Does Ferry / Budz see Jenkins as a starting SG?

I'm wondering if they see him as being skilled enough to start for us long term. Can he be taught to be a good enough defender? I wonder how Jenkins was thought of by the Spurs in their draft process as Ferry was heavily involved in that and I'm sure Budz was too. I question whether Jenkins is quick enough and if he has enough dog in him to be a starter too. Thoughts?

First off I love Jenkins as a player. Good fundamentals, obviously a great shooter and a high character guy. Unfortunately his lateral quickness, and quickness overall is going to hold him back as a starter. I'm not saying he can't or won't get quicker. He looks like a guy that will work on his shortcomings and strengthen his weaknesses. I just think Ferry is going to build such a talented team that Jenks will be our 6th,7th,8th man off the bench. Just my opinion.

I think he has a legit chance to be a starter this year considering the teams circumstances. With he and Lou already in the fold and the Hawks looking to bring Korver back, I don't see the Hawks pursuing anymore shooting guards. I do think Jenkins will get better on both sides of ball by next season.

I have to agree with this. His game is more come in and hit a three or get some points. The rest of his game seems, lacking right now. Maybe,he will work,on those other facets...that is a great way to,earn pt.

He is no different as a rookie than a rookie Dell Curry. He should get better at shooting in the NBA, playing off the ball, getting stronger, and understanding the game better. Clearly, his impact can be elevated by the presence of CP3 passing and ability to run an offense as well as Dwight's defensive persence to keep attackers out of the lane. Jenkins while doing a decent job of making rotations could learn to improve on his off the ball defense. I seen him make rookie mistakes on defensive rotations. Something we seen Korver trive at while Jenkins is still getting the hang of it.

Players do improve, especally rookies. We seen that in guys like Jimmy Butler and numerous others. They see where they need to improve in and become assets to the team. I think he will be our starter regardless of the personnel next year. Him and Horf are my only locks to start 2013-14.

PG: ?

SG: Jenkins

SF: ?

PF: Horford

C: ?

what we expect of him will depend on who we sign. If we get the big names he can come in and fill his role, but don't think he's ready for more than that. Spurs do a great job of putting players in situations where they can succeed. Not always our strength. His work needs to be done on the defensive side but Bud is great with player development. I say his chances are less than 50/50

I'm hoping that he can be that starting 2 if we build a strong enough cast around him. I love how hard he works and I truly hope he dedicates himself to his lateral quickness, agility and strength this offseason so that he can be a good enough defender to not be a negative out there.

Remember how well he defended Kobe? He's got it in him. He just needs to work on it.

That's true! Can he do it 32 mpg for 82+ games though? I sure hope so. I do have the confidence in him working on his game though.

He has no handles, quickness, and defense. He is not an NBA starter in my mind. Unless he has a huge off season I really don't want him playing significant minutes.

The SG position is probably the weakest position in the entire league right now. Bunch of specialists, PGs masquerading as 2s (or just undersized 2s playing their natural position) and past their prime guys like Kobe, Wade, etc.For that reason I don't see why Jenkins couldn't be a starter, not like a lot is asked of the position these days.

Can he be as effective as Danny Green? I don't think he can be as good defensively but I think he could at least put up 10 points per game like Green did this year and maybe a little more if we need more. Last year he was a .091 ws48 player so that's below league average and we were better with him off the court, but I think he made some strides towards the end of the year.

I'm just asking this because if somehow we did trade up to the top of the draft, should we look at a SG up there and look to keep Jenkins as a specialist, or should we be more focused on getting a SF that is a plus defender to pair with Jenkins.

To me I feel that he's well rounded enough to be a 4/5th option in the starting lineup or play closer to a 6th man role off the bench rather than being just a pure specialist. If by your scenario we moved up and took say McLemore then yes he would be on the bench but if we grabbed Porter or even Mohammed later I could definitely see him start as his skill set meshes with theirs. I just think his negatives are overstated but he has some very good positives that he would be a plus role player regardless of starting or not but those are the keywords, role player. Which is fine, not every player needs to score 20 but he'd still be very valuable at around 8-11ppg because of the tangible intangibles of spacing.

Jenkins had the same ws /48 number as JJ Redick and Jason Terry..Honestly, Jenkins should've been the starter last season.

If we do end up trading into the top 5 picks in this year's draft, would you think that it signals we are going after D12 and CP3 or that we aren't, or that it doesn't really effect it one way or another. I'm not sure why but if we do get a high pick, I feel like Ferry might think D12 and CP won't happen. Not sure why I feel this way.

That's still below what is considered league average.

It is, sometimes WS is overrated but in this case, it is not. Jenkins wasn't a starting level player last year. In next year, he should be regardless of the personnel.
