I've been watching the 2024 NBA Draft class and it's been... weaker than usual

So in my head and not using google the worst drafts in talent (not talking about drug use ruining careers) was 2000 and whichever draft had Anthony Bennett as #1 in it.

This 2024 draft class looks very weak. That white kid from Kentucky looks like a shorter Alex Caruso, a fun kid no doubt to watch play, but the fact he's now a 6-10 projected pick speaks VOLUMES about this draft.

Watching Kentucky now..

They have alot of young talent..

Sheppard just entered the game..

Hawks need size.  Most Squawk posters agree to this.

Duke Center, #8 on NBASupes list, qualifies.  I have him on my list of players I wish to see here.  Question is, will Kyle Filipowsky be there when our turn comes to choose our draft pick.  If not, what will it take to get him?  Would he really be worth moving up in the draft order?  I suppose it depends on what the asking price happens to be.

If I am the Hawks

9. I'll take Reed Sheppard. If he's on the board, I'm taking him at 1 or anywhere.

If you ask me who's the superstar in this class in 4-5 years, it's easy. It's Reed. He's gonna need some time. I don't think he's someone you just throw into the starting 5 day 1 but he will be a starter sooner than later and he can fit our scheme with Quin. https://tankathon.com/players/compare?players=reed-sheppard--stephen-curry--trae-young--tyler-herro

24. Terrance Shannon Jr. - Highly productive, good player, comparable with Josh Hart https://tankathon.com/players/compare?players=terrence-shannon-jr--josh-hart--quentin-grimes

51. Zvonimir Ivisic - Diesel's guy.

I don't see guys who are perfect fits for us. I like Zaccharie Risacher a lot. I think he might be a great fit for us. Especially at the 2 long term. I'll probably go the best player available with upside like we did last year for this scheme. Reed is just special long-term.

I'll probably shoot a flyer to Ryan Kalkbrenner

If I'm the Hawks, I'm taking Cody Williams.  I see a very good player there. I haven't looked into Reed Sheppard too much yet, but will watch some scouting videos of him.

My guy is Cody Williams.  6'8" offensive and defensive upside. Ballhandling!  That's the type of guy the Hawks need.  You are correct he's a few years away because his frame needs a lot of work, but once he gets it, I think he'll fit perfectly with the team.

They need to find a big 7 footer somewhere though.

I love Sheppard but think he and Kobe are both combo guards.  Also don't think a Sheppard / Trae backcourt is big enough.  So I'd be pumped to root for him here but I'm super skeptical that the fit is really there.

I'll take Reed in a heartbeat. He just needs three years but in year 4, he will be amazing.

Kobe is basically a bad team stud. He will be our next Jason Terry

Reed is the rare once in a generational player that just needs time to adjust. A scheme like Quin is a perfect fit.

I will get stoned for saying this and I realize it won't happen but...

Reed has elite hands and shooting ability. He's a good passer. He's a good defender because his hands are f***ing amazing. He has the best defensive hands I've seen on a PG since Rondo. Always active. His footwork is terrific.

I would draft Reed and trade Trae for a long SG to put next to Reed.

Yes, I realize this won't happen. But good grief are people sleeping on Reed Sheppard.

Where Trae's game is empty outside of the on ball stuff. Reed can play on. Off. He smart like Haliburton. He makes quick and smart decisions.

Not sure how many times I will repeat this but I love Sheppard.  The issues for me are about team needs and fit.  If there isn't a guy in the draft who fits our needs and has comparable talent then absolutely pull the trigger on him.

Your post mentions trading Trae to make room for Sheppard.  That is fair because I think it is very likely that he and Trae would be too small (again) in the backcourt.

You've posted numerous times about how Quin's mission is to make the team longer and bigger.  Sheppard doesn't do any of that.  He makes the team smaller if he is playing the 2 and if he is backing up both guard spots then he is coming off the bench for you long-term  which seems more of a luxury for this team which has huge needs in the frontcourt.

So, again, I'm almost always behind BPA for max value in the draft but this one is a hard fit assuming the team is building around Trae (and JJ, etc.).

The best thing abut him is his instinctual feel for the game.  It lets him stand out on both sides of the ball even if he doesn't quite have his Dad's athleticism.

He would also be a legacy for us which would be fun.

home from hockey game, we won 4-3 btw, great game...

I was not referring to you @AHF I was talking about NBA fans in general and the experts sleeping on him. This kid has special ability written all over him.

My suggestion about the Hawks trading Trae and going after Reed are my personal opinions and are not in any way what the team will do. Travis got fired for two reasons and one of them was wanting to trade Trae. So that's not happening unless Trae demands a trade.

Trae's problem isn't his size, it's his game. He all flash and no substance. Reed is some flash and all substance. Reed would have a chance to pass Horford as my Hawks GOAT if we took him when it's all said and done.

He's gonna take some time like Haliburton did. He gonna have to adjust and he's not selfish so he wants to play the game, the right way.

Hawks best path to any time of contention is trading Trae to San Antonio for our picks. If they took a guy like reed they would have project to have defense at every spot and enter the Flagg sweepstakes. This team is much further away from contention than they want to admit. A request will help them accept reality

Blow this wack shit up. It will never work

I like Quin better than Bud. Get him dudes who know how to play ball and play both ways and want to work together as a team and he will have us winning in no time. He can't win with some of these idiots.

Yup and Koonin on his radio show talked about getting players to fit Quin system. It’s gonna start most likely Monday but it needs to go further than that. Trade Trae and let’s build from the ground up

We need High IQ Basketball players with elite feel for the game who are productive on both ends. Relentless. Know how to play on and off the ball. I feel like OO and JJ are probably the only two worth a shit long-term for this scheme. I like Ausar a lot and DET needs a PG. I want to get DET 1st 2024 and get the French wing. I don't care for Sarr much. Go get Reed Sheppard with our pick and let's call it a day.

We don't need not superstar. We need a team that plays as one and if someone develops into a superstar like JJ, Reed, or Ausar, it's organic.

This shit we are doing right now is horrible. We are too small, too unathletic, and it's boring to watch.

I don't want to see anymore ball-holding players on this team ever again. I want the 60-win Hawks again but with more athleticism, talent, and skill. We can't do that with some of the players we got right now.

I am willing to trade Trae, Dre, and Clint for DET 1st 2024, Ausar, and a future 1st.

Yup they need to go back to team ball not Trae ball. 5 players playing together on a string and together they are good. Yeah one of those guys needs to be nice individually but this shit now ain’t it. I pray Trae asks for a Trade this summer. A lot of pressure from his camp to make win now moves and I think them selling could make him switch his stance on atl. It’s best for hawks and if they land a top prospect out of it with their own picks even better
