Also with the addition of Murray, both Hunter and Murray can guard two of the best scoring options.

I waited to long to add this to my original post.

Right, especially now Hunter wont HAVE to guard option A every single night, every single minute he is on the court. We can go with either on option A and the other on B as we see fit.

It may still shake out that he gets the toughest assignment, but it isn’t a guarantee anymore. That will give him more energy to contribute offensively. Especially not having to chase PG’s anymore as that will likely always be Murray now.

They should NOT extend. The main reasons we drafted Hunter is his fit with Trae, his defense, and his college championship experience. We drafted him to win a championship. If he shows he can do that for us next year, I say give him the bag. Otherwise, if we get more of the same, it is better to let him walk in a couple of years. He has to become more of a difference maker in the win/loss column. Defense wins championships and he has to own that role and help lead us there. He can no longer just be a guy trying to fit in.

First he has to stay healthy.

This is his time to prove that he can stay Healthy and produce.

What does this mean for Hunter?  Incentive laden - All NBA and Aalstar and All defensive selections required to get to $120 million - $107 million over 4years base.

That's probably what Hunter is aiming for but we'd be foolish to offer that as an extension.  If we end up there after this season fine.   I'm just not seeing anyway Hunter signs an extension unless he has personal injury concerns.   There's no good reason for him to do it.

I'm ok letting him get to RFAcy, ala Collins and have his prove it year.

Sign him if you can reach a deal that has the risk baked in.  If he wants a deal assuming he is healthy and breaks out then let him have his breakout season and go to RFA.  Hunter is the biggest "swing" player for us on the roster.  A regular season like last year and the season will be a failure.  A healthy year that resembles his playoff run would be a huge success.

This offseason is critical and I'm loving every clip showing him putting in the work.  I've said multiple times that the table is set for him to break out.  He is healthy.  DM can take a lot of the most challenging defensive assignments.  He will not be getting much defensive attention on offense and looks to be adding some important tools to the kit.  This could be the year we've all been waiting for!

But Barrett's new contract also impacts De'Andre Hunter's ongoing negotiations with the Atlanta Hawks. In July, we learned the two sides were roughly $20 million apart and have not received any updates since that time.......

But Hunter's contract extension can't come anywhere close to Barrett's new deal. Barrett has played 65 more games than Hunter over three seasons and has been almost twice as productive.

If the Barrett bar is too high for Hunter, what's the next comparable contract? Not Keldon Johnson. The undersized small forward signed a four-year, $74 million extension with the San Antonio Spurs last month.

Johnson has played 161 games over three seasons, not that far off from Hunter's 139 games. Yet again, Johnson's production swamps Hunter's output by almost every metric....

Balancing Hunter's injury risk with future potential is no easy task. But given the frugal nature of Atlanta's front office, it would be surprising if they exceeded a four-year, $60 million offer to Hunter.

Huerter was 4/65 right?   I get that Hunter is a better player all around but statistically they aren't that different and durability wise there is a huge difference.   I can't see offering an extension for more than 4/80 but also if i'm Hunter i wouldn't take it.  Try again next year.

Yeah, especially considering JC's initial offer was like 4yrs 90mil and he was a more productive player up to that point. Dre being offered more than Kev, less than JC is a fair starting point, and if he goes and balls out to earn more, great. But consistency is key. He would have a have a REALLY good year to end up north of 4years 100 mil.

I for one would love to see defensive training. I am not sure it even exists.  There has been no evolution on the defensive side of the ball in years.

Do you mean no evolution among Hawks players?

JC is one to me who evolved quite nicely with incremental improvements on the defensive side of the ball in addition to his offense.  I don't think we've seen any big transformation among our guards and wings but some improvements around the edges none-the-less.  I'm going to be very interested to see how our player's react to having DM on the roster and if his effort and aggression on D lifts the overall focus and effort of the team.
