went on hoopshype this morning and saw this tweet:

the link in the quote goes to a spanish website but I found another site talking a little more about him. and yes, I know its talking about the Mavs interest but since the other site did mention the Hawks in it as well I figured it was relevant.

The Dallas Morning News is reporting the Mavs have finally jumped in the hunt to shore up their front line by making an offer to Brazilian power forward/center Rafael Hettsheimeir.

Not a household name to most, Hettsheimeir has spent the last few years playing in Spain, most recently with CAI Zaragoza in Liga ACB, after starting his career in his native Brazil. Last season, the 6'10" big man averaged 13.3 points and 6.4 rebounds in 30.1 minutes per game.

Hettsheimeir recently had knee surgery and will not play in the Olympics, but DMN reports he is expected to visit the U.S. soon to evaluate his physical condition and possibly meet with NBA teams.

Various online sources, including NBAdraftnet, indicate the prospects on Hettsheimeir were cautiously optimistic on a possible career when he entered the market in 2007-08, possessing many of the basic skills and strength for competitive European hoops but possibly needing grooming for success in the NBA.

The Mavericks are largely a mixed bag of uncertainty right now and seem to be looking at a roster rich with other PF/Cs at the current time.

With centers Brendan Haywood a strong candidate for amnesty and Ian Mahinmibeing courted more aggressively by other teams, the Mavericks currently have a roster that includes Brandan Wright, Yi Jianlian and rookie Bernard James, who are all likely to play both positions, as well as Dirk Nowitzki.

Current Brazilian players in the NBA include Leandro Barbosa, Nenê, Tiago Splitter and flop specialist Anderson Varejão.

thoughts?

by the way, here is the spanish website discussing the Hawks' interest. if anybody can please translate i'd appreciate it. thanks.

Just from what i'm reading on the guy it looks like teams (mostly us, the Spurs, and Mavs) see some NBA qualities in him. It's also interesting to note that the Spurs (Ferry's old team) is going after him as well. While I don't wanna give Ferry the benefit of a doubt on an international center with low rebounding, I think he would be a good pickup for our summer league team. Who knows, San Antonio gets good international players, why can't we?

You realize the league leader averaged 8.3 rebounds per game, right? Hettsheimer was 9th and he was very close to being much higher since they clustered. I don't know much about the guy, but I do know stats are very hard to translate between leagues. The conversion rates people propose are extremely variable, but they universally say euroleague supresses stats.

This is my translation. It is not a literal translation because I am trying to mimic the delivery that we are accustomed to receive here in the USA.

CAI Zaragoza wants Center Henk Norel to substitute for the loss of Hettsheimeir. The Braziian player has recieved good offers from Europe, but is now concentrating on offers from the NBA. The Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks have shown interest, according to the local Zaragozan press and confirmatory reports from this web.

The rest of the report concentrates on Zaragoza's candidate to replace Hettsheimer.

I'm interested at the right price. Dallas and San Antonio have two of the most advanced scouting groups in the league and both want him. I know BK and Sund wouldn't have been able to pick him out of a lineup.

I agree with you 100%, Ferry must've done some advanced scouting on this guy back with the Spurs. The Mavs and Spurs are known around the league for having good international scouts. I say we sign him to a summer league contract and see how he does but I wouldn't mind him as a bench warmer for now. Nothing can be worse than Eton Thomas.
