Schlenk is definitely interested in seeing what he has with Labissiere before cutting bait, and perhaps the shooting can be weaponized — Labissiere has displayed a nice midrange touch since he was in high school. I don’t think it’s a great idea to keep four centers, and he won’t be back if the Hawks draft a big. But otherwise, I could easily see Labissiere returning on a partially guaranteed deal and then the Hawks deciding by midseason whether he or Fernando is the keeper.

As for Teague … meh. I mean, when the alternative is Evan Turner, you’re going to look all right in comparison, but at this point in his career, I don’t think Teague is a plus backup. Is he even better than Brandon Goodwin? Teague for me is a minimum guy — the type you’re really happy to have around as a third point guard in case something happens but not somebody you should be counting on as a key piece.

The Hawks should have plenty of money available for an upgrade here, even if they spend most of their cap space on a 3-and-D wing and some of the leftovers on a backup stretch four. (I project Atlanta to have $40 million in room if the league, as many suspect, holds the cap number at $109 million.)

Speculates Bembry, Jones, Graham won't be back.

If the Hawks are going the traditional veteran backup point guard route, three options stand out who should each cost below $10 million — Goran Dragic of Miami, Reggie Jackson of the Los Angeles Clippers and D.J. Augustin of Orlando.

Atlanta can go all-in on offense - Utah’s Jordan Clarkson....... I’m guessing he’ll cost $12 million to $14 million per year on a multi-year commitment......upgrading the defense, another potential option is Chicago’s Kris Dunn. Offensively, he’s not very gifted, and the Hawks will struggle to score when he’s running the show. Defensively? Holy moly. He might be the best defensive guard in the whole league....... I think he’d cost north of $10 million per year.

Outside-the-box option — Toronto’s Fred VanVleet. He is the best free-agent point guard by a mile....This would be expensive. VanVleet will have multiple suitors, likely including Detroit, New York and his own Toronto Raptors, and his price tag is going to be in the $20 million-per-year range for three or four years.

Another player I didn’t mention is in a similar vein: Sacramento’s Bogdan Bogdanovic. He’s more plausible as a starter next to Young but likely would need a large payday to dissuade the Kings from matching an offer sheet

Tim Hardaway Jr. might be the best plausible option if he opts out of his final year in Dallas. He’s a good shooter who has proven adept at playing off of a great passer with the Mavs, and his defense has improved quite a bit since his last tour.

Harris would be a good secondary option, especially if the Hawks went the route of overpaying on a one-year deal with a team option. The Hawks may not find great use for all of their cap money in this market, so maintaining flexibility for 2021 while still nabbing a good player isn’t the worst option. Supposing they paid him absurdly gross money (say, $18 million to $20 million) for the short-term deal, does it really hurt them? And it prevents them from making a more destructive move on a long-term deal. Harris adds another suspect defender but puts a knockdown shooter next to Young as well as a graduate of the nation’s finest university to pair with Hunter.

I mentioned Jordan Clarkson in realgm and some guy “shakes” who apparently knows me 🤔 yelled at me.

The yelling is probably justified but not because of Jordan Clarkson.  I mean we would have been significantly better with a guy like Clarkson vs Turner/Crabbe/Parson/Graham/Bembry.

I'm down with Knox.   I think he can be a good player and it just seems like the Knicks were too in disarray when they took him to develop him.

Can he play stretch 4?

The only point guard in that list we should target and get is Kris Dunn.  Clarkson would be last on my list ... he will not help at all as he can't run an offense one bit.

Marvin in his old age has actually turned into a nice backup power forward who can play d and hit the three.  Its actually not that bad of an idea to have him to give JC a breather.

I agree Kris Dunn is the guy we should go after if we don't bring back Teague on a discount deal. We don't just need a backup to Young -- it would be a luxury to have a defensive specialist for specific instances (e.g. end of quarter out of bounds plays where we just need a stop).

Now I don't know how Trae would feel about that considering our epic battle with them last season.

reading this article definitely assured some things for me while also making me a fan of Hollinger (Somewhat). Quickly on Hollinger...Kirschner mentioned that of all national sports media folks out there, Hollinger actually attends the hawks games the most and is most familiar with the the team! That’s news to me as I know most National media folks out there don’t truly watch or follow our hawks whatsoever even when they make good or bad comments. Now that I know this I will take Hollingers comments regarding the hawks more seriously since he pays attention to the team and all.

as far as the article goes I read two things that I’ve been saying from the very beginning that was discussed. One that loaded 2021 free agency is not the hawks friend. While I agree Schlenk should make sure he has some max cap space just In case ...it’s likely none of those top targets are coming here on their own free will. That’s not particularly anything new for some of us but for those of us living the pipe dream ...face reality.

2nd thing is, it’s very important that Schlenk assembles a playoff caliber team this off season. But It appears it may be harder than at least I expected so I will not be shocked to hear the hawks involved in a ransom of trade rumors. Some of the key guys I thought the hawks may target I’m realizing may not happen.

schlenk is in a tougher spot than most realize but this is where his skills as a gm will really showcase outside the draft.
