Kevin Huerter is the biggest NEGATIVE on this team right now

To me the promise of Heurter is that he's shooting around 40% since january 1st from 3, but if you have been watching the games you realize that he has missed a ton of wide open good looks from 3.   Those are the shots that good shooters will start knocking down regularly with more experience in the NBA.   The dude is shooting over 50% on the season from both corner 3 spots.    His potential as a shooter is incredible.

Kyle Korver could not handle the ball.  Huerter at least has some dribbling skills.

I don’t trust his ball handling.. I fully expect turnovers anytime he dribbles in traffic. I guess you can say that he technically has better handles than Kyle, but still not trustworthy.

He’s got the handling ability.  The issue is the role he has been put into.  He’s not ready to be the secondary ball handler on a team.  His role should be as a spot up shooter on offense until he builds the strength and stamina needed to progress into being a secondary ball handler.  This is why I very much dislike what the Hawks are doing from a player development standpoint.  You don’t develop players by putting them into roles where they are going to fail.  You put them in roles where they will have success and build from that.  See what Mike Budenholzer is doing with Donte DiVicenzo as a contrast to what the Hawks have done with Kevin Huerter.

Mixing in zone has helped a lot (only took LP almost 2 full seasons to realize this 😒) but it's not enough. Bringing Kevin off the bench when Trae gets a breather is the obvious short term solution. Get it together LP DAMN!

Yep, one of the best defensive minds and teams in the game the past 10 years has mixed in zone ever since it became legal. The Heat do it all the time when they are over matched for big portions of a game. They use it really well to stop runs.

If you have length and quickness, players can cover a zone and its not as damn confusing as switching every second. Capela should help a lot with what ever defense we are in and he gives us a much better chance to play straight man, zone, or switch.

Red velvet needs to be packaged in the offseason with our lottery pick (unless we get Edwards) to bring in a good young 2 guard All Star level talent.

Sounds good IF we can find a partner....How many AllStar level talent SG's are available on a team who needs 2 more young players?  Sac might give us buddy Heild for Kev and a 1st..lol...

You really need to stop comparing one of the deepest and most capped out teams in the league to the Hawks. You may as well be comparing us to the Celtics when they had Bird, McHale, and Pariish. I mean seriously, go post that comparison on the other general board. You would be laughed off of it so fast it would make your head spin.

Let's also replace Collins with Giannis and we can start doing this the KB way

Really at this point he is just a 3pt specialist that handles the ball well, but struggles defensively and doesn't do much else well. He's average at attacking the hoop... not sure why he's starting over Cam.

Cam is easily the best defender; Reddish and Hunter give us our best perimeter defense. We have two obvious holes, defense and threes. Cam's shot has fallen off a cliff since the all-star break. Huerter's has also these last couple of games. With our weak three point shooting bench, its hard to pull out a win with our three ball dependent offense when both are not shooting well. Trae basically needs 40-50 points in those games and that is to much to ask.

I think they should both be getting somewhere in the 30 minute range; which means Hunter would have to give up some minutes. But since its stupid to play someone all 45 minutes at SF, Reddish and Huerter can be on the floor together at times. What bothers me is when Hunter moves to the 4 to get Huerter and Reddish in the game. I think Hunter at the 4 in most match ups is a horrible defensive choice.

I really hate small ball in most cases; so for me it comes down to who is making the most impact. Reddish or Huerter, then make the decision in game on who to keep on the floor. That can change quarter to quarter; so be ready.

I loved Kev his rookie season, so he’s fallen off due to the soph slump, injuries, role etc.  His 2:1 assist to turn and shooting stroke buys him some patience with me.

I agree ☝🏾 and thinks there’s more to him. He seems like he’s fundamental to somehow not adjust to this current sophomore slump. I’d hate to see us deal him in the summer for him to blow up with another team. He needs to get stronger and quicker.

It’s crazy this summer I thought Hunter over Cam on defense even though @kg01 and @NBASupes were dropping hints. I didn’t think Cam would be this aware and good on D this fast or ever. ❤️ it!

That's one of biggest issue right now.  I actually like what they did with Cam, by letting him be the offensive 1st option with the 2nd unit and putting the ball in his hands.  He's embraced that role and has been fantastic since New Year's.

Kevin should have the green light to take any open shot he has, but if he's not making the shot, his value on the floor diminishes dramatically.  And his defense is hit and miss at best, mainly miss at this point. He's a guy that will have to put in extra work and study the tendencies of players on his own, and try to take that away ( or at least slow it down ) to improve as a defender.

On the defensive side, the young guys shouldn't be put in situations in which they have to consistently guard larger and stronger players. We can't help that with Trae, because he's the smallest guy on the court. But we can do a better job with matchups with our other guys.

Hunter is the guy I look at the most out of the "Core 5". He can be really good if we keep him out of that 4 spot, and strictly play him at the wing spot.  He's just not strong or athletic enough to be effective on both ends of the floor at that position.  At the 3, I think his offensive talent can really be maximized. He already has a nice offensive game off the dribble, when he's able to shoot over people who are his size and smaller. He has a post game that is definitely underutilized, because it's only effective vs guys his height.  And he's shown that he can really heat it up from the outside at times.

I think Coach needs to understand that he can still develop his "Core 5".  But playing them together at all times at this point in their careers, may not be the best move to make every night. When it works, go with it.  When it doesn't, don't try to force it to work.

This summer hopefully he avoids any need for surgery and does indeed hit the weight room with serious purpose. That with constant year round coaching may build a pretty good backup two way player for us. If not, a three point specialist has always been valuable off the bench in this league and he has shown he already is a good bet for us at that. Remembering that Ricky Pierce ended up with a great career in that role.
