One blogger's assessment:

With the Toronto Raptors’ 2014/15 season finishing sooner than predicted, it is time to start looking back at the team’s players, head coach and general manager. We at Raptors Rapture present our 2014/15 report cards. Stay tuned throughout the next two weeks as we analyze each piece of the current team.

Landry Fields came to the Raptors with so much promise in 2012. Unfortunately, since arriving nothing has really gone right for the 25-year-old. Fields has received a couple of elbow surgeries, leaving him without a workable shooting stroke. In fact, many times reporters stated that they had seen Fields practicing shooting with his left hand before games. Naturally, without the ability to shoot, Fields has struggled to make it onto the floor as a useful shooting guard.

He played in 26 games this season, averaging 1.8 points and 1.0 rebounds per game during 8.3 minutes of playing time. Head coach Dwane Casey simply couldn’t find a consistent spot for Fields, attempting many combinations but not sticking with any for too long. When DeMar DeRozan went down with his groin injury, Fields was given some time as a starter, appearing in nine games. Though this was donely mostly to keep the bench unit intact, Fields did do a nice job of playing a high effort brand of team-first basketball. He helped in any way he could, re-endearing himself to fans.

The thing about Fields is that he really is a great defender, probably even one of the team’s best. He can lock down point guards, shooting guards and small forwards. When he was on the court, he consistently contributed defensively, which actually meant a lot to a team that was so poor on D this year. Unfortunately, the sexiest stats are offensive ones. This fact will always hurt Fields, since he appears to be really awful if you only look at a stat sheet. But, on the court he contributes with priceless defensive skill.

He is a quick, athletic player who has the size to cover bigger guys (6-7) and the speed to cover smaller ones. Fields has always had a very high basketball I.Q, allowing him to  read plays and get in position. Admittedly, James Johnson‘s arrival to town probably hurt Fields’ chances of getting decent minutes, since Johnson is also a great defender but he can actually score.

Overall, Fields is a broken player. He can only play half of the game, even if he plays that half well. When he got to play, he worked hard, but his ceiling is extremely low.

Defence: A

Offence: D-

Overall: C+

He's 27. Is he a credible option?

Not advocating... just thinking out loud.

I thought about him as well during the playoffs. Then I watched him play. He is not the same player. Injuries took away from him. It wasn't just a bad fit with Toronto as one would think.
