Playing Time: How are we distributing minutes this year?

ATLHawks3

Recommended Posts

Curious to know what everyone on the board thinks the minutes distributions for the team will be.

If I had to guess...

PG: Young (33) / Wright(15) / Williams (0) / Cooper (0)

SG: Bogi (23) / Huerter (20) / Reddish (3) / Wright (2)

SF: Hunter (25) / Reddish (20) / Huerter (3)

PF: Collins (28) / Gallo (18) / Hunter (2) / Johnson (0) / Hill (0)

C  :  Capela (30)/ Deing (15) / Collins (3) / Okongwu (0)**

*If a player has (0), more likely than not they will only play in blow out situations or they will be added to the rotation if there are injuries.

** Player is currently injured and doesn't figure to be in the rotation until near the All-Star Break.

I think early in the season Nate will try to balance the minutes more evenly, probably favoring Cam and Dre. Later in the season, barring injuries the minutes will look like the ones above. My early season distribution guess would be…

Trae 30, Wright 12, Coop 6

Bogi 25, Cam 20, Kevin 3

Dre 24, Kevin 18, Cam 4, JJ 2

Jbap 26, Gallo 16, JJ 6

CC 28, JBap 4, Gallo, 4, Gorgi, 10 JJ 2

Lou, OO, Mays, Solo will get mins later in the season/or injury to others

I have a slight bias towards the rookies as I think they can earn mins early based on their practice play if they are not in the Gleague

I'd be shocked if Bogi plays just 23mpg, at least early on. He's our second-best offensive player, and McMillan rode him for over 30mpg even when he had a busted knee and ankle in the playoffs.

I think Wright will rarely see time at the 2, and Dieng will see fewer minutes than 15, with Collins being a small-ball 5 more often (although after OO returns, I doubt JC will see any minutes as a 5). I also think Lou will get a few minutes of burn every other game at the least. So...

While OO is out:

PG: Young (33) / Wright (15) / Williams (3) / Cooper (0)

SG: Bogi (28) / Huerter (17) / Reddish (3)

SF: Hunter (23) / Reddish (20) / Huerter (5)

PF: Collins (24) / Gallo (18) / Hunter (6) / Johnson (0) / Hill (0)

C  :  Capela (30) / Deing (10) / Collins (8) / Okongwu (0)

After OO returns:

PG: Young (33) / Wright (15) / Williams (3) / Cooper (0)

SG: Bogi (28) / Huerter (18) / Reddish (2)

SF: Hunter (25) / Reddish (19) / Huerter (4)

PF: Collins (28) / Gallo (17) / Hunter (3)

C  :  Capela (28) / Okongwu (15) / Dieng (3) / Collins (2)

Don’t have my numbers but just throwing out there that average mpg for people will add up to more minutes than are available because it doesn’t reduce someone’s average when they miss a game but everyone who picks up their minutes goes up.  Example:

SG minutes

game 1 - Bogi 25, Huerter 20, Cam 3

game 2 - Huerter 26, Cam 20, Lou 2

game 3 - Bogi 24, Cam 20, Lou 4

48 total minutes per game

Average per game:

Bogi 24.5

Huerter 23.0

Cam 14.3

Lou 3

This is what I was thinking too.  We'll have five "starters" getting around 30 minutes a night each.  Our "second five" (Huerter, Dieng/OO, Cam, Gallo, Wright) will get around 18 minutes per night each.

But, all of the starters will get some nights completely off, which will give the second five some starter's minutes for about 8 or 10 games a year, and the third five (Dieng/00, Lou, Cooper, Solo, Johnson) back up minutes that night.

Believe that regular season 2021-22 will be appreciably different than post season 2020-21... for these reasons...

- It is Nate's routine to lean heavy on his starting 9 in the playoffs, but/and even though he doesn't play 13 guys in most regular season games, he's prone to giving players load management nights depending on the opponent and how concentrated the stretch of schedule is. Of course, one could argue he was often forced to do so b/c of the toll of injuries last season. Could be wrong, but I don't think that changes because of things he's said in interviews that I've interpreted as pointing in that direction.

- Between Delon and LouWill, Nate will be somewhat less reluctant to give Trae more down time.

- Dieng will get more playing time than did OO, and when OO returns, it just seems likely that there will continue to be some division of labor among the three

That would be interesting to watch.  I can’t remember any Hawks player on a load management program unless they were coming back from injury.

Would be a missed opportunity with this kind of depth if we don’t, imo.  Everybody gets minor injuries over the course of a season.

Start of the season, if everyone is healthy ( but Okongwu )

PG - Trae ( 32 ) - Wright ( 6 ) - Lou ( 10 )

G - Bogi ( 26 ) - Huerter ( 14 ) - Wright ( 8 )

F - Hunter ( 24 ) - Cam ( 18 ) - Huerter ( 10 )

PF - Collins ( 20 ) - Gallo ( 18 ) - Hunter ( 4 )

C - Capela ( 28 ) - Dieng ( 10 ) - Collins ( 10 )

  • Trae - 32
  • Collins - 30
  • Capela - 28
  • Hunter - 28
  • Bogi - 26
  • Huerter - 24
  • Cam - 18
  • Gallo - 18
  • Wright - 14
  • Lou - 10
  • Dieng -10

That's an 11-man rotation.  Nate says he likes to play with 9 - 10 at the max.   So who's time is getting cut?  If you cut Lou out, the rotation looks like this.

PG - Trae ( 32 ) - Wright ( 16 )

G - Bogi ( 26 ) - Huerter ( 22 )

F - Hunter ( 24 ) - Cam ( 20 ) - Huerter ( 4 )

PF - Collins ( 24 ) - Gallo ( 20 ) - Hunter ( 4 )

C - Capela ( 28 ) - Dieng ( 12 ) - Collins ( 8 )

  • Trae - 32
  • Collins - 32
  • Capela - 28
  • Hunter - 28
  • Bogi - 26
  • Huerter - 26
  • Cam - 20
  • Gallo - 20
  • Wright - 16
  • Dieng -12

I see on that first distribution, I got way too many minutes at SF, and not enough at PF. So this is the fix.

PG - Trae ( 32 ) - Wright ( 6 ) - Lou ( 10 )

G - Bogi ( 26 ) - Huerter ( 14 ) - Wright ( 8 )

F - Hunter ( 20 ) - Cam ( 18 ) - Huerter ( 10 )

PF - Collins ( 22 ) - Gallo ( 18 ) - Hunter ( 8 )

C - Capela ( 28 ) - Dieng ( 10 ) - Collins ( 10 )

I'd rather try to fit in Jalen Johnson, than to try to fit in another guard

PG - Trae ( 32 ) - Wright ( 12 ) - Huerter ( 4 )

G - Bogi ( 26 ) - Huerter ( 18 ) - Cam ( 4 )

F - Hunter ( 26 ) - Cam ( 14 ) - Johnson ( 8 )

PF - Collins ( 22 ) - Gallo ( 18 ) - Johnson ( 8 )

C - Capela ( 28 ) - Dieng ( 10 ) - Collins ( 10 )

My prediction

Hunter will not play minutes at power forward unless there are injuries

Jalen Johnson will see approximately 10 minutes at Small forward.

Cam will see over half his minutes at shooting guard.

Can you construct the full lineup? I'm curious how this would look from your perspective.

You might not want to hear this but I would trade Bogie and play most of Cam's minutes at shooting guard.  Y'all know my dream line up is.

Trae/Wright/Mays

Cam/Huerter/Mays

Hunter/Johnson

John/Gallo/Okungwu

Capela/Deng/Okungwu

I almost want us to load manage this year, as we have to find a way to get Johnson on the floor.  Gallo may need to be put on the block sooner than expected.

We don't need to make major moves/decisions until next offseason, but we could easily put a package together for a superstar player and STILL be deep as hell.

Let's let the season play out. If all 15 main lineup guys stay healthy all season long than sure, load manage.

But injuries and foul trouble do happen, and having a deep team keeps us from having to struggle through those times. You trade Gallo and you are a John Collins injury away from Solo playing 20 mins a night again.

The Gallo thing to me has to be for a blockbuster deal and not just to clear a path for JJ to play. We potentially have a championship window right now. Gallo's experience and skillset is something you need in a run to the chip. In the NBA, until proven otherwise, vets are who help you win rings. I love our young guys as much as the next. They will be exciting as hell to watch. But the Lou's, Bogi's, Wright's, Gallo's, Clint, Dieng and Solo's of the world are going to be the ones who help our core navigate the postseason and get over the hump.

Add to that, Gallo may be the guy on the team who wants a ring the most. He was one of the toughest voices in the locker room preaching urgency last season. We still need that energy.

I keep trying to figure out who this magical super star player is...And please don't bring up Dame or Bradley Beal.  We have enough guards.
