I always heard he had some attitude/diva issues. He thought he was too good for GL last season and would show up late to meetings, film sessions, and practice. If true, I'm sure that played a role.

No, no, no according to Peo it was alllllll about the summer league play.

He was too good for SL play, so he dialed it in. That's why he looked so bad. /s

I gotta wonder.  What did he expect when he got drafted?  Did he think it was gonna be a Trae/Sharife backcourt?  Weird.

That's very unfortunate if true. You can't have an unprofessional approach to your job.

That’s why he didn’t make it. He needs to save that love juice. That last pic, he didn’t last.

I heard she dumped him right before SL.. No wonder he struggled.. smh

It looks like it played a role in the two explanations that have been tossed out:

(1) Peo Model - Hawks were high on Cooper and intended to keep him for the long term before SL.  Then he stunk it up and they decided that his college and gleague experience that led to their high opinion meant little in the face of the 5 terrible games in SL.

(2) Camp Model - After a middling gleague season and discontent over his limited opportunities and Atlanta locking down 3 deep at pg, Atlanta had decided to get rid of Cooper but they figured they would try to trade him first.  They just got $2M for moving down a few spots in the second round so if they could get an asset for him it would easily be worth it given the cost of making the offer and cutting him was $50k.  Before and after his SL run, they could not get an asset for him and so cut him.

In either case, it seems very possible that summer league was at least a meaningful factor in either getting him cut or the Hawks not getting any offers.  So tip of the cap to you there.

To your bigger question all the problems with SL as a meaningful tool for evaluating players still applies:

1)  It is a small handful of games.  Imagine making your judgment on Trae after his first 5 games in the league, lol.  But even worse than that since he had a full training camp to get used to his teammates and learn what the team wanted to do.

2) Rosters are largely gleague talent.  But with the added downsides of points 1 and 3.

3)  Rosters are thrown together so players don’t know each other and coaches have no time to institute any real organization.  Play is closer to All-Star game level in that regard than regular season NBA level.

All the issues that apply to the summer league basically apply to the Drew League and similar exhibitions as well.  If a GM finds significance in one, he should do so with the other.

Speaking of the Drew League.. I still cant get over how thin JC looked.. You see him Peo?

For those that watched SL in its entirety - is this true?

I watched maybe 10 games.  Yeah i could see that i guess.  I don't remember any specifically but overall i felt he did a good job distributing.   G league in general doesn't see a ton of spectacular passes.  Honestly JJ may have actually had more passes of the impressive variety so that's not good.

The article was referencing Summer League, not GLeague.

Good luck Coop.

He seems like a Pistons type player to me. Electrifying one on one type guy but maybe doesn’t get the team going.

In any event, good luck to the kid.

We need to start using our 2nd round picks on guys that fit roles and bust butt.

I'm not sure he's a good one on one guy against quality nba defenders. He struggled against hungry summer league defenders. Someone else's problems now though. We have our guards
