The Atlanta Hawks are averaging the fewest passes per game in NBA history

I think that's also just a matter of well who is a good passer outside of these two? We literally don't have another decent passer in the entire rotation. OO, Cap, Collins, J-Hol, Hunter ALL average less than 2 assists per game in their careers. None are particualrily good passers. I know a lot of us are looking forward for Bogi to give us some shooting but he is a very underrated passer averaging around 4-5 per 36 mins. Having him on the floor is going to allow us to see some better ball movement.

Nate does not have a designed offense to get guys open on CnS (doesn't bode well how much they are missing those shots either), it's pass, pass until you get a mismatch and attack it.

This falls on the coaching staff although to be fair to Nate we have exactly good/great passers in Trae and DJM. Bogi is average. Everyone is either below average or just flat out bad at it.  We're not the C-Webb Kings team where you had legit five starters on the court at the same time that could all pass and find open players.

It's the downside of having a point guard dominated offense. Fewer guys touch the ball.

I'm not worried about this as much as JC disappearing for long stretches.

.I love the guy but we need somebody stronger and better defensively at PF if we are being honest.

What's this a red herring?

On Showtime Lakers, beside Magic, who was a good passer?

On any of the Kobe Championship teams, who was a good passer?

On Nick Nurses Championship Team, after Lowry and Van Vleet, who was a good passer?

First let me say that it's way too early in the season for all this.

2nd, the ball goes through Trae and DJM.  How many guard duo's in history can you find that averaged 17 apg?

• Isaiah and Joe didn't do it. 
• Dame and McCollough didn't do it. 
• Draymond and Steph didn't do it.

Point is... when you consider possessions.. I'm sure that there's some advanced stats that says we're doing historic levels of assists per game with those two and they get assists on about every possession.

Different NBA though. Wasting possessions was extremely normal in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. Today, possession wasting will kill you.

On our 2nd unit, Aaron H. & Jalen J. aren't bad at passing the ball.  AH we expect.  JJ is perhaps our very best big man who handles the ball quiet well.  Watch out!  He's a thief!

I expected to see some very specific sets to put Trae in CnS opportunities off ball.  And this isn't about running him like Curry, he isn't that, but if you want him truly off ball and not just someone else bringing the ball upcourt just to give it back to him.  Run an actual play with a screen, back screens, what angle is he going to come off screens, how tight will he come off a screen, INTENTIONALLY AND PURPOSEFULLY screen him open and get him in scoring position.

For that to happen, you have to have that play in your book, since it's about timing and positioning of the screens, who is the screener, how many screens, and who is getting him the ball. This is Nate's Play Book:

I don't think its about quality of passes, its about number of passes.  You don't need to be White Chocolate to move the ball to an open teammate or just zip it around the perimeter.

 

Trae and DJM take the heat for this, but they aren't the only ball stoppers on the team.  Hunter never passes, Clint never passes.  Collins is the only frontcourt player who will give it up to a teammate with a better shot,

First off, this is not a fight over eras... Again, find any guard combo that averaged/averages 17 apg.  I already gave you steph/draymond.  I also gave you CJ/Dame.  

BTW... CP3/Harden falls short too...

That was a different style team that had a different type of offense.   They didn't have a guy who could get you the ball in your spot consistently.  The offense was 4 guys on the perimeter and one guy working inside. 

So let's envision...

Trae, DJM, Collins, and Hunter are on the perimeter...  Clint on down low working inside...  Passing probably increases but we will lose ... and a lot.  
How do you know Diesel?  Because that's what we did in the playoffs last year...

Kev, Hunter, Trae, and Delon were on the perimeter...    Gallo or OO was working inside.  And we got pummelled.. because the heat forced the ball out of Trae's hands and lived with us trying to beat them from the perimeter. 

Moreover, I don't want Hunter trying to pass.   I don't want Clint trying to hit the open man.  He's not freakin Jokic.

Facts.  Not to mention Hunter and Collins are sub par ball handlers.  I'm hoping as Jalen improves it will open things up for us because his passing ability and vision would really help.  AJ has shown signs of knowing how to penetrate and kick.

They didn't look like an NBA champion squad on paper for sure but I would have loved to have seen them play out the playoffs healthy.  In the regular season, they were like a finely tuned machine that was extremely effective but also extremely fragile.  You start removing or damaging components and it falls apart.  Losing Thabo and Korver was huge.  Cleveland probably still stops us but would have been exciting to see LeBron face off against the team at its strongest.
