Premium Member Sothron Posted March 9, 2018 Premium Member Report Share Posted March 9, 2018 I am also worried about this. Losing Butler is a huge blow and they don't have an easy schedule.

bleachkit
Their next five games are Golden State, Washington, San Antonio, Houston, and Clippers. If they lose all five they are done.
KB21
14 straight years of no playoffs with all those lottery picks. How can this be?

There are no guarantees. The low end of results is what you claim happens to every team that goes into the lottery by design -- lottery pick after lottery pick. I'm not going to shy away from that or from the fact that by flipping a lottery pick they were able to acquire a player this offseason that had them as the #3 seed in the West until he was hurt. Definitely rooting for them to get the #8 seed.

Admin capstone21 Posted March 9, 2018 Author Admin Report Share Posted March 9, 2018 ....and Andrew Wiggins is probably the most overrated player in the league. He can score but isn't good at anything else. He does not deserve that huge contract.

KB21
Quote “The one thing he wouldn’t do going forward was try to lose a game, or you know, ‘tank,’ ” Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca told Boston.com. “So if we were going to have a strategy, maybe like ‘The Process,’ he was not going to participate in that.” “We said, ‘No, we’re always trying to win. We’re going to try to win on the fly and rebuild on the fly,’ ” Pagliuca said. “Who knows if we can do that or not, but that was certainly going to be the strategy. Tanking is different than developing talent. We try to keep all the good talent.”Read more at: https://nesn.com/2017/11/brad-stevens-wanted-no-part-of-tanking-before-being-celtics-coach/

Moderators AHF Posted March 9, 2018 Moderators Report Share Posted March 9, 2018 KB thinks trading away your key vets who led you to a championship in order to win 20 some games is not tanking and therefore was primed for big success but trading away Dwight Howard and letting Sap walk after they barely won 50% of their game in order to win 20 some games in tanking that dooms the team forever. The only difference between us and Boston was the fact they traded KG and PP and Ray Allen walked in FA and got a bunch of top picks from the Nets. They didn't start trying to add real vets until season 2 (which hasn't come yet) and they already had top lottery picks in line.
Lurker
Ultimately what was a boon for Boston is they had a GM who was a complete idiot that they took advantage of. Where are they without said GM? Like I continue to say, neither extreme works and you often have bad front offices that exacerbate things. One year is never going to tell you if you have a bad front office or what. Just because they wanted to win, does not say that BudCox was a good front office. It was a bad front office and really outside of Pop and San Antonio, coaches that have become the President of Basketball Ops, it has worked absolutely terribly for all of them. Wilcox actually wanted to tank fwiw! (if it was on him, he'd have tanked)
Guard
Most teams will never be in a position to where they can be gifted lottery picks without rebuilding. Boston got lucky quite frankly and would be rebuilding if Billy King wasn’t one of the worst GMs in the last ten years. It’s 2018 and the Nets are still suffering from his ineptitude.

If anything draft picks have taken on too much value from teams. I only wish we could have flipped Horford, Millsap and later Howard for picks and/or young talent.

It is all about getting value above contract price. The two main ways of doing that are rookie contracts and superstars. Both of those situations you can leverage for huge value even when the market appropriately values the player. For FA, you have to count on every other team out there failing to properly value a player in FA and you swooping in to get a steal. That happens too but is much rarer and runs a much higher risk of going the other direction (overly valuing a FA). FA is very tough to get surplus value.
