Exactly — Enjoy rookie contracts and invest in developing them (which we have with Snyder).

You will only have them on rookie contracts for so long: OO and Bey are due early extensions this offseason, JJ the next year, then AJ.

And, honestly, it puts some perspective on other guys folks among us call "overpaid".  Mainly talking Collins/Hunter.

You saying the Hawks organization is smarter than the Celtics?

I hope this is the case over the next 5 years or so.  It has not been the case at all historically -- I think every champion for the past 10 years has had 2 or more max players

Correct — Develop them and then possibly sell high on those that you aren’t willing to overpay.

What do you mean by sell high? Are you looking for more pics/Rookies or getting a better player? It makes a difference.

It depends — Some teams fancy certain players… cash in one way or another.  Picks, young players, vet fits for need… it depends.  Having older, expensive players does not guarantee anything.   Picks can be retraded before you say “we aren’t looking to get younger” or something.

Nope. There will always be the next guy making more as the cap rises a max 10% each year.

A Tatum Supermax will be 35% of $164.5 million next offseason for $57.5 in year 1.

Donovan Mitchell will be due his extension the following year with the cap at $180 mil.

Trae's extension year the cap will be close to $200 mil...if he makes AllNBA he starts at $69 mil

Correct but when you factor in that it will only be a 3 year deal instead of a 5 year deal then Mitchel will max out at about 200 million over three years vs 300 million in guaranteed money over 5 years that JB will get.  The upside for Mitchell is if he is still playing at an all pro level after his three years, he could get another big contract. But if he gets hurt or starts to stink it up, he may not see that type of money ever again.  I like the new CBA in that respect.

Boston had no choice. Either give him a max or trade him. For the most part teams don't trade their stats in their prime, they just don't. Not unless the player is insisting on leaving. I suspect Boston took no pleasure in giving him this deal. This is the issue for teams. The best player in the league gets the same contact as the 20th best player. It sucks, but it is what it is.

There is a degree of sticker shock but as others have said this is just a factor of a % of the total cap.  If revenues keep rising, the salaries for players keep rising because the profits for owners keep rising.  They share the revenue gains.  Paying Brown a supermax is no more problematic today than it was 4 years ago.  It is just a % of the cap.

I don't see how it's not ultra problematic with the new CBA.  In the 25-26 season, Boston will have 2 players making 70% of the cap. Add in KP who is making nearly 20% of the CAP and that's 90% of the CAP on 3 players.  Even considering the increase in CAP annually, we are talking about nearly 155K on 3 players when the cap is expected to be $198M.  How is that not more problematic given the restrictions imposed by the new cba?

Guys, come on, get with the program. The sports leagues do not keep up with every other aspect of our economy. The players and owners get more money when the leagues have larger profits. The percentages all generally stay the same. This isn't going to cripple Boston. Let's not overreact.

If the 2nd apron where all the restrictions come in is set at 34% above CAP then in 25-26 is could be set at around $268M.  If the Celtics have Tatum ($70M supermax), Brown ($56M supermax), and KP ($30M on current contract), that's $156M for 3 players.  That leaves them $112M to fill out their roster with 12 players or about $9M per player on average.  Something has gotta give.  It may not be crippling, but they won't be able to keep White, Brogdon, Al, Rob Williams, Pritchard, etc... at all of their MVs.
