It wasn't it was merged. http://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1121101&start=930

One of the Magic's board most trusted posters posted this:

Alright man I'm telling you what I would assume to be a decently legit source told me.. if they're wrong then they're and you're right, but we wont know until tomorrow morning and if they are right them I'm gonna search for you on here. Not to mention all this is happening after a very interesting interview with Otis on trades earlier...

So let me get this straight . .

If we're trading JJ for garbage, people are OK with it because we're getting out from under his contract.

But if were JJ being traded for something like this, those same people would be cool with a deal like this, not because it makes the team better or worse, but because we'd get out from under JJ's contract?

What's the difference?

[edit] . . lol @ that redundant statement.

What I meant to say was . . But if we trade Smith for "garbage", people would be up in arms because we're not getting what we think we should get for him.

**********

Let's play devil's advocate though.

I know people are so against "old guys" around here, but Marcus Camby would instantly become the best rebounder on the team. His 14.2 rebounds per 36 minutes is top 5 in the league. The major drawback to Camby, is that he's almost guaranteed to miss 25 - 30 games a year.

Andre Miller would instantly become the best PG on the team. And as crazy as it sounds, he may become the best post player on the Hawks. His 3 point game is non-existant, but he still gets to the rim and can convert the play. He'd also represent the best playmaking PG JJ and Horford has ever played with. As a PG, he may be slightly better than Hinrich overall.

Anderson represents a guy you can bring off the bench as a spot up shooter. Duhon would function as the 3rd PG behind Miller and Teague. Orton would be the big man project.

Recap

Camby is a rebounding upgrade over Smith, but significantly worse offensively and a major health risk.

Miller is at least Hinrich's equal and may be better

Anderson is a 3 point specialist who can rebound every blue moon

Duhon and Orton are throw-ins . . equal to the vet minimum contracts we'd sign anyway.

Trade grade: C

The trade is nowhere near the catastrophe that people are making it out to be. Smith's departure would be Horford's gain, seeing that it should lead to him being used more. We'd finally get a chance to see if Horford could be an 18 - 20 pt . . 10+ rebound guy.

As the first true PG the Hawks would have since Mookie, Miller may be given the reigns to the offense. He's still one of the better defensive PGs in the league. Most of all, a guy like Teague would learn how to play the PG position more by watching Miller, than he would Hinrich.

In the end . . no . . I probably wouldn't do the trade, because Camby is such a health risk. But we'd be getting enough pieces back in key areas, that the team wouldn't take a step backwards if we did this. We just wouldn't progress much either, unless someone like Teague and Marvin stepped up to be more consistent.

And if Horford blossoms with a passing PG getting him the ball in the right spots, it will definitely help the team inch closer to that next level.

Just to make this thread even more assanine.

Here are the 2 trades currently being proposed that could both go down and how it would reshape the Hawks.

Trade 1 is:

Josh Smith and Kirk Hinrich to Orlando

Andre Miller, Marcus Camby, Ryan Anderson to Atlanta

Chris Duhon, Jameer Nelson and Daniel Orton to Portland

I have personally checked this in the ESPN trade machine and it works. Should Atlanta do this deal, you can almost assuridly bet there is a draft pick (probably Portlands) involved.

Trade 2 is:

Joe Johnson to Chicago

Carlos Boozer to Detroit

Richard Hamilton to Atlanta.

I have personally checked this on the ESPN trade machine and it works. Should Atlanta do this deal, you can almost assuridly bet there are draft picks involved.

Assuming Atlanta did both of these deals and after I get back from throwing up, the roster would look like this.

Jeff Teague/Andre Miller

Richard Hamilton

Marvin Williams/Ryan Anderson

Al Horford/Marcus Camby

Zaza Pachulia

60 million spent - 8 players under contract, 4 left to acquire.

Assuming 2 firsts come back to us in these trades, it would be probably Chicago's and Portland's.

Of the other 4 teams we are talking about as trade partners, Detroit owns the number 8 pick, Portland the number 21, Orlando does not own a first round pick and would have to give a future first instead, Chicago owns the 28th and 30th picks.

So assuming these trades went down, my best guess is we'd get the 21st and 28th. Probably not even that.

That trade would be a firable offense for me. Two years from now we would likely have nothing but cap space to show for this deal and in the short-term it would tank us into the lottery. I don't buy that it isn't that bad. Of course, I also don't want to dump JJ for expiring crap either.

PG - Miller

G - Johnson

F - Marvin

PF - Horford

C - Camby

Johnson, Horford and possibly Marvin would be the main scorers in that starting lineup, with Miller being the facilitator and Camby being the rebounder/defender

PG - Teague

G - Duhon

G - Wilkins ( if re-signed )

F - Anderson

F - ( vet mininum )

C - Zaza

C - Orton

Horrible bench, but maybe Drew would let Teague be the main offensive threat on the 2nd unit. Either way, that vet minimum guy might need to be somewhat of a scorer ( McGrady maybe ).

At least you have been consistent in that mindset.

But I'm pointing out the hyprocrisy that people come with, when they talk about just dumping JJ. But now that it's Smith, people are all up in arms.

Clyde, you aren't reading the trade right. In your understanding of the trade, Portland gets nothing. Portland gets Duhon and Orton (errr..and Nelson (edited)). We do not.

If you trade one of Smith or Johnson for a lesser player, you might as well trade both. The Hawks aren't good enough to lose one of their three best players and still make the playoffs.

I agree. That is, unless you gain a draft pick who turns into one of the three best players, and that's hard to project, especially in THIS draft.

If this rain keeps up I'm going to have to go somewhere sunny does anybody have suggestions where?

He was asking about his Twitterati for ideas of quick getaway places after the rain we had today. Of course, a couple were right on time in suggesting Orlando, but as Smoove recognized, for reasons that had nothing to do with meteorology.

Look at Josh Smiths recents tweets:

Talk about playing with our emotions! Sorry but nobody plans a "quick getaway" to Houston ... I should know I've lived here for 17 years. Houston and LA have players that interest me but I can't imagine us getting any of the big 3 so I doubt Miami could be an option unless they're wanting to move Bosh.

I'm not saying he's messing with peoples head, I just think it's ironic how the timing is perfect. I hope Josh Smith stays!

At least things are getting interesting now. I hated coming here and seeing the same thread up for a few days. Now this is the fun part of the off season. :stirthepot:

Don't forget, Josh has friends here, Dolf... recall that he spent most of a summer working out under Olajuwon.

Thats another thing that doesnt compute about this rumor. I know Smoove was playing on twitter but Im talking about this supposed 4 team list Smoove gave the Hawks. He doesnt have a no trade, they could send him wherever the hell they feel like it for the best deal as long as it works for both teams and the league. I mean unless Smoove wants to retire.

As infuriatingly stupid as Josh Smith can be, I would be very sad to see him go in even a good trade. I would strike down upon Sund with great vengeance and furious anger if he let Josh go for anything resembling this garbage.
