Official Game Thread: Hawks at heat

Lw3, where do you get all your stats? Your game thread just took me back to the 80's and 90's with all the Riley Laker, Knicks and Heat talk. Crazy awesome game thread for sure.

I remember when Riley snagged Zo from the Hornets in 95-96 and Zo said something along the lines of wanting to get paid like Jim Carey from the Mask. Lol. I'm pretty sure it was the Mask, one of the movies around that time, possibly cable guy lol.

In any event, I'm vacationing my last 2 days and missed the Heat game tonight and will also miss the Bucks game  tomorrow but have both DVR'd and ready to watch. Hope Dwight is ok. Great win Hawks!!! 8-2 baby yeaaaaa!!!!

Too close for comfort !  Their center is a rebounding machine.  Wow !

Under pressure, at the foul line, our Hawks came through !  That was the

difference.

Hope D8 recovers from his injury soon and is not out like our former all star

center, who is out injured.

Ugly win but a win - i'll take it.

Do-It-All-Paul:

Quote

Paul Millsap stepped up. After Howard left, the Hawks used Muscala and Kris Humphries on Whiteside. Millsap wanted his chance and convinced Budenholzer to give it to him.

“Whiteside is obviously a load,” Millsap said. “Dwight goes out. I think (Muscala) did a good job. Down the stretch, I pretty much had to convince coach to go let me go play the five. I told him I would go in there and do my best to get him off the glass and contain him. He trusted me.”

Millsap played the center and used his body on Whiteside. The Hawks turned to a gang-rebound mentality and it worked enough to hold on for the win.

Why did Millsap want the challenge?

“I feel like I can cause him some problems,” Millsap said. “I can get to his body, get low, keep him out of the paint. If he catches it, use my hands to disturb him. The few times he got it, I was able to deflect it.

Dennis:

Quote

Few may remember that Dennis Schröder went 0-for-3 from the free-throw line in a win over the 76ers Saturday night. Schröder remembered. After that game, Schröder went to the practice court and shot 100 free throws and then worked on his outside shot.

Against the Heat, Schröder made a pair of free throws with 5.9 seconds left to ice the game.

“You’ve got to make those,” Schröder said. “You are up one. You are not putting pressure on yourself. You want to win so you have to make them. I just stepped up with confidence and made them.”

What about that extra work?

“It was worth it,” Schröder said.

This game was a real eye opener for me!  If Bud doesn't change something, this team will start to disappoint!

Observation:

The Hawk starters are not gelling.  Too many selfish plays ( Bazemore)...Too much dribbling (Dennis)...Too many bad passes ( Korver)...Too many post ups (Howard) and not enough energy to start each game (everyone).  The bench is better because the ball moves and there is not much over penetration by the point guard when Delaney is running the point.  Also the bench is satisfied with the obvious play or pass where the starter try to make the pin point pass which often times is errant or late.  I might have to agree with Lurker after that game.  There isn't chemistry with the starting 5 and Bud may have to explore the possibility of having 1 or 2 starters play with the 2nd unit to improve the cohesiveness of the starting group.  I know there is pressure to start you highest paid players but if It isn't working, adjustment should be made.  The right combination will make us a better team.

millsap and howard still, having hard time playing together, they should be justt whooping ppl down there

I think that the Millsap-Howard combo is the least of our worries.  The Dennis-Howard combo is more troubling.

I'mma start calling you Stan Van Gundy (master of panic).  Honestly though, you raise some halfway decent concerns.  I've said all along we're a work in progress despite the record.  Again, as I've said all along, we should expect this having replaced 2 starters and shifted the focus of the team a bit.  If we don't play well or if we lose a game, it's not time to set fire to the lifeboats and drown ourselves (huh?).  Give them an opportunity to work through the issues we're all seeing.

... and furthermore, we're probably gonna lose tonight.  Howard will probably sit as an early-season precaution and MIL will come in rested.  Now, I've given you sufficient warning, Peo.  I don't wanna have to confiscate your shoe laces and hide the sharp objects.

Master of panic?  Who is panicking?  It just an observation.  Look...the second unit is new to one another too but they aren't turning the ball over like the 1st unit which lets you know that there are chemistry issues with the 1st unit.  And like Lucker said last night...neither starting wing can dribble or pass.  That is a problem!  Korver is averaging almost 3 turn-overs a game.

It's you.  You're panicking.

The 2nd unit plays totally differently as they have a different set of agendas.  The 1st unit has to establish certain players, a certain way of playing and everything that goes along with that.  That's necessary if we expect to win anything.

The backups can just go out and play.

Exactly - it has been 10 games. At least give them a 1/3 of the season  (27 games) then make an evaluation. They have to get a real chance to work out the kinks and gel TOGETHER. Bud is already staggering Millsap and Dwight's playing time together.

Pointing out that the bench is playing well is a good thing, they are also playing against the other teams bench, they are just that much better - our bench is one of the best in the league.

This may be true but many of the bench players play with our starters and against the other team's starters and still don't turn the ball over like our starters.  I remember when I was to the 1st to point out our rebounding issues over the past 3 years only to be dismissed in the same fashion.  I just want the team to play better.

You were not the 1st to point out the rebounding issues.  The coaching staff was.

Bench are allround type of players(THJ, Muscala/Millsap, Hump, Thabo, Delaney). Starters have more specialists type players(Dennis, Korver, Howard, Baze). Of course getting that to gel is very very very different. But whatever...

It does not help that the art of feeding a post player is apparently lost. We need to bring in Mark Price or Mark Jackson to teach these guys (not just Dennis, this is a team issue) about how to get passes to a post player. Not just low post but every kind of entry pass into the post.

Atlanta has not had a center like Dwight since Deke. That was almost 20 years ago. The league itself does not have many post players which is a crime against all that is good and decent in the world. The fact is that we as a team are failing to properly use Dwight and until we can address that then you will continue to see high turnovers and a starting offense that looks disjointed at times.

We have not 'fed the post' for a long time. That skill takes time to master. 10 games is not enough.

It's about timing, the ball should be on its way to Dwight as he getting in position so that as soon as he's got position the ball is in his hands for him to make a move.

By the time as pass is made - it's too late.

This takes constant practice and video review. Hopefully it improves as the season goes on.

You can't honestly believe you were the first person to notice we had rebounding issues. It was obvious to anyone watching and every stat available said we were a horrible rebounding team. The problem was you believed Bud was actively against rebounding instead of considering the strengths and weaknesses of our roster.

I guess it's a good thing Bud finally started caring about rebounding as soon as Dwight was available and willing to come to Atlanta.

Not last night he didn't when he went with that small line up down the stretch playing Thabo at power forward unnecessarily.   Anyway, I was complaining about the rebounding issue during the 60 win season while everyone here was singling me out as a complainer until it became painfully obvious.

Howard whas injured...It whas actually the way to go because there whas no way of going toe to toe with them on the glass after that. So we made them run, Whiteside didnt do much, ran out of gas and had to be taken out later as well. And btw, Dennis boxed him out brilliantly a couple of times offensevily and defensevily without fouling in that stretch. Really, without Howard we have to play much like the old way. Not that that is not worriesome.
