So, with the signing of Lou Williams at $5 million, we are basically at $130 million (below the luxury tax line) with one open roster spot and a pair of two-way contracts (Skylar Mays and Shariffe Cooper).

I just asked this question in another thread. So we have about $5.9 or whatever of the mid-level exception to add one more player if needed?

$5.7 mil by my calculations to stay under the $136.6 Luxury Tax Threshhold.

Correction...maybe it's $5.5 million.  The remaining balance of the MLE if we assume $4 million of it went to Dieng.  Since @thecampster  said using the BAE hard caps us?

Bringing Sap back would be cool, but I'd be much more inclined to go after another wing to play behind our core 4 in Bogi, Huerter, Hunter, and Reddish. Someone like Wesley Matthews would be a nice edition I believe. He doesn't have to play much, and would only play if there a lot of injuries to the team.

Wright and Lou are both totally able to play the 2

That's fine. I was more so saying we should look for a more natural wing player to sign as a depth piece.

I'd prefer a 6'-7/6'-8" wing

I would be more inclined if there were quality options available. Mathews was awful last year. Danny Green maybe? I'd rather have Sap than either of these dudes.

Danny Green resigned with the Sixers.

If you view Jalen Johnson as a Small Forward in year 1, then I wouldn't mind. But I think we'd be creating a bit of log jam to where we would have 4 guys at 1 position (although some of them can play multiple positions), and I don't think it would be fair for all of them.

Seems like a number of log jams to me but not that it’s a bad thing

Need help!  I'm trying to understand Trae's extension.  Spotrac has it listed as a $172.5M deal.  I understand the first year, $29.75M is exactly 25% of the 2022-2023 cap, $119M.  But my understanding is on rookie max extenstions Trae would be getting 8% increases every year after that which would look like this:

  • Year 1: $29.8M
  • Year 2: $32.1M
  • Year 3: $34.7M (this is where we start deviating)
  • Year 4: $37.5M
  • Year 5: $40.5M

But Spotrac has this estimated (below): where am I off?  I have the total at $174.5M but they show $172.5M

I figured this one out... @JayBirdHawk

The annual increases are always the same amount which is 8% of the first years salary.  So the increase doesn't compound like I originally assumed... 8% of the 29,750,000 is $2,380,000 so Trae's salary goes up $2,380,000 every year.

"In addition to the soft cap, the NBA utilizes a luxury tax system that is applied if the team payroll exceeds a separate threshold higher than the salary cap. These teams pay a penalty for each dollar their team salary exceeds the tax level. From 2002 to 2013, if a team exceeded the luxury tax threshold, they must pay one dollar to the league for every dollar that they are over the limit. For the 2013-14 season and onward, teams paid an incremental rate based on their team salary. They also have to pay a repeat offender rate, which is an additional dollar for every dollar over. For 2014-15 teams pay the repeater rate if they also were taxpayers in all of the previous three seasons. For 2015-16 and all subsequent seasons, teams pay the repeater rate if they were taxpayers in at least three of the four previous seasons. The table of rates is shown below."

Current tax levels[edit]

Amount over tax threshold Standard tax per excess dollar Repeat offender tax per excess dollar
$4,999,999 or less $1.50 $2.50
$5 million to $9,999,999 $1.75 $2.75
$10 million to $14,999,999 $2.50 $3.50
$15 million to $19,999,999 $3.25 $4.25
Over $20 million $3.75 + $0.50 per $5 million $4.75 + $0.50 per $5 million

@thecampster - Players on two-way contracts are not counted in the team's salary totals for cap purposes.  You can take Mays and Cooper off the list.  From Coon's FAQ:

Quote

The following are not included in team salaries:

  • The salaries for the team's two-way players (see question number 82).
Quote

A Two-Way player is not included in his team’s Team Salary (see question number 13), so teams don’t need cap room or an exception to sign, acquire or convert (see question number 83) a Two-Way contract.
