I was having a hard time figuring why you were so concerned with minutes and it hit me. You want it to be about 82 games and that times so many minutes per game in the season; then limit the players to those minutes for your team and do the math. Like you said, a simple spreadsheet will do that all day long.

I just want to know who drafted the best players overall but make everyone declare a traditional starting five for the best eight. And also do a best 13 for shits and giggles. I think the only way to half way do that is to use a overall fantasy scoring system based on the whole season that each player had.

We could do it both ways for sure!

Yes can we use some kind of a scoring system to determine some kind of a winner. Drafting and debating is fun as hell but why not have some way of measuring how we draft? Whether it's fantasy points, real life points lol...just something.

Are hopefulhawksfan and Thomascredlr tag teamin? Lol

Since they are new and/or not regularly posting, I let them in with some redundancy to hopefully avoid one flaking.  We always end up with a tag team or two anyway.  Hopeful has been more engaged so far.

In past seasons, AFTER the NBA season was over, we did:

  • average PER (Player Efficiency Ratings, take the totals and divide by the number of rounds)
  • total WS (sum the Win Shares, w/o dividing by 36 or 48 or whatever)
  • 70% EWA (Estimated Wins Added; that percentage often seemed to give a reasonable number for wins during an 82-game season)

Of course, that only works post-season for comparative purposes, since rookies/injured players from 2014-15/Eurostars didn't get any NBA floor burn last season. And that would just be counting the players; the drafted head coach theoretically influences those values one way or another.

All I did do post-draft is find a database like Mark Porcaro's and do physical attribute comps like average age/height/weight, then leave it to the individual team GMs if they want to summarize the wonders of their particular draft haul.

Since this is designed to be a draft for the next 5 years, how your team adds up in September 2016 or June 2017 doesn't really tell the full story as far as "winners" go. What I'd like to see is somebody dig into the 2011 Dynasty Draft (assuming there was one) and run the numbers for those teams based on 2015-16 data.

I'm not the biggest fan of the C.A.R.M.E.L.O. projections that FiveThirtyEight is whipping up ("identifies similar players throughout NBA history and uses them to develop a probabilistic forecast of what a current NBA player’s future might look like"), but for our purposes they might be useful in establishing steady 7-year projections of WAR (Wins Above Replacement) that could be summed up easily for the next five seasons. The downside is that young players without much history generally have low/modest projections until they've established themselves as stars.

Ya I was gonna say that works great except for trying to draft for the future.Like the way I drafted last year was take a bunch of players fromthe2013 draft that were super strong but also around age 20-23. I figured that my team would be competitive now but have a shot at the title for multiple years starting in 2017-2020. I think we need to continue to look at past dynasty drafts up to 5 years later to determine who actually did well.

I mean if we did it strictly based on PER , WS, and EWA at the end of this year only then I'd change my strategy and pick more vets and be in WIN NOW mode vs trying to groom people in my organization. BSPN or Yahoo or lw3 (:-)) need to come up with a fantasy machine that crunches #'s to make sense of what we are doing here in our fantasy draft. We could call it "the 5 year NBA championship cruncher".... Just put the players names in and it would give you all their projected stats and #'s for the next 5 years. I think you are capable of this lw3! I have faith in you lol

You are officially first alternate.  As you know, that will likely come to pass.
