Would the tax apron be about $155,000,000?

It's going to be very difficult for the Hawks to take an 'avoid the Luxury Tax at all cost' approach to the offseason and expect to meet Ressler's demand of getting better than last season.

FYI - just because we begin the season as a Tax Paying team, doesn't mean we'll pay the tax. It's where your roster stands at the end of the season that calculates the tax payment.

(So if we suck and are over the tax, we move players to get under before the season ends.)

Per Ressler:

Quote

“Getting more folks who could handle the ball, create and more defensive-oriented players — or both — that’s an obvious answer,” Ressler said when asked what kinds of players the Hawks need. “When I talk to Travis and Landry (Fields) about this very subject, which you could imagine happens frequently, I think their view is the league is complicated. You have to use the free-agent view, you have to use the draft, you have to use the development of the players — and, frankly, the availability of what’s out there will determine the decisions we make. We have a pretty good sense of where we need to get better.”

Ressler was also asked about losing important role players from the 2020-21 team. Solomon Hill was one of the most trusted confidants for each of the young players

Yes, $6 million over the LT (that's only in play if we do a SnT)

https://www.spotrac.com/nba/cap/#:~:text=NBA Team Salary Cap Tracker&text=If a team uses their,Luxury Tax Apron (%24155%2C196%2C200).

Teams that are under the cap will have their cap holds applied to their overall cap while teams that are over the cap will not have their cap holds applied but must use any exceptions they possess. If a team uses their Bi-Annual, Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level, or Sign-and-Trade they will be considered to be hard-capped and must keept below the Luxury Tax Apron ($155,196,200).

Yep, I agree. I think we probably need to play this season out over the tax at 2.5 million.

If all things are great - over 60% wins, look to upgrade and get better.

If its mid, 50% wins, look to trade Bogi or JC

If we stink, 40% or under wins, trade everyone not named Trae and the rookie contract guys and tank. Sit Trae out and tank for Wemby

We’re gonna miss Danilo.

I don’t think so. I mean, he came up big for us in 2021 in the playoffs but last year he was running us out of a bunch of games. Not saying we were meshing nicely as a unit or anything but he wasn’t helping going 2-12 or 3-11 on a bunch of nights.

The 2021 playoff Gallo… is gone. I could be wrong but he looks tired and he has wear n tear on the body. One of the best shooter in the NBA spot up wise still though no doubt.

RS Gallo was worth 25 wins. He was valuable for us. Sadly, he wasn't good in the playoffs this year and he was food against Milwaukee

Sadly, no one was good in the playoffs... well, perhaps except for Delon.

But I believe that's a whole other thread. 😉

One big thing to consider:  If the Hawks do go into the tax and have to pay a few million, what are the chances that the value of the team goes up a lot more than the taxes?  Do the cost accounting.  Team is good because they must pay taxes.  Because the team is good, the value of the franchise goes up and up.

🧑‍🔧Under repair.

That to me is directly related to winning and marketing.

Right now, Trae is carrying that flag for us. He is the reason we get the few extra National TV games that we do.  His on court antics are what drives up views and viral internet clips.

That increases interest in him across non-Hawks and even non-NBA fans in general.

I have a female coworker who doesn’t even watch basketball AT ALL and she knows who Trae Young is. She is mainly interested in the giant engagement ring that he gave his fiancé that trended on IG, but she knows who he is.

Season Ticket and merchandise sales are the biggest revenue boosters for individual franchises. Most other revenue tends to be shared across all teams.

I know for a fact we are selling more jerseys because of Trae. I also know that those tickets for the ECF last year were through the roof. The hype surrounding the Atlanta Hawks had never been higher. Trae literally was box office.

I imagine if we can maintain a high level of success, our value as a franchise will raise during Trae’s time here.

Prime example. Golden State was a joke of a franchise in a broke city whose government does not want to financially support sports franchises .

Curry gets drafted in 09, 13 years later they are one of the most valuable teams in basketball. They have paid hundreds of millions in LT over the years and are happy as pie to do so.

The day Curry retires, they will likely go right back to being cheapskates again.

Ressler can and should be ok with spending money as long as it means we can do great things on the court. He will be rewarded handsomely in the  end

Just cut Gallo and resign Wright and call it a day.

Technically, they have to add 4 more players at minimum. Likely Mays, Coop, Brown, and a vet minimum who can provide leadership in the locker room

Bogi’s knee worries me. Nothing against the guy (other than defense) but I would want to move him too.
Gallo for contract reasons and Bogi for injury concerns are the 2 guys Im ready to off load. I agree on bringing back Wright. I also am ok with moving JC but only in a move for a player. Not a salary dump trade
