Sam Vincent was talking about Draymond Green yesterday evening before the game on Sirius NBA Radio.  He pointed out the fact that Draymond Green has not become a better shooter, despite having all of the other talents to become a truly great player.  He even suggested that he work with a shooting coach and change his shot.

He also made the point that Draymond only had to become a slightly below average 3 point shooter ( around 32% ), and average somewhere around 13 - 14 ppg, in order to have a huge impact on the Warriors.  He achieved this in 2015 - 16, when he averaged 14 ppg on 39% 3FG shooting.  But in the last 5 seasons, he's shot below 31% . . . and below 29% in the last 3 seasons.

This is why I appreciate the advancement of John Collins as a shooter.  In just 3 years, he ( with the help of LP and his staff ) transformed himself into a big who could confidently knock down the 3 point shot.  In year 4, he's taking 3s in crunch time and knocking them down.  The next level of his offensive game will be to develop his offense off the dribble, which he has the skills to do.

Shooting is a gift, it really is. You can get better, but some people never get much better.

I think we all expected the defense to be better under Nate, the surprise for me has been on the offense side.

After ranking 28th in off-ball screens before the coaching change, the team’s back half of the season ranked 11th, according to Second Spectrum. Since March, the team has raised its shooting percentages in virtually every traditional and advanced statistical category.

McMillan’s adjustments have helped the Hawks to create more open looks at the rim. Before March, 41.2 percent of the team’s shots were tightly contested and only 26.9 percent were considered “open,” according to tracking data from NBA Advanced Stats. Since then, the Hawks have lowered their share of contested shots to 40 percent while increasing their share of open shots to 30.1 percent.The evolution of star guard Trae Young’s role within the offense has been pivotal in improving the team’s play on that side of the ball. Under McMillan, Young has seen a slight increase in his usage rate, but he has still managed to become much more efficient as both a scorer and a facilitator. 

“For us to take the next step, Trae has to take that next step,” McMillan said during a postgame interview last month. “He has some players on this team that they’ve added. … These are guys that can play, they can help him and he has to trust those guys.”

Trust in his supporting cast has contributed to Young’s efficiency as a floor general. Since March, the third-year guard has cut down on turnovers while improving his assist percentage and assist ratio — which means many more of Young’s possessions as a playmaker have resulted in points for the Hawks. 

Young’s growing belief in teammates has also allowed him to be more selective with his shots. Under McMillan, Young’s scoring average and field goal attempts have slightly dipped, but his field goal percentage and true shooting percentage have improved. Since McMillan took over, the Hawks raised their offensive rating with Young on the court from 115.4 to 121.3 and their net rating with him from +2.5 to +8.2. 

 

The 4th Quarters have been impressive..

Since then, the Hawks have turned themselves into one of the best teams in the league when entering the fourth quarter with a lead. The team won 20 of 22 games when entering the fourth with the lead and even pulled off seven comeback wins during the same stretch. In order to do so the team had to, once again, become more efficient — raising its field goal percentage to 47.3 and three-point percentage to a league-leading 41.2 percent. Atlanta also posted the second-highest fourth-quarter net rating in the NBA, at +11.8.

I'm no Jimi Butler fan ... like, at all but I'm also decidedly not a fan of Woj or Shams so this comment made my heart go all a twitter ....

Regarding Shams' "report" that Jimi had "tense" moments with Heat mgt ...

Keep in mind, there have been numerous reports of Jimi going at it with every team he's been on, but this is the first time his agent came out to dispute the report.

Methinkin' Shams got gott this time.

It's early, but Brooklyn does not look like an unbeatable super team right now. Maybe they still run Boston out of the arena at some point, but right now the Celtics are giving them all they can handle.

Watched the Bucks / Heat earlier and this one so far. Lotta missed shots in both. Playoff jitters I guess. Really hope Hawks don't suffer suffer same tomorrow. But it's kinda what I'm expecting.

Im glad we have the benefit of watching all of the other games before we play, just to get our minds wrapped around what is about to happen and learn from other peoples mistakes.

I hope we are paying attention

I definitely believe in the 'hurt dog' axiom.  Only difference here is this isn't the first Jimi rumor to come out.  It's not even the worse one.  The response here, imho, suggests it's questionable "news".

For better or worse, Butler's persona is one who relishes the negative rumors before.  Why fight back against this one?

I'm not a fan of Woj or Shams because I think they're smarmy.  Make a name off telling us stuff we're gonna learn in a day or so.

Not saying I'm cheering for the Celtics. That would be practically sacrilegious. And I'm sure some men in black would show up to apprehend my treasured red and volt ATL hat and Hawks superfan ID card. So, that's why I'm not saying that.
