For JJ and AJ, trying to play Huerter decent minutes probably meant moving Hunter to the 4 for about 8 - 12 minutes a game.  That would essentially eat up their development time.

Now, Hunter can stay at SF full time, while JJ gets backup minutes at the 4 and AJ gets minutes at the 3.

If we keep JC and give regular minutes to JJ and AJ then I'm pretty happy about that aspect of the deal. If we don't play JJ and AJ to give minutes to Justin Holiday and Maurice Harkless then I'll be less happy about that.  JJ and AJ should be significant parts of the rotation in 2023-24.  Holiday and Harkless won't be with the team anymore most likely.

I think Ressler's statements are where the disconnect arises.  This is a money saving move and Ressler saying he would pay the tax made some people think we wouldn't do this type of cost cutting at the expense of useful players.

The thing is we aren't worse overall.  The addition of Murray makes us better.  I would actually be disappointed from a business and roster construction perspective if we didn't pull the trigger on clearing out a log jam at SG.

We are so close to the tax line, the smart thing to do is to avoid the tax if possible this year.  The exception would be landing a third star.  Huerter is not a guy you go into the tax land to pay, especially if you have two other starter quality SGs on the roster. 

This saves us from going into repeater level tax the following year.  Plus we have another asset to use in future trades with this pick.

It's an outstanding move by that franchise.   They legit have 3 All-Stars on that squad.  They improved defensively last year, and should be even more improved next season. And a big like Gobert in the middle could literally enable the Wolves to have an All-Star player at the 5 at all times.

Sacramento should show that type of desperation sometimes, seeing that they've missed the playoffs for 15 straight years.

We cried and complained.  We don't have a star to help recruit other NBA players.

We get Trae.  He recruits.  Now we call him our other GM.  We just can't!

Considering who our coach is, there is a big possiblity that Justin Holiday is his choice early on.  Fields should mandate that Nate play the more talented kids.

None of that addresses the disconnect between fan expectations and this move though.  I wasn't arguing whether it made sense or not - just why many fans would naturally recoil from this kind of move.  What you lay out (assuming we are not doing more deals) makes perfect sense but my point was that fans are still going to be scratching their heads because hearing Ressler say he'll pay the tax makes them think that he'll pay the tax right now.

In terms of being better or worse, you have to take a big picture perspective to justify this deal.  When you look at it as the roster before we dealt Kevin and the roster after him (with Murray already in the fold), then we are inarguably worse.

I dunno about most of ya'll but I give the ATL offseason a A grade so far:

Murray - Addressed a massive perimeter defense hole and secondary playmaker

Gallo Out - Addressed Guaranteed Contract Issue vs. Waiving for $5m vs using in trade = Good use of that contract

Huerter Out - Alleviated Log Jam and garnered market value for someone who was plateauing.

If you look at it as a in the tax vs out of the tax issue like some twitter boneheads like to do then you'll never get anywhere

When Sacramento makes those types of moves, they make stupid moves historically.  They traded an unprotected first to create room to sign Rondo as a FA - that pick was used to draft Jayson Tatum.  They traded a first for JJ Hickson.  Etc.  They have made desperate moves.  Just bad ones.

Totally with you.  I think that statement is really unfair.  TS isn't going to cede authority to Trae.  I'm sure they will take Trae's view into consideration but that doesn't mean Trae is making all the decisions or anything.  That is just a healthy star/franchise dynamic.
