I'm still pissed about the Pape Sy pick.

Anyone else embarrassed?

The guy is either the biggest "under the radar" pick ever or the Hawks are a joke at drafting. You pick.

He's another safe waste of a second round pick on a guy who will never make the roster. The cheap ASG couldn't sell that pick so they settle for basically picking no one just like they did with Cenk Aykol and David Anderson.

I'm not pissed about the pick since I didn't expect to get anything out of that pick anyway and truth be told I'm very intruiged by the mystery of him. Not to mention it NEVER hurts to have a guy who wants to make it to the NBA so badly that they pay their own way to workout for you.

Still not happy about the handling of the 31st pick though!

A late 2nd round pick in the NBA might as well be a 7th round pick in the NFL. In that position, you'll be lucky to find a guy that makes your team, let alone be able to contribute down the road ( especially if he's a wing ).

You guys know better than this.

Yep but if that is truly the case northcyde why have a 2nd round to begin with; and just let teams go after the Boozers, Milsaps, Big Bens (now that would have been a really bad 53rd pick) etc all on their own. Maybe the owners who do draft well understand they have a decided advantage over the clubs that don't and secondly, here is were our owners really missed with 31, the 2nd round is a low risk ( zero risk honestly....non guaranteed contract) high reward proposition.

There were a couple of guys there to take a flyer on besides Pape.

Yeah but we had a chance to redeem ourselves somewhat if we had of used the 53rd pick on Stanley Robinson. This was a guy who was projected to go early in the 2nd round. Heck not too long ago he was projected as a late 1st round pick. Paying someone with Stanley Robinson's potential the rookie league minimum would have been a great bargain.

i don't know...they made $3mil off a pick that they would've paid what, 500k? for only playing randmo minutes, if that? that's 2.5 mil worth of profit for nothing (3.5 if they just pocketed the money vs. paying a rookie), that HOPEFULLY they actually will use towards a player who could help them out. if they just pocket the money, it would be cheap, but if they actually do what they could with that, i'd call it savvy. time will tell.

i actually was a little more embarrassed by the fact that pape sy had to pay his own way to work out. i mean, if the team thinks that there is any shot that you could be useful to the team, enough to bring you in for multiple workouts, and you can't even shell out $500-1000 for a lousy plane ticket? that speaks more to me about how cheap the team is.

one amusing observation for be regarding the draft--i thought it was pretty funny that the player the hawks picked in the first round wasn't there, but that both of their second round picks were. just found that interesting.

Complaints about pick 31 are unwarranted .Why try to draft a guy like the German kid who they said could be a young Rick Smits? Why draft a kid like Whiteside who avr 5 blocks a game in college and has a sick wingspan and upside? Why develope these guys when you can use that 3 mill to sign back Joe Smith and Randolph Morris. Maybe even go splurge on Johan Petro.

Not "embarrassed" about taking Pepsi at 53, more regretful that we didn't take someone who will help our bench right away (when there were clearly such players available, a rarity at this point in the draft). Until he proves otherwise he's another Othello Hunter.

If they don't legitimately think Sy was the best talent on the board, I would be ticked off about the #53 pick. At that point, it is truly a long, long shot to find someone who can contribute but it is definitely not worth throwing away since you could always draft the next Manu Ginobili, Chuck Hayes, Ben Wallace, etc. It is a long shot but someone wins the lottery, right? Don't count on it but don't throw away a ticket in hand either.

My beef remains more with the #31 pick. NJHAWK nailed it:

IF we use that 3 million and bring in a player that can actually make the team better then I have no problem with us passing up drafting a project big there. On the other hand if we use that 3 million to sign scrubs that won't improve the team then I have a big problem with us making that trade.

Being the eternal optimist that I am helps me to believe that we will use that 3 million to make this years team better than it would have been if we hadn't made that trade, however, my complaint is that we didn't get any draft pick compensation for giving OKC the best choice in the 2nd round. It would be difficult to convince me that we couldn't have found a team willing to offer the 3 million, plus a future 1st or 2nd round draft pick, and that's my issue is that I just don't feel like we got maximum value in that trade.

No one is saying the 31st or the 53rd pick would be an all-nba player but at least it could have been likely an upgrade on the bench instead of completely wasting it like we just did.

The chances of Whiteside/Alabi/Robinson contributing at the next level seem exponentially higher than that of Pape Sy
