It does seem to make sense from both sides.....i'm leaning to doing that deal if it's on the table truly.

If there's a time to trade for Simmons it's now. His value is at an all time low and he likely comes with picks attached. 

Don't give him an opportunity to revitalize his career now that the ball will be back in his hands, with KD and Kyrie gone. He's now surrounded by defenders and shooters (DFS, Bridges, Cam, etc.). He could really turn his stock around significantly the rest of this season and then there's no longer an opportunity to get him with assets attached... going forward you'd likely have to shell out more capital. 

And 5 2nd's for an expiring Crowder is ridiculous.
