Premium Member Popular Post sturt Posted December 28, 2020 Premium Member Popular Post Report Share Posted December 28, 2020 This Doc Rivers quote got me thinking. Think Lenny deserves first place. Lon Kruger, of course, is a close second. (... and may it never be said that sturt lacks a sense of humor!) 7

sillent
Lon Kruger?? I feel like Terry Scotts, Larry Drew and Mike Woodson was better than Lon Kruger. Lon Kruger and the playoff promise Hawks. We I believe we had Jason Terry, Stephen Jackson, Glen Robinson, Shareef Abdul Raheem and Theo Ratliff and still couldn't get to the playoffs. Lenny was one of the best. Bud would be modern day Lenny. Team basketball over a bunch of superstars. Lloyd Pierce is someone we haven't had before and I believe has the recipe to take us to places we haven't been.

Premium Member Popular Post Diesel Posted December 28, 2020 Premium Member Popular Post Report Share Posted December 28, 2020 If I was ranking (top 5) 1. Lenny - He took nothing and made something with it. 2. Bud - Possibly could be #1 but his last years here were ???? 3. Fratello - Nuff Said. 4. Larry Drew - He was able to take the mess that Woodson couldn't win with an win. 5. Loughery - Never gets any credit but the man took a bad team and made them watchable. Honorable mentions to Woodson, Weiss and Brown. Here's the thing.... Larry Drew may deserve more credit. Our worse team with him was 44 and 38. That's trying to manage Iso Joe and Shot happy Smoove. I just can't put LD above Fratello. The real fight is Lenny and Bud. Bud was handed a good team and alllowed to have players that he didn't want traded. Trading Joe and Smoove meant that he could get anything he wanted back in return. The real question is what could Bud had done had Danny traded away Just Smoove, Got back Millsap and DMCthealltimegr8 and kept IsoJoe and the Crawkin. IsoJoe would have been the first real allstar that Bud would have had to coach and he works in an area of Bud's strength. Bud's teams usually excel but who really excels are the shooter. IsoJoe possibly could have been a 29 ppg player under Bud. Lenny on the other hand, just taught Motion and his X and O game was impervious to other teams except Jordan and the Knicks. The Lenny offense vs. the Bud offense is very similar... both works on the ideal that everybody is always moving. Lenny's however was one that required the PG to be the man. Bud's doesn't have a focus. Anybody can run it. Both worked good in the reg season but had their shortcomings in the playoffs. 4

The thread title said anyone who spent time here, not anyone who head coached here. That leaves the door open to former players and assistant coaches. This is a short list if we limit it to former head coaches.

If that's the case then I guess the answer is Ty Lue.

Premium Member Atlantaholic Posted December 29, 2020 Premium Member Report Share Posted December 29, 2020 Terry Stotts did a good job with what we gave him, not sure why we didn't give him a chance.

Terry Stotts and Larry Drew and Fratello (his first time) were transitional coaches. Guys who were placed in position until we could get a coach we really wanted. Larry Drew was very successful. Made us a .600 team with some dysfunctional players. However, as soon as Danny was hired, LD had to go.

TRW
I'm going with Mike Fratello at one, Bud at two, and the great Hubie Brown at three. I won't consider Lenny Wilkens because Stan Kasten and him traded Dominique in our championship season. I couldn't put Larry Drew on the list because he betrayed us and drafted Giannis. Yes, I can be petty at times.
sillent
I'm going to assume this is a secret credit to Lloyd Pierce coaching and how he's got the "juice" now and y'all are reminiscing on who would be next. For all the hate y'all have given a 3rd man head coach with busted rosters I'm sure he appreciates this love. Seriously though I bet he's in the conversation before it's all said and done. I guess we don't know what we got because we ain't ever had nothing like him but I bet his 29 opponents know better.
Premium Member NineOhTheRino Posted January 2, 2021 Premium Member Report Share Posted January 2, 2021 (edited) Lenny was the best. Fratello was my favorite Looking back I have to say Mike Woodson should be given more credit. We overrated the roster while undervaluing the work Woody did to put that team in position to compete. The 2009-2010 roster was his best team in terms of wins 10 Mike Bibby PG 6-1 190 May 13, 1978 us 11 Arizona 34 Jason Collins C 7-0 255 December 2, 1978 us 8 Stanford 11 Jamal Crawford SG 6-5 185 March 20, 1980 us 9 Michigan 1 Maurice Evans SF 6-5 220 November 8, 1978 us 6 Wichita State, Texas 15 Al Horford C 6-9 240 June 3, 1986 do 2 Florida 50 Othello Hunter SF 6-8 225 May 28, 1986 us 1 Ohio State 2 Joe Johnson SG 6-7 240 June 29, 1981 us 8 Arkansas 33 Randolph Morris PF 6-10 266 January 2, 1986 us 3 Kentucky 27 Zaza Pachulia C 6-11 270 February 10, 1984 ge 6 32 Joe Smith PF 6-10 225 July 26, 1975 us 14 Maryland 5 Josh Smith PF 6-9 225 December 5, 1985 us 5 0 Jeff Teague PG 6-3 195 June 10, 1988 us R Wake Forest 6 Mario West SG 6-5 210 June 19, 1984 us 2 Georgia Tech 24 Marvin Williams SF 6-8 237 June 19, 1986 us 4 UNC 53 wins with that roster was damn good. This is te first year that he's had all the parts and pieces to work with. How he, and the team, turn out is still to be determined. Will we make the playoffs? What seed? How will we preform there? Will we be healthy? All these questions yet to be answered....
