What the heck happened over the last 5 days:

July 20th Hawks Kids Summer Camp

 

July 22nd signed QO

July 25th waived.

Sharife can play.  Whatever the reason he was let go doesn't matter.  He can play basketball.

He seems like a Pistons type player to me. Electrifying one on one type guy but maybe doesn’t get the team going.

We need to start using our 2nd round picks on guys that fit roles and bust butt.

As I stated back in April, there is more to this story then the media is discussing. Cooper and the Hawks were trying to spin summer league into up'ing his trade value so they could get something back for their investment. He bombed.  The Murray trade gave them their backup plan at the 1 and Cooper believes he can contribute. He did not want to go back to the g-league. No idea what his plans for the future are.

Whole situation doesn't smell right because the whole story isn't out there. It'll come out eventually.

He did a horrible job showing he shouldn’t go back to the g-league.

It may well be the right thing for him but I’m a selfish Hawks fan and was hoping to see it work out (just like I am hoping for JJ, AJ and Martin now).

Sure couldn't have helped that Cat Barber had an All-Gleauge season. Seems likely that Cooper felt overshadowed and his attitude could have reflected that. Dunno. Hate to even speculate that much.

It looks like it played a role in the two explanations that have been tossed out:

(1) Peo Model - Hawks were high on Cooper and intended to keep him for the long term before SL.  Then he stunk it up and they decided that his college and gleague experience that led to their high opinion meant little in the face of the 5 terrible games in SL.

(2) Camp Model - After a middling gleague season and discontent over his limited opportunities and Atlanta locking down 3 deep at pg, Atlanta had decided to get rid of Cooper but they figured they would try to trade him first.  They just got $2M for moving down a few spots in the second round so if they could get an asset for him it would easily be worth it given the cost of making the offer and cutting him was $50k.  Before and after his SL run, they could not get an asset for him and so cut him.

In either case, it seems very possible that summer league was at least a meaningful factor in either getting him cut or the Hawks not getting any offers.  So tip of the cap to you there.

To your bigger question all the problems with SL as a meaningful tool for evaluating players still applies:

1)  It is a small handful of games.  Imagine making your judgment on Trae after his first 5 games in the league, lol.  But even worse than that since he had a full training camp to get used to his teammates and learn what the team wanted to do.

2) Rosters are largely gleague talent.  But with the added downsides of points 1 and 3.

3)  Rosters are thrown together so players don’t know each other and coaches have no time to institute any real organization.  Play is closer to All-Star game level in that regard than regular season NBA level.

All the issues that apply to the summer league basically apply to the Drew League and similar exhibitions as well.  If a GM finds significance in one, he should do so with the other.

It’s one thing to believe you can contribute but it’s another to show it. He had a chance to at least show flashes and he failed.  Best of luck ‘Rife!

Have seen some consternation about the way ATL waived Cooper. It’s a procedural thing. Had to give him the QO pre-Summer League to retain his RFA status. If he had killed SL they keep him. He played poorly, so if they wanted to go a different direction, this was the way to do it.
