You know. I'm all for Trae making the all NBA team this year. I don't believe he has a chance at it this year.  He won't have a chance next year unless he performs well in the playoffs this year.

From a team construction standpoint, I believe it's way better for the Hawks if Trae makes All NBA next year.  If he makes an ALL NBA team this year, he'll be eligible for the rookie "super" max due to the Derek Rose rule.  Someone please check me on this.

What are your thoughts? Do you want Trae to win it this year or wait for him to get his flowers (lol.. @kg01) next year?

I don’t wanna stop the man’s money.  If I’m a GM though I’m certainly not happy about awards voted on by a “global panel of sportswriters and broadcasters” complicating negotiations with these agents.

He will likely get it next year so it don't matter.

Is this a trick question?

If he's deserving he should get it.  He's the FoF, he has the stats, he's changed his game to make sure everybody eats, he's trying on defense and most importantly the HAWKS ARE WINNING and in the PLAYOFFS!!!

Beside he was voted in as an Allstar last year, this year he was not and the coached blackballed him.

Let Ressler worry about the money.

He's going to get the max regardless, so you should root for him to get consideration.

I think the OP's point was that a supermax contract is worth a lot more money and leaves less money to build a roster around him.

Yes. He deserves third team consideration. Since they flubbed his allstar selection and underestimated his value to winning, they need to make up for it by putting him on the all NBA third team. He will be an All NBA first team’er in the near future and beyond. They might as well get used to it.

I was referring more from a roster construction standpoint.  The Derrick Rose Rule.

Quote

Derrick Rose Rule:

While the designated rookie rule allows a player to sign a longer extension with his current team, the Rose rule allows that player to sign for a larger-than-usual salary with his club. The rule, which was created after Rose won the MVP while playing on his rookie contract, allows young stars to qualify for a higher maximum salary – 30% of the cap instead of 25% – early in their careers.

Although we colloquially refer to this rule as the Rose rule, it’s technically known in the CBA as the 5th year, 30% max criteria, since a player has to meet certain criteria to qualify for the higher maximum salary in his fifth NBA season. A player becomes eligible for the 30% max when at least one of the following is true:

  • The player was named to an All-NBA team in the most recent season, or in two of the past three seasons.
  • The player was named Defensive Player of the Year in the most recent season, or in two of the past three seasons.
  • The player was named Most Valuable Player in any of the past three seasons.

A player signing a rookie scale extension can receive the higher Rose-rule max if his extension covers at least four new years. A player signing a free agent contract can also be eligible for the Rose-rule max, if he’s coming off his four-year rookie contract, or if he’s a former second-round pick or undrafted free agent with four years of experience, and is re-signing with his current team.

I was thinking  along the lines if Trae got an extension over the summer it would probably be 25% of the Cap instead of 30% the cap.

  Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Total
30% Max 33,600,000 36,288,000 39,191,040 42,326,323 45,712,429 197,117,792

25% Max 28,000,000 30,240,000 32,659,200 35,271,936 38,093,691 164,264,827

Difference 5,600,000 6,048,000 6,531,840 7,054,387 7,618,738 32,852,965

That $5,600,000 in savings can go towards Kevin's extension or a better player.

It may be a moot point though, if he qualifies for the Rose Rule his 4th year and the extension negotiated during the summer includes terms for making the all NBA team.
