminsky, Stanley Johnson, and Justice Winslow (then again, I might be taller than Winslow by now). Like someone stated earlier, they let other teams do the grunt work for them in terms of turning them from a project to a player, then bring them in when they think they might become somebody.

I think that this whole player development thing is a foreign concept to a lot of us because, to be honest, we have never seen such things in these parts. Unless a guy they brought in had the 'want to' in terms of being a better player (see Wilkins, Dominique), what you saw on the day they arrived is what you saw three years later if that. We can go on and on about players they've acquired over the decades who never bothered to play to their strengths, work on the holes in their game, or shake bad habits. Two years ago, most of us rolled our eyes and thought we were tanking it when they brought in DMC; now he's an eight-figure guy and the highest paid player on his team. If he can do that with DMC, imagine what he could do with 'more' talented guys like Hardaway, Tavares, and Holliday. If he manages to pull another rabbit out of his hat, we all will be the beneficiaries because of it...

What the Hawks are doing reminds me of the Braves' apex. Free agents and farm guys alike all excelled.

I loved when they tagged the team a "club" and stress "system" and "program." Many free agents going to teams less shrewd are actually gonna hurt their teams and regress their games because no one stresses the importance of constantly getting better while minimizing weaknesses. The fact that our staff is on the cutting edge of analytics and scouting is invaluable in an age where people are just throwing money away to lose.

I have no doubt about the two years of play plan to maximize any player in our system. One of the hallmarks of The Dubs (you know, the historic team that everyone has seemed to forget about) was length. Every player in the league can go through a notable spike in advanced metrics, but I'm very optimistic about his measurables as it pertains to how we attack.

THAT was hilarious!! What a child!

The funniest part to me is C-Viv trying to throw some condescending sass in Fanatic's direction with the "ok, you know more than me," comment. When in fact, that is almost assuredly true. It almost made me feel sorry for C-Viv.

Just got this from C-Viv...

'Some people out there think they know more about the league than I do but let me be the first to break this one. The Hawks have just traded for Steve Smith and Grant Long. I just got it from my many sources that I have. Now I dare any of these wannabe experts out there to get the scoop on me again...'
